Chapter 12: The Visitor at the Gate

By noon, the media circus outside the estate had grown even larger.

Satellite trucks lined the public road for a mile in both directions, and reporters pressed their cameras against the chain-link temporary fencing erected by federal marshals.
Inside the compound, however, an unnatural quiet had settled in. The forensic accountants had finished their primary sweep, leaving behind only Camila’s core tactical team and a few select tribunal investigators.
Suddenly, the internal security console on the wall chimed with a priority alert.
"Director," a tactical operator stationed at the front gate intercom called out, his voice tinged with unease. "We have an unauthorized vehicle at the secondary service gate. They aren't media, and they aren't federal marshals."
Camila turned away from the window. "Show me the feed."
The monitor flickered, displaying the security camera feed from the reinforced service gate half a mile down the drive. A single, matte-black European luxury sedan idled quietly against the concrete barriers. The driver’s door opened, and a tall man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit stepped out. He wore dark sunglasses, and his silver-streaked hair was neatly combed back. He didn't carry weapons, nor did he display any sign of haste. He simply stood in front of the camera lens, looking directly into it with a faint, chilling smile.
"Identify," Vance barked into the intercom mic.
The man on the screen didn't speak into the call box. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted satellite communicator, and held it up to the camera lens.
On Camila’s desk console, a secure terminal instantly beeped. A text message popped up on her private screen:
“Director Camila Vance. Impressive work dismantling the Santillán puppet show. But you’ve only cleared out the garage while the master is still in the house. Open the gate. Let’s discuss how much of this empire you actually think you own.”
Camila stared at the screen, her face freezing into a mask of pure concentration. She didn't hesitate.
"Open the gate, Vance," she commanded softly.

"Director, that could be a trap," Vance warned, his hand dropping instinctively to his sidearm.
"If they wanted to blow us up, they would have used a missile instead of a sedan," Camila replied, her voice steady and resolute. "Let the master of the house in. I want to look him in the eye."
