Chapter 2 - THE GLASS THAT SHOULD HAVE KILLED HIM

Alessandro hit the floor hard enough to convince three hundred witnesses that death had arrived in the middle of his engagement party.
His shoulder struck first.
The crystal glass rolled from his hand and shattered beneath the edge of a table.
Wine spread across the black marble like blood.
Vivian dropped to her knees beside him.
Her hands trembled exactly the right amount.
"Alessandro."
She touched his face.
"Look at me."
Luca shoved through the crowd with panic written across his features.
"Call an ambulance."
Alessandro kept his eyes closed.
He had spent fifteen years learning how betrayal sounded before it became visible.
Vivian's breathing was fast.
Luca's was controlled.
One of them sounded afraid of losing him.
The other sounded afraid of what might happen if he lived.
A doctor who had attended the party rushed forward.
He reached for Alessandro's neck.
Before his fingers touched skin, Alessandro opened his eyes.
Only four people saw it.
The doctor.
Luca.
Vivian.
And Lily.
Alessandro's stare met the doctor's.
The doctor stopped.
Years earlier, Dr. Samuel Bennett had treated gunshot wounds that never entered hospital records.
He knew when Alessandro was asking for silence.
He placed two fingers against Alessandro's throat and announced that there was a pulse.
"Give him space."
Security began forcing guests back.
Lily stood near the terrace doors clutching Hopper.
She was crying without making the sound the room expected from a frightened child.
Vivian noticed her.
For a fraction of a second, her face emptied.
Then concern returned.
"Whose child is that?"
Lily saw Vivian's mouth move.
She saw her point.
The child stepped backward.
Alessandro sat up suddenly.
A wave of shocked voices swept through the ballroom.
Vivian stared at him.
"You should stay down."
"I'm fine."
The same two words he had given her before drinking.
This time, Vivian looked less comforted by them.
Alessandro rose with Bennett's help.
"Food allergy."
The doctor delivered the lie smoothly.
"I want him examined privately."
Alessandro looked toward his security chief.
"Close the gates."
The entire ballroom fell quiet.
Several guests exchanged uneasy looks.
Vivian stood.
"Why?"
Alessandro brushed a speck of glass from his sleeve.
"Because someone has misplaced a child."
His gaze moved to Lily.
Then to the service corridors.
"Nobody leaves until her mother is found."
Luca's face did not move.
Only his left thumb rubbed once across the edge of his champagne glass.
Alessandro noticed.
He had seen Luca make that gesture before executions, ambushes, and meetings where someone would not be allowed to walk out.
Vivian approached Lily.
"Sweetheart, are you lost?"
Lily moved behind Alessandro.
Vivian stopped.
The room noticed that too.
Alessandro crouched so Lily could see his face.
He signed.
What is your name?
Lily.
Your mother's name?
Rosa.
Rosa Delgado.
Alessandro's eyes sharpened at the surname.
He had heard Delgado before.
He could not remember where.
He stood and looked toward the head housekeeper.
"Find Rosa Delgado."
The woman went pale.
"Mr. Moretti, she was working the east service wing ten minutes ago."
"Then ten minutes should be enough to find her."
Alessandro handed Lily to Bennett.
The child resisted until Alessandro signed again.
Safe.
That word changed her expression.
She allowed Bennett to take her hand.
Alessandro walked toward his private study.
Luca followed automatically.
"Not you."
The words stopped Luca in front of everyone.
Silence spread outward.
For fifteen years, Alessandro and Luca had entered every important room together.
Vivian stared at Alessandro.
Luca forced a small smile.
"You think I poisoned you?"
Alessandro turned.
"I said I wanted to be alone."
"You collapsed in front of three hundred people."
"And somehow you made that about yourself."
Luca's smile vanished.
Alessandro entered the study and locked the door.
Bennett was already inside through the connecting corridor.
Bennett did not begin with the wine.
He began with Alessandro's mouth, pulse, pupils, breathing, and the few seconds between the first sip and Lily's warning.
"Did you swallow?"
"A fraction."
"How much is a fraction?"
"Enough to taste it."
"That's not a measurement."
Alessandro looked at him.
"Then choose the smallest amount that still makes you worried."
Bennett did not smile.
He knew Alessandro's habit of turning uncertainty into control by making everyone else speak more precisely.
"I am worried."
That answer changed the room.
Bennett checked his heart rhythm with a portable device from his medical case.
The reading was normal for the moment.
"Some substances act fast."
"Some don't."
"You do not leave my sight until we know which one this is."
Alessandro looked toward the locked door where Vivian continued knocking.
"I may need to."
"Then collapse for real next time."
Lily watched both men.
She could not hear the argument, but she saw Bennett's irritation and Alessandro's refusal to appear concerned.
She slid off the chair and walked to Alessandro.
Her small fingers touched his wrist.
She felt the pulse beneath his skin.
Rosa had taught her to do that with sleepy pets and with Mama after bad dreams.
Alessandro looked down.
Lily frowned at him as if the heartbeat personally offended her by being difficult.
Then she signed.
Still here.
Alessandro stared at her.
Bennett asked what she had said.
"She said I'm still here."
"Smart kid."
Alessandro looked at the door again.
"Smarter than the room."
Outside, Vivian had stopped knocking.
She stood in the corridor with Luca thirty feet away.
Neither dared approach the other because cameras covered the hall.
Vivian lifted her phone as though checking messages.
Luca did the same.
A message appeared on his screen.
HE DRANK.
Luca typed back.
HE STOOD UP.
Vivian replied.
NOT ENOUGH TIME.
Luca stared at the words.
YOU CHANGED THE DOSE.
Vivian's jaw tightened.
She typed with one thumb.
MIGUEL MOVED.
WE COULD NOT WAIT.
Luca looked toward the study door.
Then toward the ballroom where guests were being contained by security.
For the first time that night, anger replaced calculation.
He typed.
YOU WERE TOLD AFTER THE WEDDING.
Vivian did not answer.
A staff member rounded the corner.
Both phones disappeared.
Inside the study, Marco began listing every person who could have touched the glass after Vivian poured it.
Alessandro stopped him.
"Wrong question."
Marco frowned.
"What is the right one?"
"Who expected me to die in public?"
Bennett looked up.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because private murder hides the killer."
Alessandro's eyes went to the ballroom cameras on the monitor.
"Public death creates a story."
"Someone wanted three hundred witnesses to remember Vivian placing a drink in my hand and still believe she was innocent."
Marco understood.
"So the visible act was meant to look harmless."
"Exactly."
Lily tugged Alessandro's sleeve again.
She pointed at Luca's face in a paused security image.
Then she touched the scar on her own cheek.
Bad man looked scared.
Alessandro turned toward her.
When?
Lily pointed at the glass.
When red lady put bad thing.
That detail unsettled him more than anything else.
If Luca had planned the poisoning, why had he looked frightened when Vivian did it?
The conspiracy already contained a disagreement.
Alessandro intended to find the crack and widen it until everything broke.
Lily sat in a leather chair with Hopper in her lap.
On the desk rested a sealed evidence bag containing several shards of the broken wine glass.
Bennett looked at Alessandro.
"You swallowed any of it?"
"I touched the first sip to my mouth before she warned me."
Bennett's face tightened.
"Rinse now."
He handed Alessandro water and began checking his pulse.
"Whatever was in that glass may have been designed to look like a natural medical event."
"Can you identify it?"
"Not here."
"Then get it somewhere you can."
Bennett sealed the evidence bag inside a small medical case.
Alessandro turned to Lily.
"Show me exactly what you saw."
Lily's signing was clumsy because she was three.
She repeated the woman in red.
The little bottle.
Drops in wine.
The scar man entering afterward.
Alessandro stopped her.
Scar man?
Lily touched her own left cheek.
Alessandro felt something cold open inside his chest.
Luca.
He signed the name.
Lily nodded.
Bennett watched Alessandro's face.
"You believe her?"
"Children lie about cookies."
Alessandro looked at the child.
"They don't invent mirrors, vials, and scars."
A knock came at the door.
Alessandro did not answer.
The knock came again.
"Boss."
It was security chief Marco Bellini.
"We have a problem."
Alessandro opened the door only far enough for Marco to enter.
Marco carried a tablet.
His face looked wrong.
"Rosa Delgado isn't in the mansion."
Alessandro stared at him.
"The gates are closed."
"She didn't use a gate."
Marco placed the tablet on the desk.
A camera image showed the lower service corridor.
Rosa walked into frame carrying a folded tablecloth.
Three seconds later, the image froze.
Then it jumped ahead seven minutes.
The corridor was empty.
"Seven minutes are missing."
"From one camera?"
"Nine cameras."
Alessandro looked toward the door.
"Who can erase nine feeds?"
Marco did not answer immediately.
He did not have to.
Only three people had that authority.
Alessandro.
Marco.
And Luca.
A second knock interrupted them.
This time Vivian's voice came through the door.
"Alessandro, please let me in."
Lily slid down from the chair.
She moved toward the desk and pointed at Marco's tablet.
Then she signed quickly.
Mama had rabbit.
Alessandro frowned.
Hopper is here.
Lily shook her head.
She pointed at the screen again.
Mama had rabbit.
Marco rewound the footage.
Rosa entered the corridor.
The folded white tablecloth was tucked beneath one arm.
Something gray protruded from it.
A torn fabric ear.
Lily looked down at the rabbit in her own arms.
Then she turned it over.
A fresh cut had been made along Hopper's back seam.
Someone had opened the stuffed animal and sewn it closed again.
Alessandro took Hopper carefully.
Inside the rabbit, beneath old cotton stuffing, his fingers found something hard.
He pulled out a tiny brass key.
Taped around it was a strip of paper with two words written in Rosa's handwriting.
