Chapter 7 - THE UNCLE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Salvatore Moretti entered the mansion carrying an umbrella and the expression of a man arriving late to a funeral he had expected for years.
He was sixty-seven, silver-haired, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a charcoal overcoat despite the hour.
Alessandro watched from the top of the grand staircase.
As a child, he had loved Salvatore.
After Alessandro's father died, Salvatore taught him how to read balance sheets, how to identify fear in a negotiation, and how to recognize when a man's apology was only a delay before revenge.
He had also told Alessandro that family was the last wall between a powerful man and complete isolation.
At five fourteen that morning, Alessandro wondered whether the last wall had always contained a hidden door.
Salvatore removed his coat.
"You look alive."
"Disappointed?"
Salvatore's face hardened.
"Don't insult me before coffee."
Alessandro descended the stairs.
"Vivian poisoned my wine."
Salvatore looked toward the library.
"I know."
"Luca abducted a maid."
"I know that too."
"Then coffee can wait."
They entered Alessandro's study.
Alessandro had once believed Salvatore's greatest flaw was arrogance.
As a boy, he thought arrogance meant the old man refused to admit mistakes.
As an adult, he learned Salvatore's more dangerous habit was admitting them only after the consequences belonged to someone else.
The pattern appeared in business constantly.
A captain was promoted too quickly.
A property was bought from the wrong partner.
A political favor became expensive.
Salvatore would eventually say he had misjudged the situation.
By then, Alessandro was always the person responsible for fixing it.
Now Rosa stood in the study carrying eighteen months of consequences in her face.
Salvatore watched her with a guilt Alessandro had never seen directed toward an employee.
"When Miguel came to me, he was terrified."
Rosa's eyes narrowed.
"He did not scare easily."
"I know."
"You met him once."
"Once was enough."
Salvatore looked at the letter.
"He had copied records and believed Luca was stealing."
"I told him theft was the least dangerous explanation."
Rosa folded her arms.
"That sounds useful after he disappeared."
Salvatore accepted the insult.
"I gave him a number to call if anyone approached him."
"He never called."
"Because Luca's men took his phone first."
Rosa's breath caught.
"How do you know?"
Salvatore removed an old voicemail transcript from his coat.
"A blank call reached the number at 2:13 that morning."
"No voice."
"Only construction noise and an elevator bell."
"I saved it."
Rosa stared at the paper.
"You had a piece of his last night for eighteen months."
Salvatore lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
"And you never gave it to me."
"No."
Her hands curled into fists.
Alessandro stepped between them before grief became another slap.
"Why keep it?"
Salvatore looked at him.
"Because the background sound identified the site."
"I used it to trace who entered the elevator system after midnight."
"Luca's credential appeared."
Marco leaned forward.
"That should have been enough to confront him."
"Not when his credential could be copied."
Alessandro gave a humorless smile.
"Convenient that everyone discovered cloned credentials only after mine became useful."
Salvatore's face tightened.
"I was trying to determine whether Luca had become the traitor or whether someone wanted me to believe he had."
"While you investigated, Miguel remained gone."
Rosa's voice was quiet now.
"You keep explaining the intelligence value of every delay."
"You never explain the human cost."
Salvatore looked at Lily asleep beyond the open doorway.
"Because there is no explanation that makes the cost acceptable."
That was the first answer Rosa believed from him.
It did not make her forgive him.
It only made his guilt feel real.
Marco stayed by the door.
Rosa remained with Lily in the library, but the door between rooms was open.
Alessandro wanted her close enough to hear what concerned Miguel.
Salvatore noticed.
"You trust the maid now?"
"More than several relatives."
The old man absorbed the insult.
"Fair."
Alessandro placed Miguel's letter on the desk.
Salvatore's expression changed when he saw the handwriting.
"Where did you get that?"
"Locker 214."
Salvatore sat down slowly.
"So Miguel planned better than I thought."
Rosa stepped into the doorway.
"You knew my husband?"
Salvatore looked at her.
"I met him once."
Rosa's entire body stiffened.
"When?"
"The night before he disappeared."
She crossed the room so quickly Marco reached for her arm.
Alessandro stopped him.
Rosa stood over Salvatore.
"You let me bury an empty coffin."
"I did not know it was empty."
"You knew he was in danger."
Salvatore looked older suddenly.
"Yes."
Rosa slapped him.
The sound cracked through the study.
Marco froze.
No employee had struck a Moretti relative inside that house and remained standing.
Salvatore touched his cheek.
Alessandro did not move.
Rosa's eyes filled with furious tears.
"Eighteen months."
"I put flowers on a box for eighteen months."
"My daughter kissed a stone because men like you decided information was more important than telling us whether her father was alive."
Salvatore lowered his hand.
"You are right."
That answer disarmed her more than anger would have.
"Where is he?"
Salvatore looked toward Alessandro.
"I don't know."
Rosa laughed once, bitterly.
"Of course you don't."
Alessandro placed both palms on his desk.
"Start at the beginning."
Salvatore stared at Miguel's letter.
"Eighteen months ago, Miguel contacted me through an old union representative."
"Why you?"
"Because he was afraid Luca controlled everyone near you."
Alessandro felt the accusation like a blade.
"He wasn't wrong."
Salvatore continued.
Miguel had shown him copies of shipping records and photographs from the construction site.
The material indicated Luca had been moving undeclared cargo through Moretti properties and creating financial obligations with rival families.
Salvatore claimed he did not know the full purpose.
He told Miguel to go home and wait while he approached Alessandro discreetly.
He never got the chance.
The next morning, Miguel disappeared.
By that evening, Luca reported a fatal construction accident.
Salvatore became suspicious.
"Why didn't you tell me then?"
"Because the death certificate was legitimate."
"Bought."
"I know that now."
Alessandro leaned closer.
"You recommended Vivian after that."
Salvatore nodded.
Rosa stared at him in disbelief.
"After you knew the Duca family might be involved?"
"I recommended the engagement because I wanted them close."
Alessandro's face went still.
"You used my marriage as bait."
"There was no marriage yet."
"There was going to be."
"I believed Luca wanted access to Duca resources."
Salvatore's voice remained steady.
"I thought if Vivian entered this house, I could watch who moved around her."
Alessandro's anger sharpened.
"You watched for a year while she slept under my roof."
"And you are alive."
"Because a three-year-old child walked out of a kitchen."
Salvatore had no answer to that.
Alessandro circled the desk.
"What did Luca call you about tonight?"
"He said you had discovered Miguel's archive."
"Why call you?"
Salvatore looked directly at him.
"Because Luca believes I am part of his plan."
Silence filled the study.
Marco drew his weapon.
Salvatore did not react.
Alessandro's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Are you?"
"Not the way he thinks."
"That's not an answer."
Salvatore removed a phone from his pocket and placed it on the desk.
"For eleven months, I have been giving Luca selected information."
Marco raised the weapon higher.
"Boss."
Alessandro ignored him.
"You have been spying for Luca."
"I have been lying to Luca."
"Using my secrets."
"Using information I believed would not harm you."
Alessandro picked up the phone.
The message history showed coded exchanges with Luca.
Meeting times.
Vehicle movements.
Banking schedules.
One message from three weeks earlier made Alessandro stop.
THE WEDDING REMAINS ON SCHEDULE.
Luca's reply read.
AFTER THE VOWS, THE OLD STRUCTURE ENDS.
Alessandro looked at Salvatore.
"What was supposed to happen after the vows?"
"I never learned."
"Vivian tried to kill me before the wedding."
"Which means the plan changed."
Rosa folded her arms.
"Because I saw them."
Salvatore looked at her.
"Possibly."
Alessandro shook his head.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
"If Vivian only wanted to silence Rosa, she would have targeted Rosa."
He thought back to the ballroom.
The wine.
Vivian watching him swallow.
Luca across the room.
"Something forced them to kill me tonight."
Marco looked toward Miguel's flash drive.
"Maybe they learned the locker still existed."
Salvatore's face changed.
"How would they know?"
Rosa answered.
"Hopper."
She looked at the gray rabbit in Lily's hands.
"Someone opened the toy."
Alessandro stared at her.
"When?"
Rosa swallowed.
"I don't know."
She thought.
"Two weeks ago Lily lost Hopper for an afternoon at the mansion."
"Where was it found?"
"In the laundry room."
Marco cursed.
Someone had searched the rabbit, discovered the key, then put it back because removing it would alert Rosa.
They did not know whether Rosa understood what the key opened.
They watched her instead.
At the party, Rosa saw Vivian and Luca together.
Now she had two dangerous pieces of information.
That may have accelerated everything.
Salvatore looked toward the child.
"Luca is going to come for that key again."
"He can have it."
Alessandro placed the brass key on the desk.
"The locker is empty."
"Then he'll come for what was inside."
Marco glanced toward the flash drive.
Salvatore shook his head.
"No."
"Miguel was an electrician, not an intelligence officer."
"If he created one copy, he created two."
Rosa stared at him.
"Miguel always backed up family photographs twice."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Where?"
Rosa's face drained of color.
"Our old apartment."
"You still have it?"
"The lease ended after he disappeared."
"Where did your belongings go?"
"Storage."
Lily suddenly stood.
She walked to Rosa and tugged her sleeve.
Her hands moved.
Papa box.
Rosa frowned.
What box?
Lily touched Hopper and then mimed turning a small crank.
Rosa went completely still.
"The music box."
Alessandro waited.
"Miguel gave Lily a wooden music box when she was born."
Rosa's voice sped up.
"She couldn't hear it, but she liked feeling the vibration when it played."
"Where is it?"
"Storage unit in Queens."
Marco was already reaching for his phone.
Salvatore stood.
"Do not send your normal team."
Alessandro looked at him.
"Why?"
Salvatore turned his phone screen around.
A new message from Luca had arrived less than one minute earlier.
DOES HE KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC BOX YET?
Rosa stared at the message.
Then her own phone began ringing.
The number was unknown.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke before she could say hello.
"Mrs. Delgado, this is Queens Secure Storage."
May you like
"There has been a fire in your unit."
