Chapter 1 - THE CHILD WHO SAW TOO MUCH

Lily followed the ribbon of golden light beneath the kitchen door because three-year-old children understood warnings only until curiosity became stronger than fear.

She slipped into the service corridor with Hopper pressed against her chest and one bare foot landing softly in front of the other.

The mansion felt different outside the kitchen.

The floors were colder, the walls taller, and every doorway seemed to open into another world she had never been allowed to enter.

People moved past her carrying silver trays, folded napkins, flowers, bottles, and plates decorated like paintings.

No one looked down long enough to notice the little girl hiding beside the wall.

Lily could not hear the violins in the ballroom, but she felt their rhythm faintly through the marble beneath her feet.

The vibrations drew her forward.

At the end of the corridor, a tall door stood partly open.

Through the narrow gap, Lily saw the woman in the red dress.

Vivian Duca was alone for the first time that evening.

She stood beside a small service table where several opened bottles of wine had been arranged for the next round of toasts.

Her smile was gone.

Her face looked hard and impatient as she glanced over one shoulder.

Then she reached into the jeweled purse hanging from her wrist.

Lily watched a tiny dark vial appear between Vivian's fingers.

The child did not know what it was.

She only knew that Vivian looked the way adults looked when they were doing something they did not want children to see.

Vivian uncorked one bottle, poured a small amount into a crystal glass, and tipped the vial over it.

A few clear drops disappeared into the red wine.

Vivian stirred the glass once with the stem of a silver cocktail spoon.

Then Luca Romano stepped through another door.

Lily froze.

Luca's scar caught the light as he moved toward Vivian.

He did not touch her immediately.

He only stared at the glass.

Vivian lifted it between them.

Luca shook his head.

Vivian's mouth moved quickly.

Lily could not hear the words, but she could read fear in the tightness around Luca's eyes.

He reached for Vivian's wrist.

She pulled away.

Then Luca glanced toward the ballroom and said something that made Vivian's expression turn furious.

Lily stepped backward.

The heel of her bare foot bumped the base of a brass umbrella stand.

The stand shifted against the wall.

Vivian's head snapped toward the sound she had heard.

Lily did not hear it.

She saw the reaction.

She ran.

She darted behind a waiter, slipped beneath a lifted tray, and pressed herself into the shadow of a marble statue while Vivian appeared in the corridor behind her.

Vivian looked left.

Then right.

Her eyes narrowed.

Lily hugged Hopper so tightly that the rabbit's damaged ear folded beneath her chin.

A waiter crossed in front of Vivian.

By the time he passed, the child had disappeared through another door.

Lily entered the ballroom beneath a curtain of glittering light.

Rosa discovered Lily was missing at the exact moment a pastry chef asked her whether the floor beneath the dessert station was dry.

For half a second, Rosa did not understand the question because all she could see was the empty wooden crate.

Then the world narrowed to the space where her daughter should have been.

She dropped the towel in her hand.

The head housekeeper caught her arm.

"What are you doing?"

"My daughter."

Rosa pointed at the crate.

"She was right there."

The housekeeper's expression hardened with the fear of an employee who knew a small mistake could become a large scandal.

"Find her quietly."

"Quietly?"

Rosa stared at her.

"She's three."

"There are important guests in the ballroom."

Rosa pulled her arm free.

"Then they can survive seeing a mother look for her child."

She ran into the corridor.

Every open door became a threat.

Every stairwell seemed too steep.

Every polished surface reflected strangers instead of Lily.

Rosa checked beneath the service tables and behind the linen carts.

She signed Lily's name instinctively even though her daughter was nowhere near enough to see it.

At the corridor intersection, a young waiter told Rosa he had seen a barefoot little girl heading toward the ballroom.

Rosa's heart slammed against her ribs.

The ballroom was the one place Lily had been told never to enter.

It was also the one place containing Alessandro Moretti, Vivian Duca, Luca Romano, and the secret look Rosa had witnessed in the mirror.

Rosa hurried toward the main hall.

Before she entered, a man in a black security suit stepped in front of her.

"Staff entrance is the other way."

"My daughter is inside."

"Children aren't allowed in the ballroom."

"That's why I'm trying to get her out."

The guard glanced past her as if searching for permission that did not exist.

Rosa saw his eyes move to someone behind her.

She turned.

Luca stood at the end of the corridor.

His expression was pleasant.

Too pleasant.

"Problem?"

The guard straightened.

"Her child wandered into the ballroom, Mr. Romano."

Luca looked at Rosa.

For one second, the kindness left his face.

"Did she?"

Rosa remembered the mirror.

She remembered Vivian realizing she had seen them.

Then she remembered that Luca was Alessandro's most trusted man.

That fact should have comforted her.

It did not.

"She's deaf."

Rosa kept her voice steady.

"If someone calls her name, she won't turn around."

Luca stepped closer.

"I'll help you find her."

The offer sounded generous.

Rosa felt fear move through her anyway.

"Thank you, but I know where she usually hides."

She tried to pass.

Luca's hand closed around her elbow.

Not violently.

Firmly.

"Rosa."

She had never told him her first name.

Her eyes moved to his hand.

Luca released her immediately.

"The housekeeper mentioned you."

Another lie that arrived too quickly.

Rosa backed away.

"I need my daughter."

She entered the ballroom before he could stop her.

For several seconds, chandeliers blinded her after the dim service corridor.

Then she found Lily near a security guard.

Relief hit so hard Rosa nearly cried out.

Lily was pointing toward Alessandro.

Rosa followed the child's hand.

Vivian had just given him a glass of wine.

Then Rosa looked across the room.

Vivian saw her.

The smile on Vivian's face did not move.

Her eyes did.

Rosa understood instantly that whatever Lily had seen, Vivian believed mother and daughter now knew the same thing.

A hand touched Rosa's back.

She turned.

Luca stood behind her.

"Found her."

Rosa's blood went cold.

The room was enormous.

Hundreds of bodies moved around her like trees in a forest.

She saw mouths opening in laughter and hands clapping around conversations she could not hear.

She looked for Rosa.

She could not find her.

Instead, she saw the man in the black suit.

Alessandro Moretti stood near the center of the room while Vivian approached him with the crystal glass.

Lily recognized the glass immediately.

She pushed between gowns and tuxedos.

A woman almost stepped on her hand.

A man carrying champagne frowned and motioned for her to move away.

Lily kept going.

She saw Alessandro accept the wine.

Vivian touched his tie.

Lily tried to shout, even though she could not hear her own voice clearly enough to know whether anyone understood it.

No one noticed.

Alessandro lifted the glass.

Lily began to run.

A security guard intercepted her before she reached him.

He crouched and pointed toward the service corridor.

Lily twisted away.

The guard caught her gently around the waist.

She kicked and pointed desperately at Alessandro.

Alessandro turned toward the terrace with the glass still in his hand.

Lily saw Vivian watching him.

She saw Luca watching Vivian.

And she saw Rosa enter the ballroom through the opposite door.

For one second, mother and daughter found each other across three hundred strangers.

Rosa's relief vanished the moment she saw where Lily was pointing.

Then Vivian saw Rosa too.

The change in Vivian's face was tiny.

It was enough.

Rosa stopped moving.

Lily pulled free from the surprised guard and ran toward the terrace.

By the time she reached Alessandro, the wine was touching his lip.

She raised both hands.

Your beautiful fiancee put something bad in your glass.

Alessandro froze.

Lily pointed at the wine.

Poison, she signed.

The word had been taught to her after Rosa found cleaning chemicals beneath their sink and spent an entire afternoon showing her which bottles were dangerous.

Alessandro lowered the glass.

His gray-blue eyes studied the child with terrifying stillness.

Lily's hands moved again.

My mother saw them looking at each other.

She pointed through the window toward Vivian.

Now the beautiful lady knows.

Alessandro did not look back immediately.

That was the first thing that frightened Lily about him.

Most adults looked where children pointed.

Alessandro looked at the child first.

Then he looked at her bare feet.

Then at Hopper.

Then at the ballroom reflection in the terrace glass.

Only after that did he turn his eyes toward Vivian.

She was smiling at a senator's wife.

Luca stood twenty feet away.

Rosa was gone.

Alessandro's gaze returned to Lily.

He signed slowly.

Where is your mother?

Lily stared at him in surprise.

Then she pointed toward the ballroom and signed one word.

Gone.

A muscle tightened in Alessandro's jaw.

He lifted the wine again.

Lily grabbed his sleeve.

No.

Alessandro's expression did not change.

He turned his body so the ballroom could see him through the glass doors.

Then he raised the poisoned wine to his mouth and pretended to swallow.

Inside, Vivian stopped smiling.

Alessandro lowered the glass.

His fingers closed around Lily's small hand.

He pressed a button beneath his cuff.

Across the ballroom, a security man touched his earpiece.

Alessandro signed to Lily without looking down.

Stay beside me.

Lily nodded.

A moment later, Alessandro's knees buckled.

Guests screamed as the most feared man in the mansion collapsed onto the marble floor.

Vivian ran first.

Luca ran second.

And while everyone watched Alessandro Moretti fall, nobody noticed the service elevator doors closing on Rosa Delgado in the back corridor.

The last thing Rosa saw before the doors sealed was Luca's personal guard holding a cloth over her mouth.
