Chapter 9 - THE ADDRESS IN BROOKLYN

At eleven twenty-eight that night, Alessandro Moretti stood across from an abandoned church in Red Hook and wondered how much of his life had been constructed by men who specialized in making the living look dead.

The building had no sign.

Half the windows were boarded.

A rusted cross leaned above the roofline.

Rosa sat in the back seat of the armored SUV beside Lily.

Alessandro had argued for twenty minutes that the child should remain at the mansion.

Rosa refused to leave her again.

After what had happened in the library, Alessandro could not tell her she was wrong.

Marco checked the surrounding blocks.

No obvious surveillance.

No unusual vehicles.

That made him more nervous.

"Could be Gabriel."

"Could be Luca."

Alessandro looked toward the church.

"Either way, somebody wants us inside."

Rosa touched the music box in her lap.

They had opened it earlier.

The visible compartment held only the old mechanical cylinder.

A hidden panel beneath the lining contained a second flash drive.

It was encrypted more heavily than the first.

Marco's people had not cracked it yet.

The only unprotected file contained a single photograph.

Miguel Delgado sitting beside Gabriel Russo at a diner.

The timestamp was six months after Miguel's funeral.

Rosa had stared at the image for nearly an hour.

Six months after she buried him, Miguel was alive.

Whether he was alive now remained unknown.

Alessandro entered the church first.

Marco followed.

Rosa came behind them carrying Lily.

The nave smelled of damp wood and dust.

Candles burned near the altar.

Someone had lit twelve of them.

A man sat in the first pew with his back to them.

He wore a black coat.

A pale scar crossed the side of his throat.

Gabriel Russo.

Before they opened the encrypted drive, Gabriel showed Rosa the only photograph he had taken during the months Miguel lived under protection.

Miguel sat at a cheap motel desk surrounded by printed spreadsheets and fast-food wrappers.

His hair was longer.

His face looked exhausted.

Beside the laptop stood a framed photograph of Rosa and Lily.

Rosa recognized it immediately.

It had disappeared from their apartment the week after the funeral.

"You took this."

Gabriel shook his head.

"Miguel asked someone to retrieve it."

"Someone entered my apartment after I buried him?"

"Yes."

Rosa laughed in disbelief.

"Did anyone involved in this story ever consider asking me before entering my home?"

Gabriel had no useful answer.

She looked at the photograph again.

Miguel's hand rested beside Lily's picture as if proximity on a desk could substitute for being present in her life.

"Was he sick?"

"No."

"Hurt?"

"Often."

Rosa looked up sharply.

Gabriel continued.

"He tried leaving protection twice."

"The first time Luca's people found the car."

"The second time they found a safe apartment and killed the man guarding it."

Rosa closed her eyes.

The anger remained.

But now it had to share space with the knowledge that Miguel's fear had not been imaginary.

"Why didn't he send money?"

"He did."

Rosa frowned.

"I never received it."

"Exactly."

Gabriel explained that three transfers Miguel arranged were intercepted through accounts controlled by a Moretti-linked payroll processor.

After that, Miguel stopped using financial channels that might expose Rosa's location or confirm he was alive.

Alessandro listened with growing disgust.

Luca's network had not only controlled money at the top.

It had reached down into the ordinary mechanisms people trusted without thinking.

Payroll.

Insurance.

Medical records.

Storage access.

A conspiracy became durable when it stopped looking like conspiracy and started looking like paperwork.

Rosa handed the photograph back.

"When I see him, do not stand between us."

Gabriel nodded.

"I have no intention of doing that."

Gabriel had watched Rosa from a distance for eighteen months.

He admitted it only after she asked why he knew Lily's nickname.

"How many times?"

Rosa stood in the ruined church with her arms crossed.

Gabriel hesitated.

"Enough."

"That is not a number."

"Seven."

Her face hardened.

"Seven times you saw us and never told me Miguel was alive."

"Four of those times Luca had surveillance near you."

"And the other three?"

Gabriel looked toward the candles.

"I did not trust myself to approach you without exposing him."

Rosa laughed bitterly.

"Another man protecting me by letting me grieve."

Gabriel did not defend himself.

"Yes."

That answer made Alessandro glance at him.

Gabriel continued.

"Miguel wanted to come home every day."

"Do not make him sound noble."

Rosa's voice shook.

"He had choices too."

"He did."

"And he chose hiding."

"After a courier carrying his first message to you was found dead."

Rosa went silent.

Gabriel's face tightened.

"The courier was twenty-six."

"He had a wife."

"Miguel learned the news from me and refused to risk another person."

"So I built indirect channels."

"Storage."

"The locker."

"The music box."

"None worked quickly enough."

Rosa looked at Lily.

"The only thing that worked was my daughter walking into a room she was told not to enter."

Gabriel almost smiled.

"History has worse strategies."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Tell me what Miguel did while he was hidden."

Gabriel leaned against a pew.

"He mapped Luca's network."

"At first he wanted only proof of the construction shipments."

"Then he discovered fake employee deaths, copied identities, and money moving through Duca clinics."

"He realized his own disappearance was one line in a larger system."

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"How many fake deaths?"

"At least nine."

Rosa stared.

"Nine families buried empty coffins?"

"Not all were empty."

Gabriel's answer turned the church colder.

"Some people really died."

"The system made it difficult to know which."

Alessandro thought of power operating not through violence alone but through uncertainty.

If families could not even trust death certificates, every official fact became negotiable.

That was larger than Luca's ambition.

It was infrastructure built for anyone ruthless enough to use it.

"Why keep Miguel alive instead of releasing the evidence?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Because he refused to release a partial archive."

"He said if he exposed five names while fifty remained hidden, the other forty-five would simply learn to be more careful."

Rosa closed her eyes.

"That sounds exactly like him."

For the first time, anger and affection occupied her voice at the same time.

"Stubborn enough to disappear for a complete spreadsheet."

Gabriel nodded.

"He said you would understand."

"I understand that I am going to kill him when I see him."

Lily watched Rosa's mouth and then signed.

Papa?

Rosa looked at her daughter and softened.

First hug.

Then angry.

Lily nodded solemnly as if this was a reasonable reunion plan.

He did not turn around.

"You brought the child."

Alessandro stopped ten feet behind him.

"You knew she would come."

Gabriel looked over his shoulder.

Time had changed him.

His hair was almost white.

The right side of his face carried burn scars from the Newark explosion.

"Children are difficult to plan around."

His eyes settled on Lily.

"That one especially."

Rosa stepped forward.

"Where is Miguel?"

Gabriel stood.

His gaze softened when he looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

Rosa flinched.

"Do not say that unless he's dead."

Gabriel was silent.

Rosa took another step.

"Is my husband alive?"

"He was alive forty-eight hours ago."

Rosa's knees weakened.

Alessandro caught her elbow.

Lily watched their faces.

Rosa signed to her daughter with shaking hands.

Papa alive.

Lily stared.

Then she smiled.

It was the first uncomplicated smile Alessandro had seen on her since the party.

The sight made Gabriel look away.

Rosa noticed.

"Where is he?"

"Moved."

"By whom?"

"Luca's people."

Rosa's smile disappeared.

"You had him and lost him?"

Gabriel absorbed the accusation.

"I kept him alive for eighteen months."

"Away from his wife and daughter."

"Because the first time he tried to contact you, Luca intercepted the message and killed the courier."

Rosa shook her head.

"You could have found another way."

"I did."

Gabriel pointed toward the music box.

"Miguel created the locker and the backup."

"He planned to surface when Luca's network was exposed."

"Then Luca learned someone was protecting him."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

Gabriel laughed without amusement.

"Because I did not know whether you were compromised."

"By Luca?"

"By your uncle."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Salvatore told me you managed my father's contingency network."

"Salvatore told you part of the truth."

Gabriel walked toward the altar.

"Your father created the network because he feared Salvatore."

The words landed harder than Alessandro expected.

"Why?"

"Because your uncle wanted the family legitimate."

"That sounds admirable."

"He wanted legitimacy by selling control to people who could destroy the Moretti organization from inside."

Gabriel faced him.

"Your father refused."

"Then he died."

Alessandro's stare sharpened.

"Cancer killed my father."

"Cancer weakened him."

Gabriel's voice dropped.

"Someone accelerated the ending by changing his medication."

Rosa covered Lily's eyes instinctively, though the child could not hear the words.

Alessandro felt the church tilt around him.

"Who?"

"I never proved it."

"You are telling me my father was murdered without proof."

"I am telling you why he ordered me to disappear."

Gabriel removed a sealed envelope from inside his coat.

"This is in your father's handwriting."

Alessandro recognized it immediately.

The letter had been written twelve years earlier.

If Alessandro is reading this, then one of two things has happened.

Either I was wrong about my brother, or I was right too late.

Alessandro read the rest in silence.

His father warned him never to let one adviser control money, security, and family access at the same time.

Alessandro had done exactly that with Luca.

He warned that Salvatore believed peace with the Duca family justified compromises that would eventually become surrender.

At the bottom, one line had been underlined twice.

TRUST THE PERSON WHO LOSES THE MOST BY TELLING YOU THE TRUTH.

Alessandro looked at Rosa.

She had lost her husband, income, safety, home, belongings, and nearly her daughter because Lily told the truth.

Then he looked at Gabriel.

"Where did Luca move Miguel?"

Gabriel pointed toward the second flash drive.

"Miguel knows."

"The drive is encrypted."

"Password is not a word."

Rosa looked at him.

"What is it?"

Gabriel knelt in front of Lily.

He signed carefully.

What does Papa call you?

Lily blinked.

Rosa translated the question more clearly.

Lily's face brightened.

Little Star.

Gabriel looked at Rosa.

"Date she was born, followed by the number of letters in that nickname."

Rosa gave Alessandro the date.

Marco entered the password on his laptop.

The drive unlocked.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Recorded conversations.

Shipping records.

One folder was labeled IF THEY MOVE ME.

Inside was a list of six locations.

Five had been crossed out.

The sixth was a private rehabilitation clinic in Westchester County owned through a Duca family trust.

Rosa stared at the address.

"He's there."

Gabriel nodded.

"He was."

Alessandro looked at him.

"Forty-eight hours ago."

"Yes."

"Why would Luca keep Miguel alive?"

Gabriel's answer came immediately.

"Because Miguel copied something Luca cannot find."

"What?"

Gabriel looked toward the music box.

"The ledger proving every person Luca bought with Moretti money."

Marco scrolled through the drive.

"It's not here."

"Exactly."

Rosa's phone vibrated.

A video message had arrived from an unknown number.

She opened it.

Miguel appeared on screen.

Alive.

Bruised.

Older.

But unmistakably alive.

Rosa stopped breathing.

Lily saw him and reached for the phone.

Miguel looked directly into the camera.

"Rosa, if you're seeing this, they found the church."

A shadow moved behind him.

Miguel continued quickly.

"Do not come to the clinic."

"It's a trap."

"Luca wants Alessandro there because the Duca family has already called federal agents."

Alessandro and Marco exchanged a look.

Miguel leaned closer.

"The ledger is not in the music box."

"It's where Lily took her first steps."

The video ended.

Rosa stared at the black screen.

"Our old apartment."

Alessandro frowned.

"The one you moved out of?"

"Yes."

"Someone else lives there now?"

"I don't know."

Gabriel's face changed.

"Then Luca may already be there."

A gunshot exploded from the rear of the church.

One of the candles shattered.

Gabriel pushed Lily and Rosa behind a pew.

More shots followed.

Marco returned fire.

Alessandro turned toward the side aisle.

Men in tactical clothing entered through both doors.

One shouted a command.

"Federal agents."

Gabriel looked at Alessandro.

"I told you Salvatore wasn't the only one playing both sides."

Then he lifted his hands.

The agents surrounded them.

The lead agent walked directly to Alessandro.

"Alessandro Moretti, you're under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, kidnapping, and the attempted murder of Rosa Delgado."

Rosa stared at him.

"Attempted murder?"

The agent turned toward her.
