## CHAPTER 7: THE FATHER OF THE BRIDE

---

Dr. Adrian Vale had sat in the front row of the chapel waiting to watch his daughter marry Lucas.

He had shaken Lucas’s hand that morning.

He had smiled at Lily.

He had raised a champagne glass and called the wedding a union of two honorable families.

Now evidence linked him to the secret facility where Claire had been held alive.

Lucas drove to Vale Medical Center with Detective Torres and federal agents shortly after sunrise.

The hospital occupied three glass towers overlooking the river. Adrian had built an international reputation as a neurological specialist. His research focused on traumatic memory loss and identity disorders.

Lucas suddenly understood why Eleanor might have needed him.

A private security team blocked the entrance.

Torres displayed a warrant.

The guards stepped aside.

Adrian was not in his office.

His assistant claimed he had left the wedding shortly after the chaos began and had not returned.

Agents searched the building.

Lucas stood inside Adrian’s private office, staring at framed photographs.

One showed Adrian with Vanessa at her medical school graduation.

Another showed him receiving an award beside Eleanor Bennett.

A third showed Adrian, Victor Shaw, and Thomas Bennett at a charity event fifteen years earlier.

They had all known one another.

Torres opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a set of patient files labeled only with numbers.

File Nine contained photographs of Claire.

Lucas sat down.

The first image had been taken after the crash.

Claire lay unconscious with bandages covering half her face.

The report described brain swelling, multiple fractures, and chemically induced sedation.

The second report was dated six weeks later.

Patient displays signs of autobiographical memory recovery. Continue suppression protocol.

Lucas read the sentence again.

“They intentionally prevented her from remembering.”

Torres nodded grimly.

The next page included Adrian’s signature.

A later report stated:

Patient remains emotionally attached to identifiers “Lucas” and “Lily.” Recommend relocation to isolate maternal triggers.

Lucas closed the file.

“I’m going to kill him.”

Torres faced him.

“No, you’re going to help me put him in prison.”

“He kept my wife drugged for years.”

“And Claire needs you free, not serving a life sentence.”

The office phone rang.

Lucas answered.

Adrian Vale spoke calmly.

“I wondered how long it would take you to reach my office.”

“Where is Claire?”

“That is a complicated question.”

“It has a simple answer.”

“Claire is alive.”

Lucas gripped the phone.

Lily’s hope had been justified.

“Where?”

“I will tell you, but first you must protect Vanessa.”

“She tried to steal my daughter.”

“Vanessa was manipulated from the beginning.”

“She forged my signature.”

“Under Eleanor’s direction.”

“She still made the choice.”

“Yes,” Adrian said. “And she will answer for it. But if she dies, you may never find Claire.”

Lucas looked toward Torres.

She signaled for the trace to continue.

“What does Vanessa know?”

“She knows the current location.”

“She was unconscious when I left the hospital.”

“She woke up twelve minutes ago.”

Lucas’s pulse accelerated.

“Why hasn’t anyone told me?”

“Because the nurse outside her room works for Victor Shaw.”

Torres immediately contacted the hospital security team.

Adrian continued.

“If Shaw reaches her first, she will not survive.”

“Why are you helping me?”

“Because Eleanor has decided my family is expendable.”

“You helped her destroy mine.”

“I saved Claire’s life.”

“You erased her identity.”

“I followed orders to protect Vanessa.”

Lucas laughed without humor.

“Your daughter agreed to kidnap a child for money.”

“Vanessa believed she was preventing a corporate war that would destroy thousands of employees.”

“She believed she would become rich.”

“Both things can be true.”

Torres signaled that the call was coming from inside Vale Medical Center.

Lucas lowered his voice.

“You’re in the building.”

Adrian hung up.

Agents sealed the exits.

A team searched the underground floors.

Lucas and Torres followed a private elevator behind Adrian’s office. It required a biometric scan, but the agents bypassed the lock.

The elevator descended below the parking garage.

The doors opened into a laboratory.

Rows of locked cabinets lined the walls. Medical chairs stood beneath surgical lights. The room smelled of antiseptic.

Adrian waited beside a computer terminal.

He raised both hands.

“I am unarmed.”

Torres aimed her weapon.

“Get on the floor.”

“I will cooperate after Lucas hears me.”

Lucas approached.

“Start talking.”

Adrian looked older than he had at the wedding. His silver hair was disordered, and his eyes were bloodshot.

“Claire survived because I operated on her for fourteen hours.”

“Then you imprisoned her.”

“Eleanor told me Claire had stolen classified financial information and intended to destroy Bennett Global. She said thousands of pensions and jobs would disappear.”

“And that justified stealing her life?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Adrian looked away.

“Vanessa was involved with Ethan.”

Lucas stared at him.

“What?”

“Six years ago, Ethan and Vanessa caused a boating accident while intoxicated. A young man died. Victor Shaw removed the evidence.”

Lucas remembered Ethan abruptly entering rehabilitation that summer.

“Eleanor threatened to expose Vanessa unless you helped her,” Lucas said.

Adrian nodded.

“At first, Claire’s sedation was medically necessary. Later, Eleanor ordered me to continue it.”

“Where was Claire moved?”

“Haven Nine.”

“What does that mean?”

“It refers to the ninth subject in an identity relocation program.”

“You created new identities?”

“For individuals the Bennett organization needed to disappear.”

Torres’s expression hardened.

“How many?”

“Twenty-three over twelve years.”

“Where is Claire?”

Adrian entered a code into the computer.

A map appeared.

A location in coastal Maine flashed on screen.

“She is living under the name Sarah Collins in a small town called Bellweather.”

Lucas stared at the map.

“She’s free?”

“Physically.”

“What does that mean?”

“Her long-term memory was severely damaged by the crash and the medication. We constructed a new history for her.”

Lucas’s stomach turned.

“You convinced her she was someone else.”

“She believes she lost her husband and child in a house fire.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“You made my wife grieve a family that never existed while her real daughter cried for her every night.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Torres handcuffed him.

Adrian did not resist.

“Victor Shaw knows Claire’s location,” he said.

“How?”

“Eleanor accessed the file yesterday.”

Lucas looked at the map.

“She’s going after Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because Claire recently began remembering Lily.”

Lucas moved toward the elevator.

Adrian called after him.

“Lucas.”

He turned.

“You cannot simply walk into Claire’s life and expect her to remember you.”

“I don’t care whether she remembers me.”

“That is not true.”

Lucas said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“If you push too hard, her mind may reject everything. She could disappear again voluntarily.”

Torres escorted Adrian into the elevator.

Lucas’s phone rang.

Rachel was calling from the hospital.

“Vanessa is awake,” she said. “But someone tried to enter her room dressed as a nurse.”

“Is she safe?”

“For now.”

“Put her on.”

Vanessa’s voice came through moments later.

“Lucas.”

“Where is Claire?”

“My father told you?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen carefully. Eleanor isn’t the only person going to Bellweather.”

“Who else?”

“Ethan.”

“He’s in surgery.”

“No. The man you brought to the hospital was not Ethan.”

Lucas went still.

“I watched paramedics take him.”

“Ethan has used body doubles for years when traveling. Victor arranged it.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Check the scar on his right shoulder. The real Ethan has one from the boating accident.”

Lucas looked toward Torres.

She immediately called the hospital.

After a tense conversation, she lowered her phone.

“The patient has no scar.”

Vanessa began crying.

“Ethan planned the wedding conspiracy with Eleanor, but he never intended to give her control. He wants Claire.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire knows he caused the boating death.”

“That happened six years ago.”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“The victim wasn’t a stranger.”

Lucas waited.

Vanessa whispered, “He was Caroline Mercer’s son.”

A new message appeared on Lucas’s phone.

It came from Ethan.

A photograph showed a blond woman walking along a rocky beach.

Claire.

She was alive.

ETHAN:

May you like

You took her from me once.

This time, I’m taking her from you.
