## CHAPTER 17: THE LAST LIE OF THOMAS BENNETT

Thomas requested to speak with Lucas immediately.

He had learned that Room Zero was secure and Malcolm was in custody.

Lucas arrived at the federal detention center carrying the contingency file.

Claire came with him.

Thomas looked through the glass and saw her.

“I am glad you survived.”

Claire sat across from him.

“You knew I survived.”

“I knew Adrian kept you alive.”

“You also signed an order to abduct Lily.”

Thomas’s face changed.

Lucas placed the file against the glass.

“Explain.”

Thomas read the signature.

“It is not what you think.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“Every member of this family has said those words.”

“The plan was to move Lily somewhere safe if Claire regained her memory.”

“Safe from whom?”

“Eleanor.”

“You wrote ‘remove Lily first.’”

“Because I knew Eleanor would use her as leverage.”

“You had people photographing my daughter.”

“I needed to know when she was vulnerable.”

“You could have warned me.”

“Your home was monitored.”

“You could have gone to the police.”

“The police commissioner used Northstar.”

Claire leaned toward the phone.

“Why didn’t you come for me?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Because Eleanor believed I was dead. If I exposed myself, she would have killed you immediately.”

“So you watched me lose my identity.”

“I tried to protect you through Adrian.”

“Adrian drugged me.”

“I did not know how far the protocol had gone.”

Lucas slammed his palm against the counter.

“Again, you did not know.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I became good at surviving by refusing to see the cost.”

Claire studied him.

“Who moved me to Bellweather?”

“I did.”

“Through Vanessa?”

“Yes. She found me two years ago while searching Adrian’s files. I convinced her to stop the termination order.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You recruited Vanessa.”

“I asked her to keep Claire alive.”

“You also encouraged her relationship with me?”

“No.”

“Did you know Eleanor was using her?”

“I suspected.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“I believed Vanessa would eventually tell you.”

“She nearly became Lily’s legal guardian.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

The pattern was clear.

He never directly committed the final betrayal.

He simply created the conditions and waited for someone else to act.

Claire asked, “Where is the original contingency team?”

“Disbanded.”

“Are you certain?”

Thomas hesitated.

Lucas noticed.

“Who still has access?”

“A man named Samuel Price.”

“Related to Dr. Evelyn Price?”

“Her husband.”

Dr. Price had called Lucas before apparently being discovered by Shaw.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

Torres entered the room and spoke through the secondary phone.

“We found Dr. Evelyn Price.”

“Alive?” Lucas asked.

“Yes. She was hiding in a rural motel. The noise during the call was her breaking a window to escape.”

Lucas exhaled.

“She says Samuel Price created Haven Nine’s identity relocation system. He disappeared three months ago.”

Thomas looked alarmed.

“That is when he copied the contingency files.”

“What does he want?” Claire asked.

Thomas answered, “Revenge.”

“For what?”

“His daughter was a Northstar patient.”

Torres opened a file.

“Her name was Natalie Price. She died during an experimental memory procedure.”

“Who authorized it?” Lucas asked.

Thomas did not answer.

Claire looked at him.

“You.”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I approved the research funding.”

“You killed another person through a signature.”

“I know.”

Lucas stood.

“We are done.”

Thomas pressed one hand against the glass.

“Samuel will not stop because Malcolm is arrested. He blames every Bennett.”

“My daughter is seven.”

“Pain does not always respect innocence.”

Lucas turned away.

His phone rang.

Rachel.

“Lucas, Lily is missing.”

He stopped.

“Not again.”

“She was in the secure residence. Claire’s federal escort brought her back from a medical checkup, but the driver wasn’t an agent.”

Torres immediately contacted the protection team.

The real driver had been found unconscious.

Security footage showed Lily entering a government vehicle willingly because the driver wore official identification.

Samuel Price had activated Thomas’s old contingency plan.

A message arrived.

SAMUEL PRICE:

You found your wife because Northstar failed.

My daughter died because Northstar succeeded.

Lucas typed a response.

Where is Lily?

Samuel sent an address.

An abandoned children’s hospital outside the city.

Then another message appeared.

SAMUEL PRICE:

Bring Thomas Bennett.

Claire read the message.

“He wants Thomas.”

Lucas looked through the glass at his father.

“For once, you are going to face the consequences yourself.”

Thomas nodded.

“I will go.”

Torres arranged a controlled transport.

Thomas wore a concealed tracking device.

Lucas and Claire traveled in a second vehicle.

The abandoned hospital had once housed pediatric research funded by Bennett Global.

Samuel waited inside the former playroom.

Lily sat at a small table drawing with crayons.

She appeared unharmed.

A man in his forties stood behind her.

He wore a doctor’s coat.

Thomas entered first.

“I am here.”

Samuel looked at him.

“My daughter trusted you.”

“I never met Natalie.”

“You approved the procedure.”

“I approved funding. I did not know the patient names.”

Samuel laughed.

“That is how wealthy men murder people without losing sleep.”

Lily looked toward Thomas.

“Grandpa, is Daddy here?”

Thomas answered carefully.

“He is close.”

Samuel held a syringe.

Lucas watched through a hidden camera from the next room.

Claire gripped his arm.

“What is in it?”

Torres whispered, “Unknown.”

Samuel approached Thomas.

“My daughter forgot my face before she died. She looked at me and asked whether I was the janitor.”

Thomas’s voice shook.

“I am sorry.”

“I don’t want your apology.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to understand.”

Samuel lifted the syringe.

“I want you to lose everything inside your mind that ever made you Thomas Bennett.”

Lily stood.

“That’s wrong.”

Samuel looked at her.

“He hurt my daughter.”

“Hurt doesn’t become good because you give it back.”

Samuel stared at Lily.

The child continued.

“My grandma hurt people because she said they hurt her. Everybody kept doing bad things because somebody else did bad things first.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Lily had understood the entire Bennett legacy better than the adults.

Thomas looked at Samuel.

“She is right.”

“You don’t get to agree with her.”

“No. But I can choose what happens next.”

Thomas seized Samuel’s wrist.

The syringe fell.

Lucas and agents entered.

Samuel grabbed Lily and pulled a knife.

Thomas stepped between them.

The knife struck Thomas beneath the ribs.

Lucas tackled Samuel.

Agents restrained him.

Claire rushed to Lily.

Thomas collapsed.

Lucas knelt beside his father.

Blood spread across Thomas’s shirt.

Paramedics entered.

Thomas looked at Lucas.

“I am sorry I made you inherit my sins.”

“You should have told the truth.”

“Yes.”

“You should have stayed.”

“Yes.”

Lucas pressed his hands against the wound.

Thomas smiled weakly.

“You became a better man without me.”

“Do not turn dying into another escape.”

Thomas’s smile faded.

“Then make me stay.”

Paramedics transported him to surgery.

Samuel Price was arrested.

Lily clung to Claire.

“Is Grandpa going to die?”

Claire looked at Lucas.

“We don’t know.”

At the hospital, doctors managed to stabilize Thomas.

He would survive to stand trial.

Lucas felt relief and anger at the same time.

Thomas would not escape accountability through death.

Later that night, Claire sat beside Lucas in the waiting room.

“Lily remembered something I forgot,” she said.

“What?”

“That ending pain requires someone to stop passing it forward.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Can we?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire placed her hand over his.

“But I want to try.”

A nurse approached.

“Mr. Bennett, Vanessa Hart has requested to speak with both of you.”

Vanessa remained under guard in another wing.

Lucas and Claire entered her room.

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“I owe you your life.”

Claire replied, “You also tried to take mine.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

She handed Lucas a sealed document.

“This is my full confession. Every message. Every meeting. Every person involved.”

“Why now?”

“Because the wedding was never the beginning of the plan.”

“What was?”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“Your accident.”

Then she looked at Lucas.

“And the person who first ordered Claire’s death was not Eleanor.”

Lucas waited.

May you like

Vanessa whispered, “It was me.”
