## CHAPTER 6: THE WOMAN WITHOUT A GRAVE

Ethan survived the gunshot.
The bullet missed his heart but damaged his lung. Paramedics transported him to a guarded hospital room before dawn.
Lucas sat outside the operating theater with Claire’s unopened envelope in his hands.
Lily slept against Rachel’s shoulder at the opposite end of the waiting room.
Detective Torres stood near the window, speaking quietly with federal agents. The attack at Lake Marlow had transformed the case from a family conspiracy into a major criminal investigation.
Victor Shaw and Eleanor were missing.
The steel box containing Claire’s evidence was gone.
Caroline Mercer had been placed in protective custody.
Vanessa remained unconscious after surgery.
Lucas stared at the envelope.
He had carried it from the lake but could not force himself to open it.
Rachel approached.
“You need to read it.”
“What if Ethan is lying?”
“Then the letter may prove it.”
“What if he isn’t?”
Rachel sat beside him.
“Then Claire may have survived the crash.”
Lucas looked toward Lily.
“For how long?”
Rachel had no answer.
He opened the envelope.
Inside were four handwritten pages.
Lucas,
I hope you never have to read this.
If you do, then I failed to come home.
Please believe that everything I kept from you was meant to protect you and Lily. I know you will feel betrayed. You have every right.
Your father’s company was built on theft, intimidation, and at least one death. Eleanor knows. Ethan knows more than he admits. I do not believe you were involved.
Lucas paused.
Claire’s faith in him felt like both comfort and punishment.
He continued.
There is another reason I cannot tell you everything in person.
Two weeks ago, I discovered someone has been entering our home while we sleep. Nothing obvious was taken. Lily’s drawings were moved. My computer had been searched. The only person who knew the alarm code was your mother.
I confronted Eleanor.
She told me I had no idea how many people depended on Bennett Global remaining untouched.
Then she said something I cannot forget:
“Your daughter will grow up without a mother if you continue.”
Lucas’s vision blurred.
Rachel read over his shoulder and covered her mouth.
Claire’s letter continued.
If anything happens to me, do not trust the first story you are given.
Find Caroline Mercer.
Find the red room.
And remember that Lily’s blue music box contains the one copy no one knows exists.
I love you.
I have loved you every day, even on the days fear made me distant.
Tell Lily that brave hearts are not hearts without fear.
They are hearts that choose love while afraid.
Claire
Lucas lowered the pages.
“The music box.”
Rachel stood.
“It’s in Lily’s bedroom.”
They left the hospital under police escort.
Lucas had not returned home since leaving for the wedding. The house still contained signs of the morning’s celebration.
A flower arrangement stood beside the stairs.
Vanessa’s suitcase rested near the bedroom.
A wedding photograph schedule lay on the kitchen counter.
Every object felt like part of someone else’s life.
Lily led Lucas upstairs.
Her room remained untouched.
A blue wooden music box sat on the shelf beside her bed. Claire had given it to her on her third birthday.
Lucas lifted the lid.
A small ballerina turned while a delicate melody played.
“There’s nothing inside,” Rachel said.
Lily climbed onto the bed.
“Mommy showed me the secret door.”
She pressed the ballerina’s platform and twisted it.
The interior panel released.
Inside was a memory card wrapped in plastic.
Lucas stared at it.
Claire had placed one final copy of the evidence inside their daughter’s toy.
Detective Torres arrived with a digital forensics specialist.
They inserted the card into an isolated computer.
Several folders appeared.
Financial records.
Audio files.
Photographs.
A video labeled OCTOBER 14—IF I DISAPPEAR.
October 14 was the day before Claire’s crash.
Lucas opened it.
Claire appeared on screen inside a hotel room.
Her hair was tied back. She looked exhausted.
“I have confirmed Thomas Bennett ordered Victor Shaw to sabotage Daniel Mercer’s warehouse,” she said. “The fire killed Daniel and two employees. Thomas used the tragedy to take control of the company.”
Claire held up several documents.
“Years later, Eleanor discovered the truth. Instead of reporting it, she used it to control Thomas. After his death, she continued paying Shaw to silence witnesses.”
Lucas felt Rachel’s hand grip his shoulder.
Claire continued.
“I also discovered that Bennett Global has maintained an off-book medical facility through a private security subsidiary.”
Torres leaned closer.
“What kind of medical facility?”
Claire answered from the video.
“It is called Northstar Recovery Center. Officially, it treats executives suffering from addiction and exhaustion. In reality, it has been used to confine people who threaten the company.”
Lucas stared at the screen.
Claire’s voice became unsteady.
“I believe Caroline Mercer’s mother was held there before her death.”
The video shifted as Claire adjusted the camera.
“If I am injured or declared dead, search Northstar.”
Lucas stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.
“Where is it?”
The forensic specialist searched the documents.
“There are references to a property in northern Vermont.”
Torres immediately contacted federal authorities.
Lily sat on the bed, watching the adults.
“Is Mommy there?”
Lucas knelt in front of her.
“I don’t know.”
“But she might be?”
He could not lie.
“She might have been there.”
Lily’s eyes filled with hope.
That frightened him more than her tears.
A phone rang downstairs.
It was the secure line Detective Torres had installed.
Lucas answered.
A woman spoke.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Dr. Evelyn Price. I worked at Northstar Recovery Center.”
Torres signaled for the call to be recorded.
Lucas gripped the phone.
“Did you know Claire Bennett?”
There was a long pause.
“Yes.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
“When?”
“She arrived three years ago after a car accident.”
Rachel gasped.
Lucas could barely speak.
“Was she alive?”
“She had severe injuries, but she was alive.”
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened to her?”
“Victor Shaw ordered us to keep her sedated. Her records listed her as Jane Marlow. No visitors were allowed except Eleanor Bennett.”
Lucas felt rage spread through him.
“My mother visited her?”
“Several times.”
“Why didn’t you report this?”
“I was afraid. Two nurses who asked questions disappeared.”
Torres took the phone.
“Dr. Price, where are you now?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“We can protect you.”
“No one can protect me from Shaw.”
The line crackled.
Then Dr. Price spoke more quickly.
“Claire began remembering her identity after six months. She tried to escape. Shaw moved her.”
“Where?”
“There was a transport order to a second location called Haven Nine.”
Torres searched the computer.
“No record.”
Dr. Price whispered, “Haven Nine is not a building. It’s a person.”
“What person?”
A loud sound interrupted the call.
Dr. Price gasped.
“They found me.”
The line went dead.
Torres ordered agents to trace the call.
Lucas stared at Claire’s frozen image on the computer screen.
Three years.
His wife had survived.
His mother knew.
Lily approached the desk.
She touched the screen.
“Mommy looks scared.”
Lucas lifted her into his arms.
“I’m going to find her.”
The forensic specialist opened another file.
“This was recorded six months after the accident.”
The image showed a hospital room.
Claire sat on a narrow bed wearing a gray gown. Her face was bruised and thinner, but she was unmistakably alive.
She looked directly into the hidden camera.
“My name is Claire Bennett,” she said slowly. “My husband is Lucas Bennett. My daughter is Lily.”
A door opened behind her.
Victor Shaw entered.
Claire’s expression changed.
The video ended.
Then a final text file appeared.
It contained one line:
HAVEN NINE: SUBJECT TRANSFERRED TO DR. ADRIAN VALE.
Lucas knew the name.
May you like
Dr. Adrian Vale was one of Bennett Global’s board members.
He was also Vanessa’s father.
