Chapter 10 - THE VIDEO THAT LIED

The federal interview room had no windows, no clock, and no surface soft enough to make waiting comfortable.

Alessandro sat alone with his hands cuffed to a steel ring beneath the table.

He had been arrested before.

He had been questioned before.

He had never been accused of ordering the death of a man whose existence he had learned about less than twenty-four hours earlier.

The door opened.

Special Agent Daniel Hargrove entered carrying a laptop.

He was in his early fifties with tired eyes and the manner of a man who had already decided silence was another form of confession.

"Mr. Moretti."

Alessandro said nothing.

Hargrove sat across from him.

"Your attorney is on the way."

"Then you know I won't answer questions."

"I don't need an answer yet."

Hargrove opened the laptop.

"I need you to watch something."

A surveillance video appeared.

The timestamp was eighteen months earlier.

The location was the lobby of the West Fifty-Seventh Street construction site.

Alessandro appeared on screen.

Same height.

Same posture.

Same dark hair.

Same scar through the right eyebrow.

He stood beside Luca Romano.

Miguel Delgado was visible in the background between two men.

The recorded Alessandro spoke.

"He saw the shipments."

Luca nodded.

"What do you want done?"

The man wearing Alessandro's face answered.

"Make the fall convincing."

The video ended.

Chen requested the raw federal copy of the video and compared it with the version Hargrove had shown Alessandro.

The file hashes matched.

That should have reassured her.

It did not.

A forged video could remain perfectly unchanged after entering evidence.

The important question was who created it before the government received it.

She reviewed the intake chain.

The file arrived on an encrypted drive delivered to a federal field office by a confidential source.

The source number belonged to Hargrove.

Chen stared at the screen.

"He didn't just inherit this case."

Rosa looked over.

"He brought the video in himself?"

"Through a registered source."

"Who?"

"Sealed identity."

Rosa gave her a tired look.

"Another secret."

"Some secrets protect people who would be killed if exposed."

"And some protect people doing the killing."

Chen could not argue.

She requested emergency authorization to open the source identity.

The system denied her because Hargrove was the controlling agent.

Chen swore quietly.

Rosa watched.

"Can he block you?"

"Procedurally, yes."

"Even if he might be involved?"

"Until I establish cause."

Rosa shook her head.

"Everything bad in this story seems to have a procedure helping it."

Chen almost smiled.

"Procedures usually exist because somebody abused power before."

"Then somebody learned how to abuse the procedure too."

That sentence stayed with Chen.

She checked Hargrove's recent access history.

He had opened the Westchester clinic file seven times in the previous month.

He had also accessed Rosa's employment background before the engagement party.

Chen's expression changed.

"He knew who you were before tonight."

Rosa stared.

"Why would a federal agent look at a maid?"

"Because you were Miguel's wife."

"Or because someone asked him to watch you."

The possibility transformed Hargrove from a suspicious colleague into a direct threat.

Chen quietly messaged an internal affairs contact and requested that Hargrove's credentials be mirrored without alerting him.

The response came back.

APPROVED.

For the first time that night, one system worked before the betrayal became another body.

It was not enough to stop what happened next.

It was enough to make sure Hargrove could not erase everything afterward.

Hargrove watched him.

Alessandro stared at the frozen frame.

"That's not me."

"I expected that answer."

"Then why show it?"

"Because the original file was delivered to us six months ago."

Alessandro looked at him.

"By whom?"

"Anonymous source."

"Luca."

"Maybe."

Hargrove closed the laptop halfway.

"We authenticated the recording."

"Then your authentication is wrong."

"Facial analysis matched."

"My face can be copied."

"Voice matched."

"My voice can be copied."

"Gait matched."

Alessandro leaned back.

"You seem very proud of a lie."

Hargrove's expression did not change.

"We also have financial records connecting the property to shell companies used for illegal shipments."

"Luca controlled those accounts."

"Under your authority."

"Everything was under my authority."

"That is generally how leadership works."

Alessandro smiled faintly.

"And generally how framing leadership works."

Hargrove stood.

"Your lawyer will be here soon."

"Where is Rosa Delgado?"

"Safe."

The word irritated Alessandro instantly.

"Where is Lily?"

"With her mother."

"Where is Gabriel Russo?"

Hargrove paused.

"That's interesting."

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel Russo died three years ago."

Alessandro almost laughed.

"Your evening is going to become very complicated."

In another interview room, Rosa sat with Lily asleep across two chairs.

Agent Hargrove's partner, Maya Chen, placed the same laptop in front of her.

Rosa watched the video once.

Then again.

Her hands began shaking.

The man on screen looked exactly like Alessandro.

"You told officers Alessandro Moretti did not kidnap you."

"He didn't."

"You were found at a construction property connected to him."

"Because Luca left me there."

"Luca Romano works for Alessandro."

"Not anymore."

Chen leaned forward.

"Mrs. Delgado, powerful men are very good at making employees carry blame."

Rosa looked toward Lily.

"My daughter saved his life."

"That doesn't mean he saved your husband's."

The words hurt because they were reasonable.

Rosa stared at the image of fake Alessandro.

"Where did this video come from?"

"We can't disclose that."

"Then you want me to trust evidence you won't explain."

Chen said nothing.

Rosa looked more closely at the screen.

The man pretending to be Alessandro turned slightly.

Something bothered her.

She could not identify it.

"Play it again."

Chen did.

Rosa watched the face.

The mouth.

The shoulders.

The hands.

She had spent years cleaning rooms while wealthy people spoke around her as though she were furniture.

She had learned to notice what people did when they believed nobody important was watching.

The fake Alessandro touched his right eyebrow twice.

The real Alessandro had a scar there.

Rosa had seen him touch it only once during the entire engagement party, after smoke irritated his eye.

The fake touched it like a habit.

"Pause."

Chen stopped the video.

Rosa leaned closer.

"His ring."

"What about it?"

The man wore Alessandro's black signet ring on his right hand.

Rosa had polished that ring tray dozens of times.

She knew the Moretti crest.

"The crest is upside down."

Chen stared.

Rosa pointed.

"Mr. Moretti wears the point toward his fingertips."

"This man wears it toward his wrist."

Chen zoomed in.

The detail was tiny.

It was real.

Agent Chen did not trust video because she had spent nine years watching juries trust it too much.

People treated moving images as memory without a human weakness.

They forgot cameras could be placed selectively, timestamps manipulated, context removed, and now faces manufactured.

The Moretti recording bothered her before Rosa identified the ring.

Not because of one technical defect.

Because it was almost too useful.

It showed Alessandro's face clearly.

It captured Luca asking a direct question.

It captured a direct order.

It included Miguel in the background.

Every important element sat inside one clean frame.

Real conspiracies rarely arranged themselves for prosecution so politely.

Chen replayed it after Hargrove left the room.

Rosa watched beside her.

"He never looks at Miguel."

Chen paused.

"Who?"

"The fake Alessandro."

"He orders Miguel killed but never looks at him once."

Chen studied the frame.

"Maybe he didn't care."

Rosa shook her head.

"The real Alessandro looks at everyone."

"Even staff."

"Not because he is kind."

"Because he wants to know who is watching him."

Chen almost smiled.

"You notice a lot for someone people probably ignore."

"People who ignore maids talk freely."

Rosa pointed toward the fake Alessandro's shoulders.

"He stands too straight."

"Mr. Moretti has an old injury on the left side."

Chen looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"He keeps one shoulder lower after long dinners."

"I clean the dining room after he leaves."

Chen replayed footage from the engagement party for comparison.

Rosa was right.

The difference was subtle but measurable.

"This is enough to reopen authentication."

"Not enough to clear him."

"I did not say clear."

Rosa looked toward sleeping Lily.

"Good."

Chen seemed surprised.

"You don't want him cleared?"

"I want the truth."

"If he did bad things, charge him for those."

"If he did not kill Miguel, do not charge him because the video looks convenient."

Chen studied her.

"You would make an inconvenient witness."

"Miguel used to say the same thing."

The mention of her husband changed Rosa's face again.

Chen lowered her voice.

"If the body at the clinic is him, we will confirm before anyone tells Lily."

Rosa's eyes sharpened.

"You tell me first."

"Of course."

"And you do not say the word safe unless you know exactly what it means."

Chen paused.

Then she nodded.

"Fair."

That small promise would matter less than an hour later, when Hargrove's betrayal turned the federal building itself into another compromised room.

"Could he have put it on differently that night?"

"Maybe."

Rosa watched again.

"But look at the cuff."

A small monogram appeared when the fake Alessandro lifted his arm.

Not AM.

The letters looked like AR.

Chen's face sharpened.

"Who is A.R.?"

Rosa thought of the Moretti family.

Alessandro.

Salvatore.

Luca Romano.

Then she remembered a photograph in the underground archive.

A man standing near Salvatore at a union banquet.

"I don't know."

The door opened.

Hargrove entered and whispered to Chen.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

Hargrove looked at Rosa.

"The Westchester clinic was raided twenty minutes ago."

Rosa stood.

"Miguel?"

"The room where he was held is empty."

"Was he there?"

"DNA confirms he was."

Rosa closed her eyes.

Alive.

At least recently.

Hargrove continued.

"We also found a body in the basement."

Rosa froze.

"Male?"

"Yes."

"Age?"

"Approximately forty."

Her face drained.

"Is it Miguel?"

"We don't know yet."

Lily woke and saw her mother's fear.

She sat up immediately.

Rosa signed that everything was okay even though it was not.

Hargrove watched their hands.

"Your daughter uses ASL?"

"She's deaf."

"Did she see anything at the engagement party?"

Rosa's entire posture changed.

"She's three."

"That wasn't my question."

"She's three."

Hargrove looked toward Chen.

"We need a child interview specialist."

Rosa stepped between him and Lily.

"No."

"Mrs. Delgado, if she witnessed evidence in an attempted homicide-"

"She already watched her mother disappear."

"She was taken from a library."

"She watched men point guns tonight."

"You do not get to turn her into another room full of evidence because adults failed to protect her."

Chen raised a hand.

"No one is questioning her tonight."

Hargrove started to object.

Chen looked at him.

"Tonight."

He stopped.

Rosa picked up Lily.

"Where is Alessandro?"

Hargrove studied her.

"Why?"

"Because the video is wrong."

"You don't know that."

"The ring is upside down."

Hargrove's eyes narrowed.

Chen turned the laptop toward him.

They reviewed the frame.

Hargrove said nothing for a long moment.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

"When?"

He looked toward Rosa.

"Seal the building."

Chen stood.

"What happened?"

Hargrove lowered the phone.

"Alessandro Moretti's attorney never arrived."

"So?"

"Because his car was found abandoned three blocks away."

Rosa's stomach tightened.

Hargrove continued.

"And the man who came through security using his credentials wasn't his attorney."

An alarm began sounding in the hallway.

Footsteps rushed past the door.

Chen drew her weapon.

Rosa pulled Lily close.

Hargrove opened the door.

A wounded agent stumbled toward them.

Blood covered his shirt.

"Interview room four."

He gasped for breath.

"Moretti is gone."

Rosa stared.

Hargrove caught the agent before he fell.

"Who took him?"

The wounded man looked up.

May you like

"His uncle."
