Chapter 4 - WHEN THE HOUSE WENT DARK

The Moretti mansion had backup generators capable of powering the estate through a hurricane.
They did not activate.
That told Alessandro the darkness was deliberate.
He drew his weapon before the first guard finished shouting.
"Lock the perimeter."
Rain hammered the front drive.
Emergency flashlights began appearing in the hands of security staff.
Marco was already speaking into his radio.
"Generator room isn't responding."
Alessandro turned toward the mansion.
"Lily."
He ran.
Inside, the darkness swallowed the marble entrance hall.
Only the red glow of emergency exit signs remained.
Alessandro moved through the corridor with Marco behind him.
The library door stood open.
Bennett lay on the floor.
Blood darkened the side of his head.
The couch was empty.
Hopper lay beneath it.
Alessandro felt something inside him rupture.
He crouched beside Bennett.
The doctor was breathing.
"Who?"
Bennett's eyes opened weakly.
"Didn't see."
He swallowed.
"Someone killed the lights, hit me from behind."
Alessandro looked at the empty couch.
"The girl?"
"Gone."
Marco called for a medic.
Alessandro picked up Hopper.
The rabbit's torn ear hung from his hand.
He remembered Lily signing safe.
She had trusted that word because her mother had taught it to her.
Alessandro had repeated it.
Now both mother and child had vanished inside his house.
"Seal every internal door."
Marco looked at him.
"If Luca has her, sealing doors could trap her with him."
"If Luca has her, the doors are the only reason he hasn't already driven away."
They split the security teams into pairs.
Alessandro refused to remain in the command room.
He moved through the mansion personally.
Guest rooms.
Pantries.
Service halls.
Wine storage.
Staff quarters.
The darkness transformed familiar rooms into hostile territory.
At the east staircase, Alessandro found one of his guards unconscious.
At the basement landing, he found a dropped flashlight and a smear of blood.
Then he felt a vibration beneath his shoes.
Three dull impacts traveled through the floor.
Pause.
Three more.
Alessandro stopped.
Marco nearly walked into him.
"What?"
Alessandro lifted a hand.
Three impacts came again.
He could barely hear them over alarms and radios.
A deaf child would not have relied on sound.
She would have relied on vibration.
Alessandro crouched and placed his palm against the floor.
Three taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
"She's below us."
They followed the vibration toward the old wine cellar.
The cellar door was locked from the inside.
Marco shot the hinge.
Alessandro kicked it open.
Rows of bottles disappeared into darkness.
At the far wall, a small shadow moved behind an iron rack.
Lily.
She held a metal serving spoon in one hand and struck it against a heating pipe.
Three times.
Pause.
Three times.
Alessandro crossed the room and dropped to one knee.
Lily ran into him.
Her arms wrapped around his neck.
He felt the child's body shaking.
He signed against her back where she could see his hand.
Safe.
Lily pulled away and shook her head violently.
Not safe.
She pointed toward the wall behind the wine rack.
Man took Mama.
Alessandro looked at the bottles.
There was no doorway.
Lily pointed lower.
A narrow strip of light showed beneath the baseboard.
Marco examined the rack.
"This wall is false."
They found a concealed latch behind a wooden case.
The entire shelving unit shifted forward.
Cold air moved through the opening.
Behind it was a narrow stone passage descending beneath the mansion.
Alessandro stared into the darkness.
His grandfather had built the oldest wing during Prohibition.
Rumors existed about tunnels used to move liquor and cash beneath the estate.
Alessandro had never found them.
Apparently, Luca had.
Lily tugged his sleeve.
She signed that the scar man had grabbed her from the library.
He had carried her toward the basement.
Then the lights from his phone had flashed.
He stopped.
Someone called him.
Lily bit his hand.
She ran.
He followed.
She slipped behind the wine rack before he saw where she went.
Lily pointed down the passage.
Mama.
Alessandro wanted to send the child upstairs.
Lily refused to release his sleeve.
Bennett had been attacked.
Rosa was missing.
Every trusted layer inside the house had been penetrated.
Alessandro made a decision that would have seemed insane twelve hours earlier.
He kept Lily with him.
Marco moved first with a flashlight.
Alessandro followed, carrying Lily on one arm and Hopper under the other.
The tunnel descended beneath the foundation.
The hidden passage beneath the wine cellar smelled of wet stone, rust, and something faintly medicinal.
Lily noticed the smell before Alessandro did.
She wrinkled her nose and pointed toward a ventilation grate.
Rosa had taught her signs for household smells because scent often warned her about dangers she could not hear.
Cleaning chemical.
Smoke.
Gas.
Medicine.
Lily signed medicine.
Alessandro looked toward Marco.
"Why would there be medicine down here?"
Marco swept the flashlight along the wall.
A recently installed ventilation tube ran beside century-old brick.
"Someone has been using these rooms regularly."
They found empty water bottles with recent expiration dates.
Disposable gloves.
A folded blanket.
A battery charger.
This was not an abandoned tunnel rediscovered once for a kidnapping.
It was infrastructure.
Luca had built a hidden workplace beneath Alessandro's own home.
The insult felt almost architectural.
Every dinner upstairs had taken place above secrets.
Every family meeting had been held over a floor containing files designed to replace him.
Alessandro touched the brick wall.
"How long?"
Marco examined a cable installation sticker.
"At least four years."
Four years.
Alessandro remembered Luca recommending renovation delays in the west wing because contractors were supposedly unreliable.
He remembered trusting him.
Lily tugged his sleeve.
She pointed at one of the empty water bottles.
A small black mark had been drawn on the label.
A star.
Lily became excited.
Papa.
Alessandro crouched.
Your father made that mark?
Lily nodded with the certainty of a child remembering a tiny repeated habit.
Rosa had shown her photographs of Miguel's work bottles because he always drew a star on his lunch and drinks so coworkers would not take them.
Alessandro picked up the bottle.
The expiration date was six months after Miguel's reported death.
He showed Marco.
"If this was his, he was here after the funeral."
Lily pressed both palms against the wall.
Then she moved to another section and did it again.
Alessandro watched.
"What is she doing?"
Marco shook his head.
Lily knocked lightly on the brick and felt the vibration.
One section answered differently.
Hollow.
She pointed.
Alessandro tested it himself.
The child was right.
Behind a loose brick, they found a narrow cavity containing a folded piece of foil.
Inside was a tiny pencil stub and three numbers scratched onto the wall.
14.
214.
11-16.
Alessandro recognized the last number as his wedding date.
Fourteen connected to the construction floor.
Two hundred fourteen matched the brass key.
November sixteen matched the hidden archive wall.
Miguel had left breadcrumbs inside the place where Luca held him.
Lily touched the pencil.
Then she signed a word that made Alessandro look at her twice.
Papa.
He realized the child was not remembering the pencil itself.
She was remembering photographs of Miguel with a pencil tucked behind his ear while working.
Tiny details.
Things adults discarded as irrelevant.
Lily collected them because her world had always depended on looking closely.
Alessandro felt a new kind of respect for the child beside him.
He had spent his life believing power belonged to the person with the most men, money, and information.
A barefoot three-year-old was teaching him that information belonged first to whoever bothered to notice it.
Old brick walls sweated moisture.
Rusting hooks hung from the ceiling where crates had once been suspended.
They passed three empty rooms.
The fourth contained a chair.
Rope lay cut on the floor.
Fresh blood stained one armrest.
Lily struggled in Alessandro's arms.
Mama.
He set her down.
She touched the blood.
Then she shook her head.
Not Mama.
Alessandro looked closer.
A man's cuff link lay beneath the chair.
Silver.
Engraved with the initials M.D.
Miguel Delgado.
Marco stared.
"He's been dead eighteen months."
Alessandro picked up the cuff link.
"Maybe."
The tunnel continued beyond the room.
At the end, they found a steel door with a modern electronic lock installed into hundred-year-old brick.
The power failure had disabled it.
Marco forced it open.
The room beyond was not old.
It contained filing cabinets, surveillance monitors, burner phones, and boxes of documents.
A private archive.
Luca's archive.
On one wall hung photographs of judges, union officials, business owners, police officers, and members of the Moretti family.
Some had dates written beneath them.
Some had dollar amounts.
Some had red X marks.
Alessandro saw his own photograph at the center.
Vivian's was beside it.
A red string connected the two.
Luca's photograph had been pinned beneath theirs.
Across the bottom someone had written one date.
NOVEMBER 16.
Alessandro's wedding date.
Marco opened a filing cabinet.
Each drawer contained labeled folders.
Duca.
Moretti.
Ports.
Judges.
Police.
Delgado.
Alessandro grabbed the Delgado folder.
Inside was Miguel's employment record.
A photograph.
Copies of bank transfers.
And a report dated eighteen months earlier.
SUBJECT DISCOVERED UNAUTHORIZED SHIPMENTS THROUGH SITE ELEVATOR.
The next line made Alessandro stop breathing.
SUBJECT DETAINED PENDING ROMANO INSTRUCTION.
Lily touched a photograph clipped to the back page.
Miguel stood alive in the same underground room.
His face was bruised.
His hands were tied.
The photograph had been taken three days after Rosa was told he had died.
Lily stared at her father's face.
Her mouth opened.
No sound came that Alessandro could hear.
Then a monitor on the far wall flickered to life as backup power returned.
A live camera feed appeared.
Rosa sat bound to a chair in a different room.
Vivian stood behind her.
Luca stood in front of her.
And between them, on the table, was the same crystal wine glass Alessandro had supposedly drunk from.
Luca looked directly into the camera.
May you like
"Now we can talk, brother."
