Chapter 8 - ASHES IN QUEENS

The storage facility burned for forty-three minutes before firefighters declared the structure safe enough to approach.

By then, half the second floor had collapsed.

Rosa stood behind the police barrier in borrowed clothes with Lily asleep against her shoulder.

The fire destroyed objects in an order that felt cruelly selective.

Cheap plastic bins melted completely.

A chipped ceramic mug Miguel hated survived without a crack.

The wedding album burned along the edges but preserved one page showing Rosa laughing while Miguel struggled with his tie.

A stack of unpaid utility bills remained readable.

Lily's newborn hospital bracelet turned brown but stayed intact.

Rosa held it in her palm and stared at the tiny printed name.

LILY DELGADO.

For years, that bracelet had represented the hardest and happiest day of Rosa's life.

Now hospital records were part of the conspiracy too.

She hated that every good memory seemed to contain a door someone else had secretly used.

Alessandro stood beside the fire marshal while Marco photographed the cut padlock.

"Professional entry?"

The marshal shrugged.

"Bolt cutters."

"Anybody can buy them."

"Timing is more interesting."

He pointed toward the unit's outer frame.

"The fire started after the lock was cut."

"Whoever entered had time to remove something before ignition."

"Could be burglary followed by arson."

Alessandro looked at the collapsed roof.

"Could be evidence removal followed by insurance for the lie."

The marshal studied him.

"You say things like that often?"

"Recently."

Rosa overheard.

"The music box was not valuable."

"Not to a thief."

"To Luca?"

Alessandro nodded.

Rosa looked at Lily.

The child had crouched beside a rescued box of photographs and was separating wet pictures one at a time.

She stopped at an image of Miguel holding her as a baby.

Lily touched his face.

Then she touched her own chest.

Papa.

Rosa knelt beside her.

Yes.

Papa.

Lily pointed at the burned building.

Papa inside?

Rosa's eyes filled.

No.

She signed carefully.

Papa not there.

Lily frowned.

Where?

Rosa had spent eighteen months signing an answer that no longer felt true.

Heaven.

Gone.

With stars.

Now she did not know what to say.

She finally signed.

Looking.

We are looking for Papa.

Lily considered that and nodded.

Then she stood and began searching the ruined boxes more aggressively, as though her father might literally be underneath the photographs.

Rosa had to turn away.

Alessandro saw her face.

"You can take her back to the mansion."

"No."

"Rosa."

"She has spent her entire life having adults hide difficult things because they think not hearing means not understanding."

Rosa wiped her eyes.

"I am done hiding the shape of what is happening."

Alessandro nodded.

The answer stayed with him.

He had spent his life doing the opposite.

He hid difficult things from everyone and called the concealment leadership.

The burned storage unit made the strategy look less intelligent than it once had.

The sky above Queens had begun turning gray with morning.

Alessandro stood beside her.

He had told her to remain at the mansion.

She had refused.

"Everything I have left from Miguel is in there."

Alessandro did not argue again.

The fire marshal approached wearing a yellow helmet and tired eyes.

"Which unit?"

Rosa gave him the number.

He checked a clipboard.

"Fire started two units down."

"Accident?"

The marshal looked toward Alessandro before answering.

"Too early to say."

Rosa almost laughed.

Nothing was an accident anymore.

A firefighter brought out a blackened plastic bin recovered near the rear wall.

Its lid had melted.

Rosa knelt beside it.

Family photographs had fused together in wet clumps.

Miguel's winter coat was burned along one sleeve.

A pair of work boots had survived.

Lily's baby blanket had not.

Rosa touched the remains of it with two fingers.

Her face went blank.

Alessandro had seen that kind of expression on men who had lost brothers in front of them.

Grief became too large for the face, so the face stopped trying to carry it.

"The music box?"

Rosa searched.

Nothing.

A firefighter returned with a half-burned inventory shelf.

"Ma'am, was your unit locked with a blue padlock?"

"Yes."

He held up the severed lock.

It had been cut before the fire.

"Somebody entered first."

Alessandro looked at Marco.

"Camera footage?"

"Facility server burned."

"Off-site backup?"

"Checking."

Rosa stood slowly.

"They took it."

Lily woke in her arms.

The child saw the burned building and began signing questions.

Where box?

Where Papa?

Rosa swallowed hard.

She signed.

Gone.

Lily shook her head.

Not gone.

Rosa blinked.

What?

Lily pointed at herself.

Papa box not there.

Rosa frowned.

The child's hands moved with the absolute confidence of a memory adults had overlooked.

Papa put box with Grandma.

Rosa stared.

"My mother."

Alessandro turned.

"Where does she live?"

"She died last winter."

Rosa looked at Lily.

"But before she died, she kept some of our things in her apartment."

"What happened to the apartment?"

"My sister lives there now."

Alessandro immediately called Marco over.

"Address."

Rosa gave it.

Marco sent two men who had not been part of Luca's normal security chain.

They arrived before anyone else.

The apartment door was unlocked.

Rosa's younger sister Elena was missing.

The living room had been searched.

Drawers were open.

Mattress cushions had been cut.

The music box was gone.

Rosa pressed both hands to her face.

"They took Elena."

Alessandro examined the room.

No blood.

No signs of a prolonged struggle.

On the kitchen counter sat a fresh cup of coffee.

Still warm.

"How long since you spoke to her?"

"Yesterday morning."

"Did she know about Miguel's key?"

"No."

"Did she know about the music box?"

"Maybe."

Rosa looked toward Lily.

"My mother might have told her."

Marco entered from the bedroom.

"We found a phone."

Elena's cell lay beneath the bed.

The screen was cracked.

A draft text had been typed but never sent.

ROSA, A MAN CAME ASKING ABOUT MIGUEL.

The next words were incomplete.

HE HAS A SCAR BUT IT ISN'T THE MAN FROM THE FUNE-

Rosa read it twice.

"The funeral."

Alessandro stared at the message.

"What man from the funeral?"

Rosa looked confused.

Then she remembered.

"Someone came to Miguel's funeral."

"Describe him."

"Tall."

"Gray suit."

"Maybe forty."

"He stood at the back and left before the burial."

"You knew him?"

"No."

"Why remember him?"

Rosa's voice became quiet.

"Because he cried harder than some of Miguel's relatives."

Marco pulled up photographs from the funeral that had been stored in the cloud.

Rosa scrolled through them.

Most showed family near the closed casket.

One photograph captured the back rows of the chapel.

Rosa stopped.

"There."

A man stood near the exit.

His face was partly turned away.

Alessandro took the phone.

He knew him.

"Gabriel Russo."

Marco looked stunned.

"He died three years ago."

"Apparently not."

Gabriel had once run enforcement for Alessandro's father.

After a warehouse explosion in Newark, three bodies were recovered and identified by dental records.

Gabriel was listed among them.

Alessandro had attended the memorial.

Now a supposedly dead man had attended Miguel Delgado's funeral.

Rosa stared at Alessandro.

"How many dead people work for your family?"

He had no answer.

Marco searched old personnel records.

Gabriel had been close to Salvatore.

Very close.

Alessandro called his uncle.

Salvatore answered after one ring.

"Gabriel Russo is alive."

Silence.

Alessandro's stomach tightened.

"You knew."

"I knew he survived Newark."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"Stop saying that."

"Then stop asking questions I cannot answer."

Alessandro nearly crushed the phone in his hand.

"Gabriel was at Miguel's funeral."

Salvatore went quiet again.

"That's impossible."

"We have a photograph."

"Send it."

Alessandro did.

Several seconds passed.

Salvatore exhaled.

"That changes things."

"Explain."

"Gabriel disappeared because he discovered your father had a hidden contingency network."

Alessandro stared at the wall.

"A what?"

"Men, money, and properties that did not appear on Moretti books."

"Why?"

"Your father believed one day the organization might be compromised from inside."

Alessandro almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

His father had predicted the exact betrayal now happening.

"Gabriel managed that network."

"And you let everyone believe he died."

"Your father ordered it."

"My father has been dead twelve years."

"Gabriel stayed hidden."

Rosa watched Alessandro's face.

"Could Gabriel have Miguel?"

Salvatore heard her through the phone.

"If Gabriel attended the funeral, he knew Miguel was not in the coffin."

Rosa grabbed the phone from Alessandro.

"Then where is my husband?"

Salvatore's answer was quiet.

"Mrs. Delgado, I think Miguel may still be alive."

Rosa stopped breathing.

Lily looked up at her mother.

"Think?"

Rosa's voice cracked.

"You think?"

"Gabriel would not have attended a fake funeral unless he had reason to monitor what happened afterward."

"That doesn't mean Miguel lived."

"No."

"But it means someone important believed he might."

A noise came from the apartment hallway.

Marco raised his weapon.

The door opened.

Elena Delgado stumbled inside.

Her wrists were bruised.

Her coat was torn.

Rosa ran to her.

"Where were you?"

Elena looked at Alessandro with terror.

"They put me in a van."

"Who?"

"Two men."

"Did you see them?"

"One had a scar."

Alessandro thought of Luca.

Elena shook her head.

"Not Luca."

"I know Luca from the newspapers."

She swallowed.

"This man had a scar across his throat."

Salvatore, still on speakerphone, made a sound of recognition.

"Gabriel."

Elena looked toward the phone.

"He told the men to release me."

Rosa gripped her shoulders.

"Why?"

Elena reached into her coat.

"He gave me this for Lily."

She placed a small wooden music box on the table.

The lid was scratched but intact.

Lily immediately reached for it.

Rosa stared.

"That's Miguel's."

A folded note had been taped beneath the base.

Alessandro opened it.

Three words were written inside.

HE IS ALIVE.

Below them was an address in Brooklyn and a time.

Tonight.

May you like

Eleven thirty.
