Chapter 12 - ONE HOUR TO SAVE A DEAD MAN

Rosa did not ask Agent Chen for permission to leave.
She stood, lifted Lily, and walked toward the interview-room door.
Chen blocked it.
"You cannot go to a ransom exchange with a three-year-old child."
"Then help me find Alessandro."
"He's a federal fugitive."
"He's also the man Luca wants."
"That does not make him safe."
Rosa's eyes flashed.
"Nobody in this building has been safe tonight."
Hargrove entered.
"Phone trace came back."
Chen looked at him.
"Where?"
"Staten Island."
Rosa closed her eyes.
The marina.
She did not know Salvatore's team had found the same location.
Hargrove picked up his coat.
"Tactical unit is moving."
Chen frowned.
"Who authorized that?"
"I did."
"We have a hostage."
"We have a fugitive criminal organization holding a hostage."
"Those are not mutually exclusive."
Hargrove stared at her.
"Are you questioning the operation?"
"I'm questioning why you're rushing into a site thirty seconds after a trace."
Rosa watched them.
Something in Hargrove's face changed.
Not fear.
Irritation.
Chen noticed it too.
"Daniel, who told you we had the marina address before the trace finished?"
Hargrove's hand moved toward his belt.
Chen drew first.
"Don't."
Rosa grabbed Lily and backed into the corner.
Hargrove looked almost offended.
"Maya."
"Hands on the table."
"You're making a mistake."
"Then let me make it while your hands are visible."
Hargrove slowly placed them on the table.
Chen removed his weapon.
"Unlock your phone."
"No."
"Daniel."
"You have no authority to search it."
"Then tell me why Luca Romano knew our internal response time."
Hargrove smiled faintly.
Rosa felt the room go cold.
"You think I work for Romano?"
Chen did not blink.
"I think the federal video arrived through your case intake."
"I think you pushed an operation toward the Westchester clinic before confirming whether Miguel was still there."
"And I think you just ordered a tactical team toward a marina where a hostage is being used to lure Alessandro."
Hargrove's smile disappeared.
"You're tired."
"Unlock the phone."
He lunged.
Chen stepped back.
Hargrove struck her wrist and drove her into the wall.
Rosa grabbed the metal chair and swung it into his back.
He turned in shock.
"You little-"
Chen tackled him before he finished.
Two agents entered at the sound of the struggle.
Within seconds, Hargrove was handcuffed on the floor.
Hargrove stopped struggling once the second pair of agents entered the room.
His resistance turned into calculation so quickly that Chen recognized the professional instinct beneath the betrayal.
He knew violence had failed.
Now he would begin bargaining.
"Maya."
"Don't."
"You need to listen before you turn this into something larger than it is."
Chen stared at him.
"You sold operational information to organized crime."
"It is already larger than you deserve."
Hargrove looked toward Rosa.
"She should not be here."
Rosa tightened her grip on Lily.
"I have heard that sentence from many men tonight."
Chen ordered the other agents to take Lily and Rosa into the adjoining room.
Rosa refused.
"If he knows where Miguel is, I stay."
Hargrove laughed softly.
"That's the problem with civilians."
"You think every fact belongs to you because it hurts personally."
Rosa stepped closer.
"My husband was kept alive for eighteen months while people traded facts about him."
"Yes."
"I think I have earned one."
Hargrove's expression shifted.
He had expected fear from a maid.
He found fury instead.
Chen placed his phone inside an evidence bag.
"Who pays you?"
"Nobody pays me."
"The ledger says otherwise."
Hargrove's eyes flickered.
Chen noticed.
"You know about the ledger."
He said nothing.
"How?"
"Because half the people hunting it have been under federal investigation for years."
"That doesn't explain your messages."
Hargrove looked at the floor.
"Information management."
Chen laughed once.
"That's what you're calling it?"
"I gave Luca information to keep him predictable."
"You warned him about raids."
"I warned him about smaller operations so he would keep using channels we could monitor."
Chen stared.
"Did headquarters authorize that?"
Silence.
"Did anyone authorize it?"
Hargrove's jaw tightened.
"Results require flexibility."
Rosa looked at Chen.
"He sounds like Salvatore."
Chen did not know who Salvatore was in the emotional map of Rosa's night, but she understood the accusation anyway.
Hargrove continued.
"Luca fed us corrupt judges, port theft, two homicide conspiracies, and a smuggling network."
"In exchange, he got warnings."
"Limited warnings."
"People died."
"People die in long investigations."
Rosa's face changed.
Chen stepped forward before she could.
"That sentence ends your career even if every other charge disappears."
Hargrove looked toward sleeping Lily.
"You think Moretti is different?"
"You think Delgado is different?"
"Every person in this case made compromises."
Rosa answered.
"My daughter didn't."
The room went silent.
Hargrove looked at Lily.
For the first time, shame appeared.
It lasted less than a second.
"Luca is going to kill Miguel if Moretti arrives at the marina."
Rosa's breath caught.
Chen leaned closer.
"How do you know?"
"Because that was always the contingency."
"Who told you?"
"Vivian."
Rosa stared.
Hargrove gave a tired smile.
"You all think Romano is the center of this."
"He isn't."
"The Duca family was using federal pressure before Luca ever started moving Moretti money."
Chen's face hardened.
"Then why help them?"
"Because Vittorio Duca had evidence on agents above me."
"Names."
Hargrove shook his head.
"Ledger."
The same word again.
Everything came back to whoever controlled the complete record.
Hargrove looked at Rosa.
"If Miguel still knows the encryption key, he is not surviving the morning unless you reach him first."
Rosa checked the time.
The countdown on Luca's demand had already lost fourteen minutes.
Rosa held Lily against her chest.
The child had buried her face against Rosa's shoulder.
Chen picked up Hargrove's phone.
A message flashed across the locked screen.
MARINA TEAM READY.
BURN IT IF MORETTI ARRIVES.
Chen stared down at her former partner.
"Who sent this?"
Hargrove said nothing.
Rosa looked at the time.
Forty-six minutes remained.
"Find Alessandro."
Chen made a decision that would later end her career as she knew it.
She called a number recovered from the church surveillance report.
Gabriel Russo answered.
"You have thirty seconds before I trace this."
Chen ignored the threat.
"Alessandro is heading to Staten Island."
Silence.
"How do you know?"
"Because Luca has Miguel at the marina."
Gabriel swore.
"Keep Rosa away."
Rosa stepped close to the phone.
"No."
Gabriel recognized her voice.
"Mrs. Delgado-"
"My husband has been hidden from me for eighteen months."
"Nobody is keeping me away now."
"Luca wants exactly that."
"Luca has gotten exactly what he wanted because everyone kept deciding things for me."
Gabriel went quiet.
Rosa continued.
"Tell Alessandro I am coming."
"And tell him Lily stays with me."
"No more rooms where somebody promises she is safe and disappears."
Gabriel exhaled.
"There is a church shelter three blocks from the marina."
"Meet me there."
"You do not go past that shelter with the child."
Rosa wanted to argue.
Lily touched her face.
The little girl signed.
Papa.
Rosa's anger cracked.
She nodded.
Alessandro arrived at the marina with Salvatore and three contingency men fifteen minutes before Luca's deadline.
Fog drifted between rows of docked boats.
Red lights blinked atop container cranes across the water.
The tracker signal came from a warehouse at the end of Pier Six.
Alessandro studied the building through binoculars.
Two guards outside.
One vehicle.
No visible Luca.
Salvatore looked at him.
"Too easy."
"Yes."
"So we wait."
"No."
Salvatore's jaw tightened.
"You have learned nothing."
"I learned that waiting eighteen months did not help Miguel."
Alessandro moved along the seawall.
Salvatore followed because arguing from behind was still better than letting him go alone.
They reached the warehouse without being seen.
Paul Neri disabled the exterior camera.
Alessandro opened a side door.
Inside, a single hanging lamp illuminated a chair.
Miguel Delgado sat beneath it.
His hands were tied.
His face was bruised.
He was alive.
Alessandro crossed the floor.
Miguel lifted his head.
"You came."
"Your wife is going to be angry that I found you first."
Miguel almost smiled.
Then his eyes moved past Alessandro.
"Uncle."
Alessandro turned.
Salvatore had stopped six feet away.
His face went blank.
Miguel stared at him.
"You."
Salvatore said nothing.
"You were there."
Alessandro looked between them.
"Where?"
Miguel's voice sharpened.
"The night they took me."
Salvatore closed his eyes briefly.
Alessandro felt the floor drop beneath his certainty.
"Explain."
Salvatore looked at Miguel.
"I tried to get you out."
"You stood beside Luca."
"Because if I exposed myself, we both died."
Miguel laughed bitterly.
"So you watched."
Alessandro stepped between them.
"We are not doing this while he's tied to a chair."
He cut Miguel's hands free.
The instant the rope fell, Miguel grabbed Alessandro's arm.
"This warehouse is wired."
Alessandro froze.
"How?"
"I saw them running cables."
"What kind?"
"I don't know."
"But Luca said if you came inside, the water would burn."
Salvatore looked toward the windows.
"Fuel tanks."
The marina stored diesel for private vessels along the outer pier.
A siren began pulsing outside.
Alessandro looked at his watch.
The deadline.
"Move."
They ran.
The first explosion erupted beneath the pier behind them.
Wood shattered upward.
A second blast ignited a line of fuel along the water.
Flames spread across the surface in a bright orange sheet.
Miguel stumbled.
Alessandro pulled him forward.
A van roared from behind a stack of containers.
Its side door opened.
Luca stood inside.
He raised a pistol.
Salvatore pushed Alessandro aside.
The shot hit Salvatore in the chest.
He fell.
Alessandro fired toward the van.
Luca disappeared behind the closing door.
The vehicle crashed through the marina gate and vanished into fog.
Alessandro dropped beside his uncle.
Blood spread across Salvatore's shirt.
Salvatore tried to breathe.
"Listen."
"Save it."
"Listen."
Alessandro pressed both hands against the wound.
Salvatore gripped his wrist.
"Vivian isn't Luca's partner."
Alessandro stared at him.
"What?"
Salvatore coughed.
"She owns him."
"The Duca family financed everything."
"Luca thinks he is taking your empire."
Salvatore's eyes began losing focus.
"Vivian plans to erase both of you."
A siren wailed beyond the burning docks.
Salvatore forced out one final sentence.
"Ask Miguel why Vivian was at the clinic when Lily was born."
His hand fell away.
Miguel stared at the dead man.
Alessandro slowly turned toward him.
"What does Lily's birth have to do with Vivian?"
Miguel's face became pale.
May you like
"Everything."
