## CHAPTER 14: THE NINTH BELL

Bennett Global headquarters had been evacuated after the earlier explosion.
Federal agents controlled the main entrances, but the underground archive system had been designed decades before modern security standards.
Malcolm Crane had spent forty years as the company’s attorney.
He knew every hidden passage.
Lucas entered through the service level with Claire, Caroline, and Detective Torres.
Lily remained at a secure federal residence with Rachel.
The first Bennett headquarters had once been a five-story brick building. During expansion, developers constructed the glass tower around it, preserving the old lobby and clock tower as architectural features.
Beneath it remained the original vault.
At 8:27 p.m., the group descended a narrow iron staircase.
Claire ran her fingers along the brick wall.
“I have been here.”
“When?” Lucas asked.
“Before the crash. Thomas showed me the vault.”
Caroline looked at her.
“Did you find the ledger?”
“No. He said the answer was hidden in the company motto.”
The old Bennett motto appeared above the vault:
WHAT WE BUILD ENDURES.
Lucas had read those words thousands of times.
Claire touched the first letter of each word.
W.W.B.E.
Caroline studied the brass dial.
“Four letters.”
Lucas examined the founders’ plaque on the wall.
THOMAS BENNETT AND DANIEL MERCER—1982.
“Build does not begin with Bennett,” he said. “It begins with both.”
Claire looked at him.
“The motto was never about construction.”
Caroline entered the founding year followed by the Mercer ownership percentage.
198260.
The vault unlocked.
Inside were shelves of paper records, old currency, and legal documents.
At the center stood a small safe.
A man’s voice came from the darkness.
“You always were clever, Claire.”
Malcolm stepped into view.
He held a gun against Ethan’s neck.
Ethan’s hands were tied.
“You found the ledger?” Caroline asked.
“Not yet.”
Malcolm motioned toward the safe.
“But you will open it.”
Claire examined the lock.
It required a fingerprint and voice command.
Thomas had designed it for two founders.
One side was labeled BENNETT.
The other MERCER.
Lucas placed his hand on the Bennett scanner.
Caroline placed hers on Mercer.
The machine rejected them.
Malcolm smiled.
“Blood is not enough. It needs the original recorded voices.”
“The founders are dead or imprisoned,” Lucas said.
“Thomas recorded the activation phrase in Claire’s files.”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t remember it.”
Malcolm pressed the gun harder against Ethan.
“Then remember quickly.”
Ethan looked at Caroline.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“My son.”
Caroline’s face became rigid.
“You knew he was mine?”
“I discovered the truth after the boating accident.”
Lucas looked toward Claire.
Vanessa had admitted the young man killed in the accident was Caroline’s son.
Caroline stepped toward Ethan.
“What happened that night?”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Vanessa and I were drinking. Your son, Michael, was operating the boat. We argued. I grabbed the wheel.”
“You killed him.”
“The boat hit a marker. He fell overboard.”
“And you left him.”
“I tried to find him.”
“Shaw removed his body before the police arrived.”
Caroline’s eyes filled with grief and rage.
“You allowed me to believe my son disappeared.”
“I was a coward.”
“Yes.”
Malcolm struck Ethan with the gun.
“Enough confession.”
Claire stood before the safe.
A memory flickered across her face.
“Thomas said the founders made a promise.”
“What promise?” Lucas asked.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Daniel said, ‘No family name is greater than the people who carry the weight.’”
Caroline inhaled.
“My mother used to say that.”
Lucas looked at the safe.
Two microphones waited beneath the scanners.
He spoke into the Bennett side.
“No family name is greater—”
Caroline completed the phrase.
“—than the people who carry the weight.”
The safe opened.
Inside lay the original ownership ledger.
Malcolm smiled.
“Give it to me.”
Caroline removed the book.
Malcolm pushed Ethan forward.
“Exchange.”
Caroline held the ledger against her chest.
“You will kill us once you have it.”
“Then perhaps you should think of a better plan.”
The clock tower began striking nine.
The first bell echoed through the building.
At that moment, emergency lights activated.
The board meeting had begun upstairs.
Malcolm glanced toward the ceiling.
Ethan moved.
He drove his shoulder into Malcolm.
The gun fired.
Ethan fell.
Caroline dropped the ledger and caught him.
Torres fired at Malcolm.
He retreated behind a steel shelf.
Lucas pulled Claire to the floor.
Bullets struck the vault walls.
Malcolm grabbed the ledger and ran through a rear passage.
Torres followed.
Lucas knelt beside Ethan.
Blood spread across his abdomen.
Caroline pressed her hands against the wound.
“Stay awake.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I didn’t know you were my sister.”
“That does not erase what you did.”
“I know.”
“You do not get forgiveness because you are dying.”
“I know.”
Caroline’s voice broke despite her anger.
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He removed a small waterproof drive.
“Northstar records.”
Caroline took it.
“Why give this to me?”
“Because Malcolm was going to destroy it.”
The ninth bell rang.
Above them, the board voted.
Lucas’s phone displayed the result.
He had been removed as chief executive.
Malcolm’s chosen interim leader was appointed.
The name appeared on the screen:
RACHEL BENNETT.
Lucas stared at it.
Rachel was under federal protection.
She had not agreed to become CEO.
Claire looked at the result.
“This was arranged before tonight.”
A message arrived from Rachel’s phone.
RACHEL:
Lucas, I’m sorry.
The next message followed.
RACHEL:
They have Lily again.
Lucas’s blood ran cold.
A live video opened.
Lily sat inside the Bennett family mansion beside Eleanor.
Rachel stood behind them with a gun pressed to her back.
Eleanor smiled at the camera.
“Bring the ledger home,” she said, “or this family loses another mother.”
The video ended.
Caroline looked toward the passage where Malcolm had escaped with the ledger.
Lucas stood.
“He’s taking it to her.”
Claire grabbed his arm.
“This is what Eleanor wants. All of us in one place.”
Lucas looked at Ethan bleeding on the vault floor.
Then at the black screen where his daughter had appeared.
“She has spent decades controlling this family through fear.”
“What are you going to do?” Claire asked.
Lucas’s expression became calm.
May you like
“I’m going to give her exactly what she thinks she wants.”
