Chapter 3 - THE MAID WHO DISAPPEARED

The name Miguel sat on Alessandro's desk like a dead man asking to be heard.
Rosa woke inside the service elevator with her cheek pressed against cold metal.
Her hands were tied behind her back.
The first thing she thought was Lily.
Not where am I.
Not who took me.
Lily.
Rosa forced herself upright as the elevator descended.
Luca stood beside the control panel.
His personal guard held Rosa by one shoulder.
"Where is my daughter?"
Luca looked at her reflection in the steel door.
"Safe."
Rosa almost laughed at the word.
"With who?"
"People who work for Alessandro."
"You work for Alessandro."
Luca turned.
The pleasant expression he used around guests was gone.
"Tonight, Rosa, you should be very careful about assuming who works for whom."
The elevator stopped below the basement.
The doors opened onto a brick tunnel Rosa had never seen despite cleaning the mansion for two years.
The guard pushed her forward.
Rosa stumbled.
"If you hurt my daughter-"
"Nobody wants the child."
Luca's irritation sounded genuine.
"This is about what you saw."
Rosa said nothing.
"The mirror."
He did not ask whether she had seen him with Vivian.
He told her exactly what mattered.
Rosa understood that denial was useless.
"I saw two people look at each other."
"Then forget it."
"Let me go and I will."
Luca smiled.
"That's what people say before they become brave in daylight."
They entered a narrow room containing a chair, a table, and an old drain in the floor.
Rosa's fear became physical.
She thought about Miguel's closed casket.
She thought about how many explanations powerful men could manufacture after a poor person disappeared.
"What happened to my husband?"
The question came out before she planned it.
Luca stopped.
His guard looked at him.
Rosa saw both reactions.
"You know his name."
Luca recovered quickly.
"I know many employees."
"Miguel wasn't your employee."
"Everyone on a Moretti property works for someone."
Rosa stared at him.
"Did you kill him?"
Luca stepped close enough that she could smell wine on his breath.
"Your husband made the mistake of believing information makes ordinary men powerful."
Rosa's eyes filled.
"Where is his body?"
Luca looked at her for a long second.
"You buried it."
The answer was too smooth.
Rosa heard the lie because she had repeated the official story to herself for eighteen months and knew exactly where it sounded hollow.
"No."
Luca's expression changed.
"What?"
"You didn't answer me."
"I asked where his body is."
"You told me where I buried a coffin."
The guard shifted uncomfortably.
Luca's eyes turned cold.
"Tie her down."
As the guard pushed Rosa into the chair, something small fell from the folded tablecloth still trapped beneath her arm.
Hopper.
Rosa had grabbed the rabbit from the ballroom floor just before Luca's men seized her because she knew Lily would panic without it.
The toy landed beneath the table.
Luca did not notice.
Rosa did.
She remembered Miguel repairing the rabbit months before he disappeared.
He had opened the seam along the back and told Rosa he was replacing stuffing.
At the time, she thought nothing of it.
Now Luca's reaction to Miguel's name made the memory feel different.
When the guard stepped out to answer a radio call, Rosa bent from the chair and caught Hopper with her shoe.
She dragged it closer.
Her bound fingers found the seam.
Something hard rested beneath the stuffing.
A key.
Rosa pulled it free.
She had only seconds.
She wrapped the key in a strip torn from a paper napkin in her apron pocket and wrote two words with a cosmetic pencil she used to mark cleaning inventory.
MIGUEL KNEW.
Then she pushed the key back inside Hopper just before Luca returned.
If Rosa disappeared, maybe Lily would keep the rabbit.
Maybe someone would find it.
It was a desperate plan built on a three-year-old child and a damaged toy.
It was still more honest than any promise Luca had made.
He unfolded the strip of paper and read it again.
MIGUEL KNEW.
Lily watched him with wide, exhausted eyes.
Marco leaned closer.
"Miguel Delgado?"
Alessandro looked at him.
"You know the name."
Marco hesitated.
That hesitation was enough to make the room colder.
"I know a Delgado died on one of our construction properties last year."
"One of ours?"
"A subcontractor under Moretti Development."
Alessandro's voice dropped.
"Why was I never told?"
"There are accidents on construction sites."
"Not accidents that make widows hide keys inside their children's toys."
Marco looked toward Lily.
"Boss, I didn't know she was his wife."
Alessandro turned back to the brass key.
It was old, scratched, and stamped with the number 214.
Bennett finished packing the wine evidence.
"I can get a toxicology screen through a private lab."
"Do it."
"If the result confirms what you think, you'll need more than a child's account."
Alessandro looked at the missing seven minutes of security footage.
"I already have more than a child's account."
Outside the study, Vivian knocked again.
"Alessandro."
Her voice sharpened.
"There are hundreds of people out here being held against their will."
Alessandro opened the door.
Vivian stood alone.
Her red gown looked flawless.
Her eyes moved immediately to Lily.
Then to Hopper.
Then to the brass key in Alessandro's hand.
Only a trained liar could have hidden the recognition that flashed across her face.
Vivian almost succeeded.
"What is that?"
Alessandro closed his fingers around the key.
"A reason to keep the gates closed."
Vivian stepped into the room.
"Your guests include judges, executives, and public officials."
"Then they understand investigations."
"Investigations into what?"
Alessandro watched her carefully.
"A missing maid."
Vivian relaxed by less than an inch.
"Rosa?"
That was the mistake.
Alessandro had never told her Rosa's name.
Marco's eyes shifted toward Vivian.
Vivian realized it too late.
"I heard the housekeeper say it outside."
"Did you?"
"Yes."
Alessandro smiled without warmth.
"Then you won't mind staying while we find her."
Vivian crossed her arms.
"You're frightening people."
"Good."
"This is our engagement party."
"Then pretend to be engaged."
The insult struck.
Vivian's nostrils flared.
For the first time that evening, her anger became visible.
"You humiliated Luca in front of everyone."
Alessandro's gaze sharpened.
"Interesting that you noticed his humiliation before mine."
Vivian went still.
Behind her, Luca appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He did not approach.
He watched.
Alessandro saw him through the open doorway.
The scar on Luca's cheek looked suddenly less like proof of loyalty and more like a signature Alessandro had never learned to read.
"Go back to your guests, Vivian."
"Our guests."
"Tonight, that distinction matters."
Vivian left without another word.
Luca waited until she passed before walking away in the opposite direction.
Marco shut the door.
"You want me to detain them?"
"No."
Marco looked surprised.
"Why not?"
"Because frightened people destroy evidence."
Alessandro slipped the brass key into his pocket.
"Confident people lead you to it."
He ordered the guests released in groups after security recorded names and vehicles.
Vivian objected loudly enough for witnesses to hear.
Luca apologized to officials and made himself useful.
Both behaved exactly as innocent people wanted to appear.
By midnight, the mansion was almost empty.
Lily had fallen asleep on a couch in the private library with Hopper beneath her chin.
Bennett stayed near her.
Alessandro and Marco entered the security room.
The missing footage had not been deleted from the central server.
It had been overwritten remotely using an administrative key.
Marco pulled up the access record.
The login belonged to him.
He stared at the screen.
"I didn't do this."
Alessandro's hand moved toward the pistol beneath his jacket.
Marco saw it.
"Boss, look at the time."
The administrative key had been used at 9:42 p.m.
Marco turned another monitor toward Alessandro.
At 9:42, Marco could be seen standing beside Alessandro in the ballroom while the orchestra changed songs.
"Someone cloned my credentials."
"Who has access to your office?"
"My deputy."
"Who appointed him?"
Marco's jaw hardened.
"Luca."
Alessandro leaned over the keyboard.
"Restore whatever you can."
Marco began searching backup fragments.
A hidden server used for insurance retention had captured low-resolution thumbnails every thirty seconds.
Most were useless.
One was not.
It showed Rosa inside the service elevator.
A man stood behind her.
The image was blurred, but the pale diagonal mark across his left cheek was unmistakable.
Luca.
Marco whispered a curse.
Alessandro said nothing.
A second thumbnail appeared.
The elevator had descended to the basement.
A third showed Luca leaving alone six minutes later.
Alessandro's phone vibrated.
It was Vivian.
He let it ring.
Then another call arrived from the front gate.
One of Luca's vehicles had just requested permission to leave.
Alessandro looked at Marco.
"Stop it."
Marco spoke into his radio.
The response came almost immediately.
"Vehicle stopped."
A pause followed.
Then the guard's voice changed.
"Mr. Moretti, you need to come outside."
Alessandro reached the front drive in less than two minutes.
Rain had begun falling over the estate.
A black SUV sat between two armored security vehicles.
The driver had both hands on the wheel.
The rear doors were open.
No Rosa.
No Luca.
Only a cardboard box on the back seat.
Alessandro approached.
Inside the box lay Rosa's maid uniform.
Her name tag had been placed on top.
Beneath it was a photograph of Miguel Delgado standing beside a construction elevator eighteen months earlier.
Someone had written a message across the photograph in black marker.
ASK YOUR BROTHER WHAT HAPPENED ON FLOOR FOURTEEN.
Alessandro had no biological brother.
Only one man in the organization had ever been called that by him.
Luca Romano.
Then the mansion lights went out.
Every window turned black at once.

And somewhere inside the dark house, Lily woke up alone.
