## CHAPTER 15: THE BENNETT FAMILY DINNER

The Bennett mansion had hosted governors, celebrities, business leaders, and foreign royalty.
Eleanor once described the dining room as the place where history came to ask the Bennett family for permission.
That night, it became a hostage chamber.
Lily sat at the far end of the table.
Rachel sat beside her.
Victor Shaw’s remaining men guarded the doors.
Eleanor wore the same silver gown from the interrupted wedding, though blood from her earlier shoulder injury stained one sleeve.
Malcolm entered through the side entrance carrying the original Mercer ledger.
“You took too long,” Eleanor said.
“I encountered resistance.”
“Is Ethan alive?”
Malcolm placed the ledger on the table.
“Does it matter?”
For the first time, Eleanor looked wounded.
“He is my son.”
Malcolm laughed.
“He is Daniel Mercer’s son.”
“I raised him.”
“You manipulated him.”
“As did you.”
Rachel watched them.
“You destroyed everyone you claimed to love.”
Eleanor turned toward her daughter.
“Everything I did was to preserve this family.”
“You erased six months of my life.”
“You were hysterical.”
“I saw Dad alive.”
“You would have ruined the plan.”
Lily looked at Eleanor.
“Grandma, families aren’t supposed to hurt each other.”
Eleanor’s expression softened briefly.
“You are too young to understand.”
“I understand being locked in a bathroom.”
Rachel squeezed Lily’s hand.
Malcolm opened the ledger.
“With this, we can negotiate ownership. Caroline receives a settlement. Ethan becomes the public Mercer heir. The company survives under our control.”
“Our control?” Eleanor asked.
Malcolm looked at her.
“You are facing kidnapping charges.”
“And you believe you will walk away?”
“I have evidence against half the federal judiciary.”
Eleanor smiled coldly.
“You always overestimated the loyalty of frightened men.”
Headlights appeared outside.
Lucas arrived in a black SUV.
Claire and Caroline sat beside him.
Detective Torres’s team waited several blocks away. Eleanor had threatened to kill Lily if police approached the estate.
Lucas carried a duplicate ledger created from photographs Claire had taken years earlier.
The original was already inside.
But Eleanor did not know Lucas knew that.
Claire looked toward the mansion.
“I remember our first Christmas here.”
Lucas turned to her.
“Your mother spilled wine on Eleanor’s antique rug.”
“And Eleanor acted like she had witnessed a murder.”
“You laughed for an hour.”
Claire smiled faintly.
The memory lasted only seconds before fear returned.
“Lily is inside because of your family’s secrets.”
“She is inside because Eleanor chooses cruelty.”
“And we are walking into her control.”
“Not entirely.”
Caroline checked the small transmitter hidden inside her coat. Ethan’s waterproof drive had already been copied and sent to federal investigators.
Northstar’s records included payments, patient lists, surveillance videos, and Malcolm’s communications with public officials.
The blackmail network he depended on was collapsing in real time.
Lucas entered the mansion first.
Two guards searched him.
Claire and Caroline followed.
Eleanor waited in the dining room.
Lily’s face brightened.
“Daddy!”
Lucas stopped himself from running to her.
“I’m here.”
Eleanor looked at Claire.
“You should have remained dead.”
Claire met her gaze.
“You should have learned to live without controlling everyone.”
Malcolm held out his hand.
“The ledger.”
Lucas placed the duplicate on the table.
Malcolm examined it.
He compared several pages with the original he had stolen.
His expression changed.
“This is a copy.”
“It is enough to establish the Mercer claim.”
“I asked for every supporting document.”
Caroline stepped forward.
“You already have the original.”
Eleanor turned toward Malcolm.
He said nothing.
“You lied to me,” Eleanor said.
“I protected our bargaining position.”
“There is no ‘our’ with you.”
Malcolm reached for the ledger.
Eleanor drew a pistol from beneath the table and aimed at him.
The guards shifted uneasily.
Malcolm smiled.
“You won’t shoot me.”
“Why?”
“Because I know where Ethan is.”
“He was shot.”
“He survived. My people removed him from the ambulance.”
Caroline’s face changed.
Lucas studied Malcolm.
“You are bluffing.”
Malcolm held up his phone.
A photograph showed Ethan inside a vehicle with a medical tube attached to his chest.
He was unconscious but alive.
Eleanor lowered the gun slightly.
Malcolm continued.
“Transfer your remaining voting shares to me, and Ethan receives medical care.”
Rachel stared at her mother.
“Now you know what it feels like.”
Eleanor’s eyes remained on Ethan’s image.
For decades, she had sacrificed everyone to preserve power.
Now Malcolm demanded she sacrifice power to save the son she had used most brutally.
Lily whispered, “Please help Uncle Ethan.”
Eleanor looked at the child.
Something in her face shifted.
Perhaps a memory of Ethan as a boy.
Perhaps the realization that all her victories had left her surrounded by people who feared or hated her.
She placed the gun on the table.
“Prepare the transfer.”
Malcolm smiled.
Lucas stepped closer.
“You know he won’t honor it.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because despite what you believe, I am still his mother.”
Malcolm opened his laptop.
Caroline’s transmitter sent the conversation to Torres.
As Eleanor began entering her authorization codes, Malcolm’s phone vibrated repeatedly.
News alerts appeared.
NORTHSTAR RECORDS RELEASED TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
JUDGES AND EXECUTIVES UNDER INVESTIGATION.
MALCOLM CRANE NAMED IN ILLEGAL DETENTION NETWORK.
Malcolm looked toward Caroline.
“What did you do?”
“What my mother would have done if your people had not taken her.”
Malcolm grabbed Lily.
He pressed a gun against her head.
Lucas stopped.
“Let her go.”
“Everyone backs away.”
Eleanor reached for her own weapon.
Malcolm aimed at her.
“You first.”
She froze.
Malcolm dragged Lily toward the terrace.
Claire moved slowly to the side.
Malcolm saw her.
“Stay where you are.”
Claire stopped.
“You imprisoned me because you were afraid of what I remembered.”
“You were collateral damage.”
“I remembered something else.”
Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.
“The night of the crash, you were in the second car.”
Lucas looked at Claire.
She continued.
“Eleanor ordered Shaw to force me off the road. But you told him to keep me alive.”
Malcolm smiled.
“You think that makes me merciful?”
“No. You needed me for the trust code.”
She took another step.
“You never found it.”
Malcolm’s attention remained on her.
Lily looked toward Lucas.
He gave the smallest nod.
Lily dropped suddenly and bit Malcolm’s hand.
He shouted.
Claire lunged for the gun.
Lucas crossed the room.
A shot fired.
The terrace window shattered.
Malcolm struck Claire and pulled Lily back.
Before he could raise the weapon again, Eleanor fired.
The bullet struck Malcolm in the shoulder.
He stumbled through the broken terrace door.
Lucas reached Lily and pulled her away.
Malcolm climbed over the stone railing.
A helicopter rose from behind the trees.
A rope ladder hung beneath it.
Malcolm grabbed the ladder as the aircraft lifted.
Federal vehicles stormed the driveway.
Torres entered with agents.
Eleanor lowered her weapon and raised her hands.
“Ethan,” she said. “Find him.”
Torres called the medical team.
Agents traced Malcolm’s helicopter.
Lucas held Lily while Claire pressed a hand against her bleeding forehead.
Caroline searched Malcolm’s abandoned phone.
“There’s a live location connected to Ethan’s photograph.”
The signal came from an ambulance moving toward the coast.
Torres ordered units to intercept it.
Eleanor looked at Lucas.
“I saved her.”
“You also put her there.”
“I know.”
It was the first time she had spoken without defense.
Lucas did not forgive her.
But he recognized the beginning of truth.
An officer handcuffed Eleanor.
Before being led away, she touched Lily’s hair.
Lily stepped back.
Eleanor lowered her hand.
“I am sorry,” she whispered.
Lily looked at her grandmother.
“I hope you learn how to be good.”
Eleanor’s face crumpled.
Outside, the helicopter carrying Malcolm disappeared into the clouds.
Caroline examined the flight data.
“He isn’t leaving the country.”
“Where is he going?” Lucas asked.
She turned the screen toward him.
The coordinates pointed toward the ruins of Northstar Recovery Center.
Claire stared at the location.
“He’s going to destroy whatever remains.”
Lucas looked toward Torres.
“And Ethan?”
The intercepted ambulance was empty.
A message appeared on Claire’s phone.
It came from Ethan.
ETHAN:
Malcolm is taking me back to where all of this started.
Then a second message arrived.
ETHAN:
May you like
Do not let him open Room Zero.
