Chapter 17: Pursuit in the Catacombs

The subterranean motor pool beneath the Santillán estate was a labyrinth of concrete pillars, reinforced steel doors, and dimly lit service tunnels designed to move illicit cargo without ever touching the surface streets.
The air was thick with the smell of unburned diesel and damp concrete.
Camila moved swiftly down the center of the main access corridor, her right hand resting firmly on the grip of her compact sidearm, her eyes scanning every shadow. Behind her, the heavy boots of Vance and his tactical team echoed rhythmically against the floor.

"Director, heat signature detected near sector four!" Vance warned through the comms channel. "Moving fast toward the drainage outfall leading to the river!"
Camila didn't hesitate. She veered sharply to the left, cutting through an auxiliary storage bay filled with old crates of Santillán corporate archives.
Up ahead, near the massive iron-grated drainage outfall that opened out toward the riverbank, a lone figure sprinted with ruthless efficiency. Viktor had discarded his dress shirt, revealing a dark, form-fitting tactical undershirt, and was in the middle of overriding the electronic locking mechanism of the heavy service gate.
"End of the line, Viktor," Camila called out, stepping out from behind a concrete pillar, her pistol raised and locked squarely on his center mass.
Viktor stopped working on the keypad. He slowly turned around, wiping a streak of dust off his cheek. He wasn't breathing hard; in fact, he looked remarkably calm, as if this were all part of a calculated script.
"You're remarkably persistent, Camila," Viktor said, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips. "I’ll give you that. Most people would have taken the Santillán billions and retired to a private island. But you... you actually want blood."
"I want justice," Camila corrected coldly, taking another step forward. "And you’re out of moves. The outfall is welded shut on the river side, and the perimeter above us is locked down by federal units."
Viktor let out a low, soft laugh. "Locked down by your units, yes. But did you ever stop to wonder why the backup generators failed the exact second I mentioned my name?"
May you like
Camila’s eyes narrowed slightly. "A localized EMP device."
"Closer," Viktor smiled, pulling a small, glowing data drive from his pocket and holding it up between two fingers. "An inside job. The tribunal isn't as clean as you think, Camila. There are people at the very top of your organization who find my business model... mutually beneficial."
