## CHAPTER 16: ROOM ZERO

Northstar Recovery Center stood among the mountains like a forgotten prison.
Officially, the facility had closed six months earlier. Its windows were boarded, and snow covered the long entrance road.
But thermal surveillance showed movement underground.
Lucas, Claire, Caroline, and Detective Torres arrived with a federal tactical team shortly before dawn.
Eleanor remained in custody.
Victor Shaw had begun cooperating after learning Malcolm planned to blame him for every murder.
Shaw provided the building plans.
“There are nine patient wings,” he said through a secure video connection. “Room Zero is below the surgical level.”
“What is inside?” Torres asked.
“Original recordings.”
“Of patients?”
“Of everyone. Eleanor, Thomas, Malcolm, Adrian. Northstar documented every procedure for leverage.”
Claire stared at the dark facility.
“And Ethan?”
“Malcolm needs his biometric access. Ethan was registered as an executive controller.”
The tactical team entered through the east wing.
Claire insisted on joining Lucas.
“You should remain outside,” he said.
“I spent years being told where I was allowed to go.”
“This is not about controlling you.”
“I know. But I remember the lower floor. I can guide them.”
Lucas wanted to argue.
Instead, he handed her a protective vest.
They descended through corridors lined with empty patient rooms.
Claire’s breathing grew uneven.
She touched the walls as memories returned.
“This is where they brought me after surgery.”
Lucas stayed beside her.
“You can turn back.”
“No.”
They reached a room with faded yellow paint.
Claire stopped.
“I drew Lily’s name here.”
Beneath peeling paint, someone had scratched four letters:
LILY.
Lucas touched the marks.
“You remembered her.”
“I never completely forgot.”
At the surgical level, they found two guards unconscious.
Ethan had apparently fought them despite his injuries.
Blood drops led toward a secured elevator.
Caroline looked at the trail.
“He is losing too much blood.”
They followed.
The elevator opened beneath the facility.
Room Zero resembled a recording archive rather than a medical chamber. Thousands of drives and tapes filled climate-controlled shelves.
Malcolm stood beside a central computer.
Ethan sat on the floor, one hand pressed against his reopened wound.
A gun rested against his temple.
Malcolm smiled when Lucas entered.
“The family reunion continues.”
Torres raised her weapon.
“Release him.”
“If I remove my finger, this room burns.”
Malcolm held a small trigger.
Explosive charges lined the shelves.
Caroline looked toward Ethan.
“You said Room Zero could not be opened.”
Ethan’s voice was weak.
“It should have remained buried.”
Malcolm activated a screen.
Thomas appeared in an old recording.
He sat beside Eleanor and Victor Shaw.
Thomas said, “The Mercer records must disappear before Daniel reaches the press.”
Another recording showed Adrian discussing memory suppression.
A third showed Malcolm giving orders after Claire’s crash.
“We need her alive until we locate the trust evidence,” he said.
Claire watched herself being discussed like an object.
Malcolm turned toward her.
“You see? No one is innocent.”
“No,” Claire said. “But some people are willing to become accountable.”
Malcolm laughed.
“Accountability is a story powerful people tell when they lose.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
“A helicopter and legal immunity.”
“You know that is impossible.”
“Then everyone dies with the evidence.”
Ethan looked at Lucas.
“Do not give him anything.”
Malcolm struck him with the gun.
Caroline moved forward.
“He is your son.”
Malcolm’s face remained cold.
“He is Daniel Mercer’s son.”
“You raised him.”
“I invested in him.”
Ethan laughed painfully.
“That is the closest he has ever come to saying he cared.”
Malcolm glanced down.
That small distraction was enough.
Claire reached toward the emergency suppression panel beside the door.
Malcolm saw her movement and fired.
Lucas pulled her aside.
The bullet struck the panel.
Fireproof doors slammed shut between the archive sections.
A chemical suppression system activated.
White vapor filled the room.
Torres fired at Malcolm’s shoulder.
He dropped the trigger.
Ethan kicked it beneath a shelf.
Caroline rushed toward him.
Lucas tackled Malcolm.
They fought beside the central console.
Malcolm grabbed a metal bar and struck Lucas across the ribs.
Claire recovered the gun.
“Stop.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“You won’t shoot.”
“You spent three years teaching me to doubt myself.”
Her hand steadied.
“I don’t doubt this.”
Malcolm lunged.
Claire fired into the floor beside his foot.
He stopped.
Agents restrained him.
Caroline knelt beside Ethan.
His skin was gray.
“Stay awake.”
Ethan smiled faintly.
“I always wondered what having a sister would feel like.”
“Annoying,” Caroline said, pressing cloth against his wound. “Stay alive and find out.”
Torres secured the explosives.
Technicians began copying the Room Zero archive.
Malcolm sat handcuffed against the wall.
“You think these recordings will create justice?” he said. “They will create panic. Governments will fall. Families will destroy one another.”
Claire looked at the endless shelves.
“Truth does not create the damage. It reveals who created it.”
Ethan was transported to emergency surgery.
This time, federal agents verified his identity.
The Room Zero records resulted in dozens of arrests within hours.
Judges resigned.
Executives were suspended.
Several missing people were located under false identities.
Families learned that loved ones believed dead had been confined or relocated.
Among the records was a file marked CLAIRE BENNETT—FINAL DISPOSITION.
Lucas opened it with Claire.
The last entry had been recorded eight months earlier.
Patient has recovered significant autobiographical memory.
Transfer no longer sustainable.
Recommendation: permanent termination.
Signed: Eleanor Bennett.
Claire sat motionless.
Lucas stared at the signature.
Eleanor had ordered her death after visiting her for years.
Yet Claire had somehow been moved to Bellweather instead.
“Who stopped the order?” Lucas asked.
The file contained a second authorization.
TERMINATION DENIED. SUBJECT RELOCATED.
Signed: Vanessa Hart.
Claire looked at him.
“Vanessa saved me.”
Lucas felt conflicting emotions.
Vanessa had participated in the plot against Lily.
But months earlier, she had prevented Claire’s murder.
A video file explained why.
Vanessa sat in Adrian’s office.
“I will help Eleanor with the marriage,” she said, “but Claire stays alive.”
Adrian responded, “If Eleanor discovers this—”
“She won’t.”
“Why do you care?”
Vanessa looked toward the camera without realizing it was recording.
“Because Lucas deserves the truth, even if I am too selfish to give it to him yet.”
Claire watched silently.
“She loved you.”
Lucas shook his head.
“She loved what she wanted from me.”
“People can feel love and still do terrible things.”
The Room Zero search continued.
An agent approached Torres with another file.
It was labeled LILY BENNETT—CONTINGENCY.
Lucas opened it.
The document had been created six months earlier.
It contained school schedules, medical information, security patterns, and photographs taken through windows of their home.
Someone had been planning Lily’s abduction long before the wedding.
The authorization signature did not belong to Eleanor, Malcolm, Ethan, or Vanessa.
It belonged to Thomas Bennett.
Lucas stared at his father’s name.

A final instruction appeared at the bottom:
IF CLAIRE REGAINS MEMORY, REMOVE LILY FIRST.
