## CHAPTER 13: THE HEIR NOBODY EXPECTED

The recording changed everything.
Ethan had spent his life believing he was Thomas Bennett’s son.
Then he discovered Malcolm Crane was his biological father.
Now Eleanor’s private conversation suggested both stories were false.
According to her, Ethan was the son of Daniel Mercer.
Caroline’s father.
That would make Ethan Caroline’s half-brother and a direct heir to the stolen Mercer ownership.
Lucas listened to the recording again.
Eleanor’s voice was unmistakable.
“Daniel came to me after Thomas took the company,” she said. “He was desperate. Angry. I convinced him I could help.”
Malcolm replied, “You slept with him.”
“I did what was necessary.”
“And Ethan?”
“Thomas believed the child was his. Later, when Thomas became suspicious, I told him Ethan was yours.”
Malcolm laughed bitterly.
“You let me raise another man’s son.”
“You barely raised him at all.”
The recording ended.
Caroline sat across from Lucas in the federal conference room.
Her expression was unreadable.
“My father had an affair with Eleanor.”
“It appears so.”
“And Ethan is my brother.”
“Possibly. We need a verified DNA test.”
Caroline looked toward the window.
“My mother believed Daniel remained faithful until he died.”
Lucas said quietly, “Everyone in this story believed a lie designed by someone else.”
Claire entered with Lily.
More memories had returned overnight.
She remembered Lily’s birth.
She remembered the yellow curtains in the child’s bedroom.
She remembered Lucas singing the wrong lyrics to lullabies.
But large sections of her life remained missing.
Lily climbed into a chair beside Caroline.
“Does this mean Uncle Ethan is your brother?”
Caroline looked at the child.
“It might.”
“Then you’re my aunt too.”
Caroline’s hard expression softened.
“I suppose I might be.”
Lily smiled.
Lucas marveled at how easily children accepted new family connections while adults turned bloodlines into weapons.
Torres entered.
“We located the tunnel exit Malcolm used. It leads to a private dock. A boat was waiting.”
“Any sign of Ethan?” Lucas asked.
“No.”
Claire placed her hand on the table.
“Malcolm needs Ethan alive if he wants to present him as the Mercer heir.”
Caroline nodded.
“He’ll use Ethan to claim my family’s ownership rights.”
Lucas looked at her.
“Would Ethan have a legitimate claim?”
“If Daniel was his father, yes.”
“Then Malcolm may try to force a settlement.”
Caroline’s eyes hardened.
“There will be no settlement with the man who helped imprison my mother.”
The board scheduled another vote.
Stock prices continued falling. Credit agencies threatened downgrades. Major partners suspended contracts.
Lucas addressed employees through a company-wide broadcast.
He did not hide the crimes.
“My family’s name appears on this company,” he said, “but thousands of honest people built its true value. We will cooperate with investigators, compensate victims, and restructure ownership. We will not protect a legacy purchased through suffering.”
Some directors called the statement reckless.
Employees responded differently.
Thousands signed an internal petition supporting transparency.
For the first time, Lucas understood that Bennett Global might survive without pretending Thomas Bennett was a hero.
Thomas requested a meeting from federal custody.
Lucas almost refused.
Claire encouraged him to go.
“You need answers that only he can give.”
“I don’t trust him.”
“You don’t have to trust someone to listen.”
Thomas sat behind reinforced glass.
Without the tailored suits and public confidence, he looked tired.
Lucas picked up the telephone.
“Is Ethan Daniel Mercer’s son?”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“Not until Ethan was ten.”
“How?”
“Daniel wrote Eleanor a letter before the warehouse fire. I found it years later.”
“You raised him anyway.”
“He was my wife’s child.”
“But you treated him like a disappointment.”
Thomas’s face tightened.
“I looked at him and saw Daniel.”
“That was your failure, not his.”
“Yes.”
Lucas had never heard his father accept blame so quickly.
“Did you kill Daniel?”
“I ordered Shaw to destroy financial records in the warehouse. Daniel arrived unexpectedly. Shaw locked him inside.”
“And you protected Shaw.”
“I protected the company.”
“You protected yourself.”
Thomas nodded.
“I did.”
“Why fake your death?”
“Eleanor learned I planned to confess. She and Malcolm intended to have me declared mentally incompetent. I staged the flight to escape.”
“And let three innocent people die.”
“I did not know Shaw had changed the crew.”
“You keep saying you did not know. At some point, refusing to know becomes a choice.”
Thomas looked down.
“You are right.”
Lucas studied the man he had worshiped as a child.
“You said the ledger is incomplete.”
“Daniel recorded every original investor and ownership percentage. It proves the Mercers held sixty percent.”
“Where is it?”
“I believe Margaret hid it inside the company’s first building.”
“That building was demolished.”
“The exterior was demolished. The original vault remains beneath the new headquarters.”
Lucas remembered the underground archive level.
“Does Caroline know?”
“I told Claire. She may have told Caroline.”
Lucas left the detention center and called Torres.
Before he reached the car, an alert appeared on every news channel.
Ethan stood at a podium inside an unknown industrial space.
Malcolm remained outside the camera frame.
Ethan’s face showed signs of injury.
“My name is Ethan Daniel Mercer,” he announced. “DNA results prove I am the son of Daniel Mercer, the murdered co-founder of Bennett Global.”
Reporters online reacted instantly.
Ethan continued.
“I am demanding the immediate transfer of all Bennett family voting shares to the Mercer heirs.”
Caroline watched the broadcast from headquarters.
“This is Malcolm speaking through him.”
Ethan held up a document.
“If the board refuses, evidence identifying every client of Northstar Recovery Center will be released publicly.”
The threat targeted judges, executives, politicians, and wealthy families.
Some may have been victims.
Others may have used Northstar to imprison people.
Claire listened carefully.
“He is sending us a message.”
Lucas looked at her.
“What message?”
“The words ‘immediate transfer’ and ‘voting shares.’ Ethan emphasized them.”
“So?”
“They were phrases we used in an old code.”
Lucas stared at her.
“You and Ethan had a code?”
“When we investigated financial documents at Harvard. If one of us was under pressure, we repeated legal phrases incorrectly.”
Caroline leaned toward the screen.
“What is he saying?”
Claire rewound the broadcast.
Ethan said, “The transfer must occur before the ninth bell.”
Claire’s face changed.
“Ninth bell means the old headquarters clock tower.”
Lucas looked toward the city skyline.
The first Bennett building had been preserved inside the company’s modern headquarters. Its clock tower remained above the central atrium.
“He’s telling us where Malcolm is holding him,” Claire said.
A new email arrived from Ethan’s account.
It contained only a photograph.
The original Bennett headquarters vault door.
A digital clock in the image displayed 8:12 p.m.
At nine o’clock, the board’s emergency vote would begin.
Caroline stood.
“Malcolm is going after the ledger.”
Claire looked at Lucas.
“And if he finds it before we do, he controls both the truth and Ethan.”
Lucas checked the clock.
May you like
They had forty-eight minutes.
