Chapter 15 - THE WEDDING THAT WASN'T FOR LOVE

Vivian Duca wore white at sunrise.

Vivian had met Luca in secret for the first time eleven months before the engagement party.

The meeting took place in a private dining room above a restaurant Alessandro owned in Manhattan.

That detail had amused her then.

Two people planning his future while eating food paid for by his company.

Luca arrived late.

Vivian had already ordered wine.

"You want peace between families?"

Luca sat across from her.

"I want leverage."

"Peace is leverage when everyone is tired."

Vivian studied him.

"And Alessandro?"

"Alessandro believes peace means fewer funerals."

"Does it?"

Luca smiled.

"Not necessarily."

Their alliance began without romance.

They traded information.

Vivian provided Duca financing channels.

Luca provided access to Moretti companies.

Vivian identified which legitimate assets could survive federal scrutiny.

Luca identified which captains would shift loyalty if paid.

They built a structure around Alessandro while he believed he was building a marriage around Vivian.

The affair came later.

Not because either mistook the other for love.

Because secrecy creates intimacy even between people who should know better.

Luca started believing their private relationship proved they wanted the same future.

Vivian never corrected him directly.

She simply allowed him to imagine himself beside her after Alessandro was gone.

The first major crack appeared when Miguel escaped Westchester.

Luca wanted to postpone everything.

Vivian wanted Alessandro dead immediately.

"The wedding is six weeks away."

Luca had argued in a parked car behind the mansion three nights earlier.

"We wait."

"Miguel can expose the hospital archive before then."

"He can expose you."

"Exactly."

Luca looked at her.

"You are asking me to accelerate fifteen years because one electrician got loose."

Vivian's face turned cold.

"One electrician has evidence connecting my father to Carlo Moretti's medical records."

Luca stared.

"You never told me that."

"You never needed to know."

That sentence should have warned him.

Instead, Luca focused on the danger.

"Then kill Miguel."

"We still need the ledger."

"Then recover him."

"Your people already lost him once."

Luca's jaw tightened.

Vivian leaned closer.

"Alessandro dies at the engagement party."

"Public event."

"Natural-looking collapse."

"Three hundred witnesses who see me grieving."

"No."

"That was not a request."

Luca looked at her for a long moment.

"After the wedding, you would have legal proximity to his estate."

"Before the wedding, you are just the woman who handed him a glass."

Vivian smiled.

"Only if someone notices the glass."

A barefoot three-year-old child noticed it.

Now, as Vivian stood in white beside Luca at the rushed chapel ceremony, she remembered that argument with growing contempt.

Luca had been right about one thing.

The timing had been terrible.

He was wrong about why.

Vivian did not need marriage to Alessandro.

She needed his death, Luca's stolen trust structure, and Matteo's blood claim to intersect before any one of them understood the others.

The chapel ceremony was designed to convince Luca the final transfer benefited him.

The lawyers knew otherwise.

The Duca guards knew otherwise.

Even the officiant had been instructed not to file the marriage certificate until Vivian gave written authorization.

Luca was standing at an altar built from his own misunderstanding.

Vivian almost felt sorry for him.

Then she remembered how easily he had kidnapped Rosa, manipulated federal agents, and staged deaths.

Men like Luca rarely recognized exploitation when they were the object instead of the author.

That made the lesson worth delivering personally.

The gown was simpler than the red silk dress she had worn at Alessandro's engagement party, but the simplicity made it more dangerous.

There were no journalists at the Duca estate.

No society photographers.

No three hundred guests.

Only twenty-two people stood inside the private chapel.

Most were lawyers, family representatives, or armed security.

Luca Romano waited at the altar.

The scar on his cheek looked pale beneath the morning light.

He did not look like a groom.

He looked like a man entering a room he had spent fifteen years trying to own.

Vivian stopped beside him.

"You look nervous."

"Alessandro is alive."

"For the moment."

"Adrian stole the ledger."

"Adrian will not survive the morning."

Luca glanced toward her.

"You say that very easily."

Vivian smiled.

"You used to admire that about me."

The officiant opened a small book.

Luca caught Vivian's wrist before he began.

"Where is Miguel?"

Vivian's smile remained.

"Gone."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only answer you need."

Luca's grip tightened.

"You told me he was still at the marina."

"And you told me Alessandro would die at the construction site."

They stared at each other.

The chapel guests pretended not to notice.

Vivian leaned closer.

"We are standing here because both of us failed last night."

"Do not confuse survival with failure."

"Alessandro has the key."

"Miguel is loose."

"Rosa is talking to federal agents."

"And a deaf toddler can identify me pouring poison into his glass."

Luca's eyes flashed.

"You poured it."

"You arranged it."

"I told you to wait until after the wedding."

"You lost control of Miguel."

Vivian's voice turned cold.

"I corrected your mistake."

Luca released her wrist.

"After today, you don't correct me."

Vivian smiled again.

"Of course."

He should have understood then.

He did not.

Forty miles away, Alessandro sat in the back of Chen's unmarked vehicle reading the master ledger.

Every page made his life uglier.

Judges he had believed were independent had accepted Luca's money.

Union leaders had shifted allegiance.

Two prosecutors had buried cases.

Three Moretti captains had secretly signed loyalty agreements with Luca.

Hargrove's name appeared beside federal intelligence leaks.

Marco's deputy appeared beside copied security credentials.

And Salvatore's name appeared repeatedly.

Sometimes beside payments.

Sometimes beside warnings.

Sometimes beside the notation UNRELIABLE.

Alessandro closed the book.

"My uncle was feeding Luca truth and lies at the same time."

Chen drove.

"That doesn't make him innocent."

"No."

"But it means the ledger can corroborate his double role."

Gabriel sat in the passenger seat.

"If we survive long enough to use it."

Adrian had been taken to a hospital under guard.

Marco remained in New York coordinating loyal security.

Miguel and Rosa were supposed to remain in a protected apartment with Lily.

Supposed to.

Rosa had learned to hate that word.

The moment Alessandro left for New Jersey, Miguel told her about the unknown Moretti son.

Rosa listened quietly.

Then she asked one question.

"Why does Vivian want him at the wedding?"

Miguel shook his head.

"Adrian didn't know."

"What do you think?"

Miguel looked toward Lily, who sat on the floor making Hopper dance across a blanket.

"A hidden heir changes succession."

"If Alessandro dies and another son of his father appears, the organization could split."

"Unless that son supports the Duca merger."

Rosa frowned.

"You think Vivian found him."

"Maybe."

A knock sounded at the protected apartment door.

Two agents moved toward it.

Rosa stiffened.

The building had no visitors.

One agent checked the camera.

"Delivery."

"We didn't order anything."

The agent opened the outer security panel but not the door.

A small cardboard box sat in the hallway.

No delivery person.

Miguel looked at Rosa.

"Don't touch it."

The agents called a bomb team.

Before anyone arrived, Lily walked toward the door and stared through the lower glass panel.

She pointed.

Rabbit.

Rosa looked.

A small gray thread protruded from the box.

Her stomach turned.

Hopper was still in Lily's arms.

Miguel opened the box remotely using a long tool while everyone stood behind cover.

Inside was a second stuffed rabbit.

New.

Expensive.

Around its neck hung a silver tag engraved with two words.

LITTLE STAR.

Rosa stopped breathing.

Only family had used Miguel's nickname for Lily.

Miguel picked up the tag with gloved hands.

A phone was hidden beneath the toy.

It began playing a recorded video.

A man appeared.

Dark hair.

Gray-blue eyes.

Approximately thirty-seven years old.

He looked enough like Alessandro that Rosa understood immediately.

Not a double.

Family.

The man looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Matteo Vale."

"I was told yesterday that my biological father was Carlo Moretti."

Miguel stared.

Carlo had been Alessandro's father.

Matteo continued.

"Vivian Duca says Alessandro murdered the man who raised me."

Rosa's face hardened.

"Another fake video."

Matteo held up a photograph.

It showed Adrian Rusk wearing Alessandro's face beside a dead man on a warehouse floor.

"She says Alessandro killed him to keep me hidden."

The video continued.

"Vivian asked me to come to her estate this morning."

"She says she can prove who I am."

"If this message reaches anyone connected to Alessandro, I want him to know one thing."

Matteo's expression hardened.

"I am not coming for his money."

"I am coming for the truth."

The video ended.

Miguel looked at the timestamp.

It had been recorded thirty minutes earlier.

Rosa grabbed her coat.

"We have to warn Alessandro."

One agent blocked her.

"Agent Chen ordered you to remain here."

Rosa stared at him.

"Vivian is bringing a man who thinks Alessandro murdered his father into a chapel full of armed people."

"You can call Agent Chen."

Miguel already had.

No signal.

Rosa looked toward the windows.

Then at the agent's phone.

No service.

Miguel checked his.

Nothing.

The building's cellular repeater had gone dark.

The lights flickered.

One agent reached for his radio.

Static.

Rosa's face changed.

"They found us."

The first bullet struck the apartment door before anyone moved.

At the Duca estate, the officiant asked Luca Romano whether he took Vivian Duca as his lawful wife.

Luca looked into Vivian's eyes.

"I do."

The chapel doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Matteo Vale stood in the entrance.

Behind him were four Duca guards.

Vivian smiled.

"Perfect timing."

Luca's face changed.

"Who is he?"

Vivian looked at the man who shared Alessandro's eyes.

May you like

"The reason you were never going to inherit anything."
