Chapter 16 - THE CHAPEL OF ENEMIES

Luca Romano stared at Matteo Vale as though a ghost had walked into the chapel wearing Alessandro's eyes.

The resemblance was not perfect.

Matteo's face was leaner.

His hair curled slightly at the temples.

There was no scar through his eyebrow.

But the shape of the eyes, the stillness of the mouth, and the way he studied a room before taking another step belonged unmistakably to Carlo Moretti's bloodline.

Luca looked at Vivian.

"You found him."

Vivian's smile did not change.

"Years ago."

"You told me the search failed."

"I told you what kept you useful."

Twenty-two witnesses heard the sentence.

Several Duca lawyers lowered their eyes.

Luca looked around the chapel and finally understood why almost everyone present belonged to Vivian's side.

The marriage was not a celebration.

It was a transfer ceremony.

And he was the asset being transferred.

Matteo stepped forward.

Matteo Vale had spent thirty-seven years believing his history was ordinary.

His father repaired commercial refrigeration systems in Newark.

His mother taught second grade until arthritis forced her to retire.

They had never been rich.

They had also never made him feel that money was the measure of family.

Thomas Vale died two years earlier after a robbery outside his workshop.

Police called it random.

Vivian arrived in Matteo's life months later with a different story.

She showed him photographs of Carlo Moretti.

Then photographs of Alessandro.

Then medical records suggesting Thomas had accepted money to raise another man's son.

Matteo rejected her twice.

The third time, she brought the video showing a man with Alessandro's face standing near Thomas before his death.

That broke something open.

Grief that had been random suddenly had a target.

Matteo wanted the target to be real because anger felt easier than uncertainty.

Now he stood inside the Duca chapel holding proof that the target had been manufactured.

He looked at Vivian.

"Did Thomas know who my biological father was?"

Vivian hesitated.

"Probably."

"Did you ever ask him?"

"No."

"Then everything you told me about him taking money was a guess."

"An informed conclusion."

Matteo laughed without humor.

"That is what people call a guess when lawyers are present."

Alessandro watched him carefully.

The anger in Matteo was real.

So was the humiliation of realizing someone had converted grief into a weapon.

Alessandro understood that feeling too well.

"Thomas Vale's death will be investigated separately."

Matteo looked at him.

"By your people?"

"No."

Alessandro glanced at Chen.

"By people whose evidence can survive daylight."

That answer made Chen look at him differently.

Less like a fugitive trying to regain control.

More like a man beginning to understand that control itself had become part of the problem.

"Which one of you can explain why my father's death certificate is connected to Alessandro Moretti?"

Luca frowned.

"Your father?"

"The man who raised me."

Vivian touched Matteo's arm.

"We discussed this."

Matteo pulled away.

"You showed me a video."

"I asked for records."

"You said I would get them here."

Vivian looked toward one of the attorneys.

A folder appeared.

Before she could take it, the chapel doors opened again.

Alessandro entered.

Every armed man in the room moved at once.

Guns cleared jackets.

Hands disappeared beneath suit coats.

The officiant dropped his book and backed against the altar.

Alessandro did not draw his weapon.

Agent Chen walked in behind him with a federal badge raised.

Gabriel Russo came through a side door.

Two more agents entered from the rear.

Vivian's expression barely changed.

"You always did enjoy interrupting ceremonies."

Alessandro looked at the white gown.

"You changed grooms quickly."

Luca turned toward him.

For the first time in fifteen years, they faced each other without pretending the past meant anything.

"You should be in custody."

"You should be married."

Alessandro glanced at Vivian.

"Apparently both systems are having problems today."

Matteo stared at Alessandro.

Chen ordered every person in the chapel to place phones on the floor.

The Duca lawyers protested first.

The guards protested second.

Vivian did not protest at all.

That worried Chen most.

People who believed they could still control the room often objected loudly when control was taken away.

Vivian watched silently because she believed another layer still belonged to her.

Matteo noticed the same thing.

"What are you waiting for?"

Vivian looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You are surrounded by agents and the man you tried to replace is standing ten feet away."

"You should be angry."

"You should be scared."

"Instead you're waiting."

Luca turned toward her.

For the first time, suspicion appeared without Alessandro having to create it.

Vivian smiled at Matteo.

"You learned quickly."

"Thomas Vale taught me to watch people who stop talking when they should be defending themselves."

The mention of his adoptive father changed her face.

Small.

Enough.

Alessandro saw it.

"Thomas knew something."

Vivian said nothing.

Matteo stepped closer.

"Did my father know Carlo Moretti?"

"Not directly."

Too fast.

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"You answered a question I didn't ask."

Vivian realized the mistake.

He continued.

"I asked whether Thomas knew something."

"You told me he didn't know Carlo directly."

"So he knew something indirectly."

Alessandro looked at Chen.

She understood.

Thomas Vale's death was not only leverage used against Matteo.

It might be another piece of the original Duca secret.

Vivian finally looked annoyed.

"This is not the time."

Matteo laughed.

"You dragged me into a wedding with a fake murder video and now you want scheduling etiquette?"

Even Luca smiled at that.

Then his smile faded when he realized Matteo had become another person in the room Vivian could no longer predict.

Her plan depended on isolated men receiving curated truths.

The chapel had placed all of them together.

Secrets were losing value by the minute.

The resemblance became more uncomfortable at close range.

"Are you Alessandro Moretti?"

"Yes."

"Did you kill Thomas Vale?"

Alessandro looked at Vivian.

"I don't know who Thomas Vale is."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"She showed me video."

"She showed federal agents video of me ordering another man's death."

Alessandro removed a photograph from his coat and slid it across a pew.

It showed Adrian Rusk without makeup beside the reference images used to transform him into Alessandro.

Matteo picked it up.

His anger faltered.

"Who is this?"

"A man paid to wear my face."

Vivian laughed softly.

"Convenient."

Chen produced a sealed evidence printout.

"His fingerprints are on equipment recovered from the staged recording location."

"We also have payment records from accounts controlled by Luca Romano."

Luca's head snapped toward Vivian.

"You said those accounts were clean."

Vivian ignored him.

Alessandro looked at Matteo.

"I do not know whether Carlo Moretti was your biological father."

"But if he was, someone used that fact to bring you here angry enough to point in whatever direction they chose."

Matteo looked down at the folder Vivian had prepared.

"Open it."

Vivian's voice sharpened.

"Matteo."

"Open it."

One of the lawyers hesitated.

Matteo took the folder himself.

Inside were DNA reports, old hospital files, and a copy of Carlo Moretti's private medical profile.

The genetic report showed a high probability of paternity.

Matteo read it twice.

His hands shook.

Alessandro watched his face.

A brother had appeared in his life less than one hour after the uncle who raised him had died.

He felt no joy.

No anger.

Only exhaustion at discovering another room in a house he thought he already knew.

"If this is real, we'll verify it independently."

Matteo looked at him.

"You believe it could be?"

"I've learned not to call impossible anything that comes with paperwork in this family."

Luca moved away from the altar.

"This changes nothing."

Vivian turned.

"It changes everything."

"The trust activates with our marriage."

"The trust activates when a Duca spouse becomes legally attached to the beneficiary."

Vivian's voice became almost gentle.

"You are not the beneficiary, Luca."

He stared at her.

The chapel went silent.

"What did you say?"

Vivian looked at Matteo.

"He is."

Matteo stepped back.

"I never signed anything."

"You signed an identity petition yesterday."

"For DNA access."

"The petition also established a provisional claim against Carlo Moretti's dormant family trust."

Chen's face hardened.

"You misrepresented legal documents to him."

One of Vivian's attorneys began edging toward a side door.

Gabriel blocked it.

Luca stared at Vivian as every piece rearranged itself.

The assets he had diverted into a succession trust were never intended for him.

Vivian needed the trust funded.

She needed Alessandro discredited or dead.

Then she needed a blood relative who could be presented as a cleaner successor.

Matteo had no criminal record.

No organization.

No loyal captains.

No idea how the money worked.

He would be easy to surround.

Easy to control.

"You used me to build his inheritance."

Vivian's smile disappeared.

"I used you to move stolen assets somewhere recoverable."

Luca took one step toward her.

Duca guards raised weapons.

His face changed.

He finally saw the room accurately.

"You were going to give me to the government."

"Eventually."

"After marrying me."

"The ceremony was never going to be filed."

Luca laughed once.

It sounded almost broken.

"Fifteen years."

He looked at Alessandro.

"I betrayed you for this."

Alessandro's expression stayed cold.

"You betrayed me for yourself."

"Do not blame her for giving you a better excuse."

Luca's humiliation turned immediately into rage.

He drew his weapon.

Chen shouted.

Everyone moved.

Luca did not aim at Alessandro.

He aimed at Vivian.

Matteo knocked her sideways before the shot fired.

The bullet shattered a stained-glass panel behind the altar.

Duca guards fired.

Luca dove behind a pew.

Alessandro pulled Matteo to the floor.

Gabriel tackled one gunman.

Chen shouted for everyone to drop their weapons.

A second shot struck the ceiling.

Then the chapel lights died.

Vivian screamed an order from the darkness.

Emergency lights came on red.

Luca was gone.

A side door stood open.

Alessandro reached it first.

Outside, tire tracks cut across the wet grass toward the rear gate.

Luca had escaped in a Duca security vehicle.

Chen cursed.

Her phone finally recovered a signal.

Seven missed calls appeared.

All from the protected apartment.

She called back.

No answer.

Alessandro looked at her face.

"Rosa."

Chen dialed again.

This time someone answered.

Not Rosa.

Luca.

His breathing was heavy.

"Brother."

Alessandro's blood went cold.

"Where are they?"

Luca laughed.

"You keep asking the wrong question."

"Ask who I took."

Alessandro gripped the phone.

"Luca."

A tiny hand appeared on the video call.

Lily's hand.

She signed one word before the screen went black.
