Chapter 11: The Inheritance of Ashes

The morning sun broke over the shattered iron gates of the Santillán estate, casting long, fractured shadows across the white gravel driveway where federal recovery trucks were still parked. Inside the mansion, the air smelled of stale coffee, ozone from overworked server racks, and the unmistakable scent of a dynasty reduced to ash.

Camila sat at the head of the long conference table in the main boardroom. The walls, once adorned with oil portraits of stern, wealthy ancestors who had built their fortunes on the backs of exploited workers, were now bare.

The paintings had been cataloged and seized as collateral under federal asset forfeiture laws.

Commander Vance placed a fresh cup of black coffee and a thick leather-bound dossier in front of her.

"The morning briefs are in, Director," Vance said, his tone strictly professional. "Stock markets opened twenty minutes ago. Santillán Holdings has been officially delisted. Liquidators are beginning the process of breaking up the subsidiaries and selling off the real estate portfolio."

Camila opened the dossier, scanning the crisp columns of figures. "And the subsidiary ports in the South China Sea?"

"That’s the complication," Vance replied, pulling up a digital map on the wall-mounted tactical display behind her. "While we secured the domestic operations, Arthur’s overseas network—specifically the shadow shipping lanes through the Malacca Strait—wasn't managed directly by Santillán Holdings. It was controlled through a network of offshore shell companies registered under a completely different corporate umbrella."

Camila narrowed her eyes, tracing the glowing red shipping routes on the map. "An umbrella that wasn't included in the emergency freeze mandate."

"Correct," Vance nodded grimly. "Someone anticipated this scenario. Within minutes of Arthur’s arrest yesterday, the primary offshore holding entity—a phantom corporation known as Nox Maritime—transferred full operational control of those shipping lanes to an anonymous board of directors."

Camila closed the dossier with a sharp click. "Who's behind Nox Maritime?"

"That’s what we’ve been trying to figure out," Vance said, tapping a key on his tablet to bring up a blank profile screen with a high-security classification warning. "Every digital trail leads to a dead end behind military-grade encryption relays located somewhere in Eastern Europe. But there’s more. According to our decrypted intelligence archives from Arthur’s personal safe, Nox Maritime wasn't just a partner in the arms-smuggling ring. They were the ones pulling the strings."

Camila stood up slowly, walking over to the large glass window that overlooked the ruined courtyard. "Arthur didn't build that empire alone. He was just the front man."

"Precisely," Vance agreed. "And now that the front man has fallen, the real owner is stepping out of the shadows."
