Chapter 17 - THE GIRL IN THE MOVING CAR

Rosa regained consciousness on the kitchen floor with Miguel's hand pressed against her shoulder.
Rosa drove faster than she ever had in her life.
The stolen federal sedan felt too large beneath her hands.
Miguel sat beside her with a towel pressed against a cut near his temple.
"Slow down."
"No."
"If we crash, we do not help Lily."
Rosa reduced speed by five miles per hour.
That was the only compromise he received.
"Tell me something useful."
Miguel looked at Luca's abandoned phone.
"Vehicle three has a tracking handshake every ninety seconds."
"Can we follow it?"
"Maybe."
"Maybe is not useful."
Miguel almost smiled.
"You got meaner while I was dead."
Rosa looked at him.
"You got funnier while I was grieving."
The smile disappeared.
Miguel worked the phone.
A maintenance menu opened.
The vehicle identification ping showed southbound movement toward Brooklyn.
"I have him."
Rosa's entire body tightened.
"Where?"
"Near Red Hook."
The signal paused.
Then disappeared.
"Why did it stop?"
"Underground garage."
"Signal jammer."
"Or he destroyed the tracker."
Rosa hit the steering wheel once.
Miguel reached for her hand and stopped before touching it.
"Lily notices things."
Rosa stared ahead.
"Do not make me feel better with compliments."
"I'm not."
"I'm telling you the truth."
"She escaped Luca once in a blackout."
"She warned Alessandro before three hundred adults noticed anything."
"If she has one chance to make herself seen, she will take it."
Rosa's eyes filled.
"She's three."
"I know."
"She should be worrying about shoes and cartoons."
"I know."
Rosa wiped her cheek angrily.
"When this ends, nobody gets to call her brave as an excuse for what we failed to prevent."
Miguel looked at her.
"Agreed."
For the first time since their reunion, they sounded like parents together rather than survivors arguing over the past.
The protected apartment looked as if a storm had passed through it.
The front door hung crooked from one hinge.
A federal agent lay unconscious near the hallway.
Glass covered the floor.
The second agent was gone.
So was Lily.
Rosa sat up too quickly.
"Where is she?"
Miguel's face answered before he spoke.
"Luca took her."
Rosa struck him across the chest.
"No."
"Rosa-"
"No."
She pushed herself upright.
"We just got you back."
"We were all here."
"There were federal agents."
"How does one man keep walking into every place where people promise my daughter is protected?"
Miguel looked toward the unconscious agent.
"He wasn't alone."
"One of the protection agents opened the door from inside."
Rosa stopped.
"Who?"
"Agent Keller."
The missing second agent.
Hargrove's corruption had not ended with Hargrove.
Rosa laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"Of course."
She found Lily's rabbit beneath the kitchen table.
Hopper had been dropped during the struggle.
Rosa picked it up and pressed the worn fabric to her chest.
Miguel reached for her.
She stepped away.
"Don't."
"Rosa."
"Every man around us keeps saying he is protecting us."
"Gabriel protected you by making you dead."
"Salvatore protected Alessandro by lying to him."
"Alessandro protected Lily in a library where she was taken."
"Federal agents protected her behind a door they opened themselves."
Her eyes burned.
"I am done being protected."
Miguel had no defense.
He handed her the phone Luca had dropped during the attack.
The device was locked.
One notification remained visible.
VEHICLE 3 - SOUTHBOUND.
Miguel looked at the time.
"They left six minutes ago."
Rosa grabbed her coat.
"Then we're six minutes behind."
At the Duca estate, Alessandro watched Lily's one-word plea replay in his mind long after the call ended.
Vivian stood ten feet away under federal guard.
Her white wedding gown was stained at one shoulder where she had hit the chapel floor.
Alessandro turned toward her.
"Where would Luca take her?"
Vivian looked genuinely shaken.
"I don't know."
"You built his network with him."
"I financed pieces of it."
"Where?"
"He has safe houses everywhere."
Alessandro stepped closer.
Chen moved between them.
"Threatening her does not help the child."
Alessandro ignored her.
"Luca uses places with emotional meaning."
"Floor fourteen for Miguel."
"My mansion tunnels for Rosa."
"The marina for Salvatore."
He studied Vivian.
"What place does he think belongs to him?"
Vivian's face changed.
Matteo noticed.
"You know."
She looked away.
Alessandro's voice lowered.
"Tell me."
"The laundromat."
The word struck him with old memory.
Fifteen years earlier, Alessandro had found Luca bleeding behind a laundromat in Brooklyn.
The building had closed long ago.
Alessandro bought the property years later because Luca once joked that he wanted to own the place where his second life began.
He gave it to Luca on the tenth anniversary of the ambush.
A sentimental gift.
A property Alessandro had never inspected afterward.
"Address."
Vivian gave it.
Alessandro turned toward the door.
Chen caught his arm.
"We go with a team."
"A team announces itself."
"You're not walking into a hostage site alone."
"He wants me alone."
"Exactly."
Alessandro looked at her.
"And every person added to the plan increases the number Luca can buy."
Chen flinched because Hargrove made the argument difficult to dismiss.
"Then we use people he doesn't know."
Matteo stepped forward.
"Take me."
Alessandro stared at him.
"No."
"Vivian used me to provoke you."
"Luca just learned I was supposed to replace him."
"He may want me too."
"That is the reason you stay here."
Matteo's jaw tightened.
"You do not get to become my older brother for ten minutes and give orders."
Alessandro almost smiled despite everything.
"Apparently you inherited the irritating part."
Gabriel approached with a tablet.
"Traffic cameras found the vehicle."
A black Duca SUV moved south through Brooklyn.
A second camera caught it three blocks from the laundromat.
Then it disappeared.
"He's there."
Alessandro left.
Inside the moving SUV, Lily sat between Luca and Agent Keller.
Her hands were bound loosely with a plastic restraint because Keller had insisted she was a child and did not need more.
Luca had not argued.
He was bleeding from a cut along his temple.
His expensive suit was torn.
Lily watched him.
She could not hear the engine.
She felt its vibration through the seat.
She watched streetlights move across Luca's face.
He looked different from the man at the party.
Smaller somehow.
Angrier.
Lily lifted her hands as far as the restraint allowed.
Mama?
Luca recognized the sign from months of watching Rosa communicate with the child around the mansion.
"Your mother is alive."
Lily did not understand his spoken answer.
Keller gestured clumsily.
Alive.
Lily stared at him.
Then she pointed at herself.
Home.
Luca looked away.
The child repeated it.
Home.
Something about the simple request irritated him more than shouting would have.
"Stop."
Lily watched his mouth.
She did not stop.
Mama.
Home.
Papa.
Home.
Luca reached over and pushed her hands down.
Lily stared at him with sudden fury.
Then she kicked his shin.
Keller almost laughed.
Luca's head turned.
The agent's amusement vanished.
"She's three."
"She destroyed fifteen years in three seconds."
Keller looked at Lily.
"She warned him?"
"She saw Vivian."
Luca's face darkened.
"And Alessandro believed her."
Keller frowned.
"You kidnapped a toddler because she signed something?"
Luca stared at him.
"I kidnapped leverage."
Keller looked increasingly uncomfortable.
He had taken bribes to redirect information.
He had agreed to open a door.
He had not expected the target to be a barefoot child clutching a stuffed rabbit.
"This wasn't what Hargrove said."
"Hargrove is in handcuffs."
"His opinion has become less valuable."
Keller looked out the window.
Lily watched him.
She noticed the tension in his mouth.
She had spent her whole life reading faces.
She leaned slightly toward him.
Her hands moved.
Help.
Keller looked at her.
Lily repeated it.
Help.
Luca did not see.
Keller swallowed.
He turned his head toward the front windshield.
Then, beneath the line of Luca's sight, he opened his hand.
Lily understood.
She placed her restrained fingers against his palm.
Keller slipped a small metal key between them.
Lily closed her fist.
The SUV stopped.
Luca opened the door.
"Inside."
The old laundromat had been converted into a private apartment behind shuttered windows.
The original machines were gone except for one rusted dryer bolted to the back wall.
Luca led Lily downstairs.
Keller followed.
In the basement, a steel table stood beneath a single light.
On it rested photographs from fifteen years of Alessandro and Luca's lives together.
Hospital photographs.
Weddings.
Funerals.
Business openings.
A photograph of the Queens parking garage ambush.
Lily stared at them without understanding.
Luca picked up the ambush photograph.
"He thinks he saved me."
Keller said nothing.
"Everyone thinks the bullet proved I loved him."
Luca touched the scar on his cheek.
"Want to know the funniest part?"
Keller looked toward the stairs.
"Not particularly."
Luca smiled.
"The bullet was never meant for Alessandro."
Keller frowned.
"What?"
"I arranged the ambush."
Lily watched Luca's mouth but understood none of the confession.
"I needed him to trust me completely."
"I paid a shooter to miss him."
"The idiot hit me instead."
Luca laughed quietly.
"I nearly died proving loyalty I had invented."
Keller stared at him.
"You're insane."
"No."
Luca placed the photograph down.
"I was patient."
A light flashed through the basement window.
Luca went still.
A vehicle had entered the alley.
He looked at Keller.
"He's here."
Keller's face tightened.
Lily's small fingers closed around the hidden key.
May you like
And upstairs, Rosa Delgado stepped out of a stolen federal sedan three minutes before Alessandro Moretti reached the same block.
