Chapter 14: The Dangerous Offer

The silence in the foyer grew so heavy that even the hum of the distant security monitors seemed to fade away.
Commander Vance stepped closer, his boots clicking sharply against the marble floor, positioning himself just behind Camila’s right shoulder.
Viktor didn't even glance at Vance. His attention remained entirely fixed on Camila, a faint, confident smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.

"A partnership?" Camila repeated, her voice dripping with skepticism. "You run an international criminal syndicate responsible for arms trafficking, political destabilization, and corporate murder. And you think I’m going to sit at your table?"
"You're an ambitious woman, Camila," Viktor said smoothly, taking a slow step toward her. "You spent ten years methodically building a career inside the International Financial Crimes Tribunal, climbing the ranks just to engineer the precise, surgical destruction of the Santillán family. That wasn't just about seeking justice for your parents. That was about proving your competence on a global stage."
Camila’s expression remained an unreadable wall of stone, but her silence spoke volumes.
"The tribunal is a cage of bureaucracy, red tape, and politicians who will tie your hands the moment you step on the wrong toes," Viktor continued, his voice dropping into a persuasive, hypnotic rhythm. "They use you when it’s convenient, and they’ll discard you the moment your investigations threaten national security interests. With me? You wouldn't be bound by anyone’s rules. You could dictate the flow of capital, restructure entire corporate landscapes, and punish the corrupt on a scale Arthur Santillán never even dreamed of."
"And in exchange?" Camila asked quietly. "What is the price of admission to your little club, Viktor?"
"Absolute discretion," Viktor replied instantly. "And the immediate cessation of the tribunal's active warrants against Nox Maritime subsidiaries in the South China Sea. We sign a mutual non-interference treaty, pool our intelligence assets, and share control of the recovered Santillán liquid reserves."
Rodrigo, who was still being held in a temporary holding room down the hall under federal guard, couldn't hear the conversation, but the stakes hanging in the foyer were high enough to suffocate the air in the room.
Commander Vance’s hand twitched near his holster. "Director, don't listen to him. This is a recruitment pitch from a ghost."
Camila held up her hand, signaling Vance to remain silent. She locked her eyes onto Viktor’s ice-blue stare, stepping closer until only a few inches separated them.
"You make a compelling pitch, Viktor," Camila whispered, a dangerous glint flashing in her dark eyes. "You studied my career, my dossier, my motives. But you made one critical mistake."
Viktor’s eyebrows arched slightly. "And what mistake was that?"
"You assumed my goal was to take over the throne," Camila replied coldly. "You thought I spent ten years becoming an apex predator just so I could join your pack."
Before Viktor could process her words, Camila raised her wrist and tapped the custom encrypted terminal on her watch twice.
