## CHAPTER 19: THE FINAL CEREMONY

Lucas reached the upstairs room seconds after Lily screamed.

She stood beside the open window, unharmed.

Claire pulled her into her arms.

“What happened?”

“A lady threw the veil through the window.”

Lucas looked outside.

A figure in white disappeared beyond the garden wall.

Security agents moved through the grounds.

The veil was not Vanessa’s.

It was older, yellowed around the edges.

Claire picked it up.

“This belonged to Eleanor.”

Lucas remembered photographs from his parents’ wedding.

His mother had worn the same lace pattern.

A note was pinned beneath it.

COME TO THE PLACE WHERE THE FIRST VOW WAS BROKEN.

MIDNIGHT.

Claire read it.

“The family chapel.”

Not the chapel where Lucas married Claire.

The private chapel on the Bennett estate where Thomas and Eleanor had married forty-one years earlier.

Torres increased security around the house.

“Malcolm wants to draw you out.”

“Then we use it to find him,” Lucas said.

Claire looked at the veil.

“This may be Eleanor’s message, not Malcolm’s.”

“She is still in federal custody.”

Torres checked her phone.

Her expression changed.

“Not anymore.”

Eleanor had been transported to a medical facility after complaining of chest pain. The ambulance never arrived.

Its driver was found unconscious.

Malcolm had taken her.

Lucas understood.

The final confrontation was not only about witnesses.

Malcolm wanted to settle his lifelong war with Eleanor.

At 11:40 p.m., Lucas and Claire approached the private chapel wearing concealed transmitters.

Torres’s team remained beyond the tree line.

Caroline insisted on joining them.

“Malcolm destroyed my family before you understood what family meant,” she said. “I will be there.”

The chapel doors stood open.

Candles lined the aisle.

Old wedding photographs rested on the pews.

Thomas and Eleanor smiling.

Lucas and Claire laughing beneath flower petals.

Photographs of Rachel, Ethan, Caroline, Lily, Vanessa, and Claire at Northstar.

At the altar, Malcolm stood beside Eleanor.

Her hands were bound.

Ethan sat in a wheelchair nearby.

He wore a hospital brace beneath his coat.

Lucas stared at him.

“You escaped custody too?”

Ethan shook his head.

“Malcolm’s people took me.”

Malcolm smiled.

“I wanted every surviving heir present.”

“Why?” Caroline asked.

“Because families require ceremonies.”

He motioned toward the altar.

“Tonight, the Bennett name ends.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“It already ended when the truth came out.”

“No. Public disgrace is temporary. Documents can be sealed. Companies can be renamed. People eventually prefer comforting lies.”

Malcolm held up a detonator.

Explosives were wired beneath the chapel floor.

“But a tragedy becomes permanent.”

Eleanor looked at Lucas.

“Leave.”

Malcolm struck her.

“Do not pretend you care now.”

Eleanor’s face showed no fear.

“I care enough to know you will kill them whether they stay or leave.”

Malcolm smiled.

“You always understood me.”

“Because I created you.”

The words surprised everyone.

Malcolm’s expression changed.

Eleanor continued.

“You were a young attorney when Thomas hired you. Ambitious, insecure, desperate to be invited into rooms where old families made decisions.”

“You loved me.”

“I used you.”

Malcolm’s jaw tightened.

“You told me Ethan was my son.”

“I told you what kept you loyal.”

“You let me build my life around a lie.”

Eleanor laughed softly.

“That is what we did to everyone.”

Malcolm raised the detonator.

Ethan spoke.

“Father.”

Malcolm looked at him.

Ethan had never called him that before.

“You want me to believe I mattered to you?” Malcolm asked.

“No.”

“Then why use that word?”

“Because it is the name you wanted more than you wanted me.”

Malcolm stared at him.

Ethan continued.

“I spent my life trying to prove I deserved a family that had already decided I was useful but unwanted.”

Caroline stood behind him.

“You had a family you never knew.”

Ethan looked toward her.

“I destroyed part of it.”

“Yes.”

“I cannot repair that.”

“No.”

“But I can stop him.”

Before anyone could react, Ethan rolled his wheelchair into Malcolm.

The detonator fell.

Lucas lunged.

Malcolm drew a gun and fired.

The bullet struck Ethan in the shoulder.

Caroline dragged him behind the altar.

Claire kicked the detonator beneath a pew.

Eleanor seized Malcolm’s wrist.

They struggled beside the candles.

“You ruined me,” Malcolm shouted.

Eleanor looked into his eyes.

“No. I gave you permission to become what you already wanted to be.”

He struck her.

Lucas tackled him.

The gun slid across the floor.

Malcolm reached for the detonator.

Claire reached it first.

A red timer activated automatically.

02:00.

Two minutes.

Torres’s voice came through the earpiece.

Bomb squad is moving.

Lucas fought Malcolm while Caroline cut Eleanor’s restraints.

Claire examined the detonator.

“Can it be stopped?”

Ethan pointed toward the altar.

“Main control box.”

Caroline opened the panel.

Four wires connected to a digital clock.

01:31.

Malcolm laughed as Lucas pinned him down.

“You cannot save everyone.”

Lucas looked toward the chapel doors.

“Get out!”

Claire shook her head.

“Not without you.”

“Take Lily’s mother out of here.”

“You are Lily’s father.”

Eleanor crawled toward the control box.

“I know the code.”

Caroline moved aside.

Eleanor entered six digits.

ACCESS DENIED.

The timer reached 00:58.

“What was the code?” Claire asked.

“Our wedding date.”

Malcolm laughed.

“You still think the first vow was ours.”

Eleanor stared at him.

Then understanding crossed her face.

“The first vow was Daniel and Thomas.”

Caroline remembered the founding year.

She entered 198260.

ACCESS DENIED.

00:39.

Ethan shouted, “The promise!”

Claire spoke the founders’ phrase.

“No family name is greater than the people who carry the weight.”

The panel requested numeric confirmation.

Lucas remembered the original ownership split.

“Forty Bennett. Sixty Mercer.”

Caroline entered 4060.

The timer stopped at 00:07.

Silence filled the chapel.

Bomb technicians entered seconds later.

Malcolm stopped fighting.

He looked around at the family he had tried to destroy.

“You think this changes anything?”

Lucas stood.

“It changes what happens next.”

Malcolm was taken into custody.

This time, he was transported under federal military guard.

Ethan received treatment for his shoulder.

Eleanor sat on the chapel steps as officers prepared to return her to custody.

Claire approached her.

“Why did you sign my termination order?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because you remembered too much.”

“That is the practical answer.”

“What other answer do you want?”

“The honest one.”

Eleanor stared at the dark trees.

“You had everything I never had.”

“What?”

“A husband who loved you without fearing you. A daughter who trusted you. The courage to leave power behind.”

“So you destroyed it.”

“I told myself I was protecting the family. The truth is, I could not bear watching you build a better one.”

Claire absorbed the confession.

“I will never forgive you.”

“I know.”

“But I will not teach Lily to hate you.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“That is more mercy than I deserve.”

Officers led her away.

At sunrise, Lucas returned home.

Lily ran into his arms.

“Is it over?”

He held her tightly.

“The dangerous part is.”

“Are we still a family?”

Lucas looked toward Claire.

She stood in the doorway.

Rachel waited beside her.

Caroline approached from the driveway after speaking with Torres.

Their family no longer resembled the one Lucas thought he had before the wedding.

But perhaps that was the point.

Families were not preserved by pretending nothing had happened.

They survived by deciding what would happen next.

“Yes,” Lucas told Lily. “We are still a family.”

Several months later, the trials began.

But one question remained unresolved.

The original Northstar archive contained records for twenty-four subjects.

Only twenty-three had been identified.

Subject Twenty-Four had no photograph.

Only a name.

May you like

Lucas Bennett.
