Chapter 9: The Betrayal Within

The heavy oak doors of the study swung open without a knock, interrupting the tense silence in the room.

Commander Vance stepped inside, accompanied by a disheveled, sweating man in an expensive Brioni suit. It was Julian Vance, the chief legal counsel for Santillán Holdings and Arthur’s primary fixer for over thirty years.

"Arthur! Thank God you're—" Julian started, before freezing in his tracks as he noticed the tactical operators and realized the room had completely changed hands. His eyes darted nervously to Camila sitting behind the desk.

"Julian," Arthur said bitterly, not looking up. "You’re late. Or did the federal marshals catch you before you could shred the secondary ledgers?"

Julian swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. He didn't look at Arthur. Instead, he looked directly at Camila, his expression shifting into one of desperate, self-serving survival.

"Ms. Camila," Julian began, his voice dripping with oily subservience. "Or should I say, Director Vance. I want to formally state for the record that I was acting entirely under duress. Arthur Santillán threatened my family, my career, and my life if I didn't help him manage the offshore paper trails. I have complete, unredacted copies of every shell corporation file locked in my private vault. If you grant me immunity, I can hand over the keys right now."

Rodrigo snapped his head up, staring at the family lawyer in absolute disbelief. "Julian! You treacherous bastard! You were my father’s right hand! You helped draft every single contract!"

"Quiet, boy," Julian sneered, dropping all pretense of loyalty to the Santillán family now that the ship was sinking. "I have a family to protect. I’m not going down for crimes I only facilitated under direct orders."

Camila watched the exchange with a cold, detached amusement. She leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers together.

"Loyalty among thieves," Camila remarked softly. "How predictable. Julian, bring me the files from your private vault within thirty minutes, and I’ll recommend a reduced sentence of five years instead of twenty. Refuse, and you share a cell block with Arthur."

Julian didn't hesitate for a single second. "I'll have them here in twenty minutes, Director. Consider it done." He turned on his heel and hurried out of the room, eager to betray the only man who had enriched him for decades.

Arthur watched his lawyer scurry away, letting out a dry, rattling laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

"That is my world, Camila," Arthur whispered, shaking his head slowly. "Built on shifting sand, held together by greed, and abandoned the moment the tide goes out."
