## CHAPTER 12: THE SISTER WHO FORGOT

Rachel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“That’s impossible.”
Claire stared at her across the boardroom.
“You had shorter hair.”
“I have never been inside Northstar.”
“You were in the room across from me.”
“No.”
“You sang when you were afraid.”
Rachel backed away from the table.
“I visited a wellness clinic in Switzerland after Dad died. I was exhausted. Mom said I needed rest.”
Caroline opened Claire’s files.
“What year?”
“Twelve years ago.”
“That was when Northstar began operating.”
Rachel’s breathing quickened.
Lucas approached slowly.
“Rachel, what do you remember about those six months?”
“I traveled.”
“Where?”
“Zurich. Paris. Milan.”
“Do you remember specific places?”
She opened her mouth.
No answer came.
“I have photographs.”
“Taken by whom?”
“Mom arranged everything.”
Lucas felt anger rise again.
Eleanor had not only imprisoned Claire.
She had done something to Rachel.
Detective Torres led them to a secure federal office while agents searched for Malcolm Crane.
A neurologist reviewed Rachel’s medical records.
Several pages had been altered.
One entry claimed Rachel suffered a severe breakdown after Thomas’s disappearance.
Rachel sat beside Claire.
“What did I say at Northstar?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Not much. You were heavily medicated. Sometimes you called for Lucas.”
Rachel looked toward her brother.
“Why would Mom send me there?”
Claire answered quietly.
“You saw something.”
“What?”
“I don’t remember.”
Lucas watched the two women.
Claire had lost three years.
Rachel might have lost six months.
Both had been treated as problems to erase.
Lily sat in the next room with a federal child specialist. She had already endured more than any child should.
Lucas wanted to take them all somewhere untouched by the Bennett name.
But the danger would follow until the truth was fully exposed.
The neurologist used guided memory exercises with Rachel.
At first, she remembered only fragments.
A hotel room.
Rain against glass.
Her father’s voice.
Then her body began to shake.
“I was at the airport,” she whispered.
“What happened there?” the neurologist asked.
“Dad called me.”
Thomas had supposedly died in the plane crash that morning.
“He told me not to board my flight,” Rachel said. “He said the plane was going to explode.”
Lucas leaned forward.
“What flight?”
“The private jet to London.”
The same jet Thomas was believed to have boarded.
Rachel continued.
“I went to the hangar. Dad was arguing with Mom.”
“What were they saying?”
“She said he could not disappear and leave her with the consequences.”
“What consequences?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel pressed her fingers to her temple.
“Malcolm was there.”
Claire watched closely.
“And Shaw?”
“Yes.”
Rachel’s eyes opened.
“Shaw took the pilots into another room.”
Lucas felt cold.
The three people who died in the plane crash may never have understood they were sacrifices in Thomas and Eleanor’s war.
Rachel continued.
“Dad saw me. He told me to run.”
“What did you do?”
“I called you.”
Lucas shook his head.
“I never received a call.”
“Mom took my phone.”
Rachel began crying.
“She said I was confused because of grief. But Dad wasn’t dead yet.”
The neurologist urged her to breathe.
Rachel’s next words came slowly.
“Malcolm injected me in the car.”
Lucas looked toward Torres.
“Malcolm helped send her to Northstar.”
Rachel covered her face.
“I remembered waking up in a white room. Mom told me the airport scene was a hallucination.”
Claire took her hand.
“They made you doubt yourself.”
Rachel looked at her.
“How did you survive it?”
“I don’t know whether I did.”
Lucas turned toward Caroline.
“Why would Ethan reveal Rachel’s file?”
“To prove Malcolm’s crimes,” Caroline said. “Or to destabilize you.”
Torres entered with new information.
“Vanessa contacted us.”
Lucas stood.
“Where is she?”
“She wants immunity.”
“She is not getting immunity.”
“She claims she knows where Malcolm is holding Ethan.”
“Holding him?”
“She says Ethan’s broadcast was forced.”
Lucas thought about the video.
Ethan had appeared confident, but Vanessa stood behind him without speaking until directed.
“Where does she want to meet?” he asked.
“An abandoned theater downtown.”
Claire looked at him.
“It’s a trap.”
“Probably.”
“Then why go?”
“Because every trap contains someone who believes they control the ending.”
The theater had closed twenty years earlier.
Its faded marquee still carried the title of its final production.
Torres positioned agents around the building.
Vanessa waited alone on the stage beneath a single spotlight.
She wore a black coat over hospital clothes. Her face was pale, and the wound in her side made her movements stiff.
Lucas approached from the center aisle.
“You shot between my brother and my daughter,” he said. “That is the only reason I came.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
“Where is Ethan?”
“Malcolm has him.”
“You left the hospital willingly.”
“An orderly gave me a message saying my father would be killed unless I went.”
“Your father is in federal custody.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“What does Malcolm want?”
“Control of the company and access to the original ledger.”
“We don’t have it.”
“He thinks Caroline does.”
Lucas stopped near the stage.
“Why did you agree to marry me?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with shame.
“At first, because Eleanor told me to.”
“How romantic.”
“She said marrying you would protect my father and erase the evidence from the boating accident.”
“And later?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I started believing I could become the woman you thought I was.”
“You locked Lily in a bathroom.”
“I was supposed to give her to a woman from a private boarding school. Eleanor said Lily would be kept safely until the guardianship hearing.”
“You believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
Lucas felt no sympathy.
“Who sent the message telling them to take Lily?”
“Malcolm.”
“Why use Caroline’s name?”
“To make you suspect the Mercer family.”
Vanessa reached into her coat.
Agents raised their weapons.
She slowly removed a flash drive.
“This contains Malcolm’s recordings.”
Lucas did not take it.
“Why give it to me now?”
“Because he is going to kill Ethan.”
“Why do you care?”
Vanessa’s silence gave the answer.
Lucas stared at her.
“You love him.”
“I thought I did.”
“You planned to marry me while protecting him.”
“I was confused.”
“No. You were selfish.”
Vanessa accepted the judgment.
She placed the drive on the stage.
“He is holding Ethan beneath the old courthouse. There are service tunnels connected to the river.”
Torres’s voice came through Lucas’s earpiece.
We have movement backstage.
Lucas looked toward the dark wings.
“Who came with you?”
“No one.”
A man stepped into the spotlight.
Malcolm Crane.
He held Lily’s stuffed rabbit in one hand.
Lucas’s heart stopped.
Lily had been under federal protection.
Malcolm smiled.
“The Bennett family has always mistaken guards for safety.”
Lucas glanced toward the rabbit.
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe, for the moment.”
Vanessa turned on Malcolm.
“You promised you wouldn’t involve her again.”
“I promised many things.”
Two armed men emerged with Ethan between them.
His face was bruised. His hands were bound.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You brought Lucas.”
“I had to.”
Malcolm addressed Lucas.
“The original Mercer ledger in exchange for Lily.”
“We don’t have it.”
“Caroline does.”
“She says she doesn’t.”
“She has spent her entire life waiting to reclaim the company. Of course she has it.”
Lucas stepped closer.
“If you hurt Lily, no document will save you.”
Malcolm smiled.
“You still believe this is about documents.”
“What is it about?”
“Legitimacy.”
Malcolm looked toward Ethan.
“My son has spent his life beneath Thomas Bennett’s name. When the truth is revealed, Ethan will become the rightful heir to the empire Eleanor and I built.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You never wanted a son. You wanted a weapon.”
Malcolm struck him.
Vanessa moved forward, but Malcolm raised a gun.
“Stay where you are.”
A child’s voice sounded from beneath the stage.
“Daddy!”
Lucas moved instinctively.
The floor exploded between them.
The blast threw him backward.
Smoke swallowed the theater.
Through the ringing in his ears, Lucas heard Malcolm shouting.
Then he saw Vanessa crawling toward a trapdoor.
She pulled it open.
Lily was tied beneath the stage.
Vanessa cut the ropes.
“Run to your father!”
Lily climbed out.
Lucas reached her and held her close.
Agents entered from every direction.
Malcolm disappeared into the service tunnels with Ethan.
Torres arrested Vanessa.
As officers led her away, she looked at Lucas.
“The flash drive,” she said. “Listen to the recording called First Son.”
Later that night, Lucas opened the file.
Eleanor’s voice played through the speakers.
“Ethan can never know Malcolm is not his father.”
Malcolm responded.
“Then whose son is he?”
Eleanor whispered a name.
May you like
“Daniel Mercer.”
Caroline’s dead father.
