## CHAPTER 2: THE EMPTY HALLWAY

Lucas reached the service corridor seconds after Lily disappeared.

The hallway stretched behind the grand ballroom, narrow and dim compared with the glittering celebration outside. Metal carts loaded with untouched desserts lined one wall. Floral boxes and discarded ribbons crowded the other.

“Lily!” Lucas shouted.

His voice echoed through the corridor.

There was no answer.

Rachel ran behind him, lifting the hem of her blue dress.

“She was holding my hand,” she said breathlessly. “The lights flickered, someone pushed through the guests, and then she was gone.”

Lucas turned toward the security director.

“Lock down the entire building.”

“It’s already happening.”

“Check every camera. Every elevator. Every loading dock.”

Two officers split in opposite directions.

Lucas moved toward the kitchen.

Cooks and servers stood motionless as security personnel searched under tables and inside storage rooms. A tray of champagne glasses had shattered near the back entrance.

One waiter pointed toward the loading area.

“I saw someone wearing a catering jacket carrying a child.”

Lucas’s blood ran cold.

“Which direction?”

“Toward the freight elevator.”

Lucas sprinted past him.

The freight elevator doors were closing when he reached the end of the corridor. He forced his hands between them, triggering the safety mechanism.

The doors opened.

The elevator was empty.

A small blue shoe lay on the floor.

Lucas recognized it immediately.

Lily had chosen those shoes because Claire used to call blue the color of brave hearts.

He picked it up with shaking hands.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“She was here.”

Lucas pressed the button for the parking level.

The elevator descended with agonizing slowness.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

He answered.

“What?”

“You have to listen to me,” Vanessa said. Her voice trembled. “The person who took Lily is not trying to harm her.”

“You have ten seconds to tell me who it is.”

“I don’t know who they sent.”

“Then you are useless to me.”

“Lucas, wait. There is a property outside the city. An old Bennett estate near Lake Marlow.”

Lucas froze.

The elevator continued downward.

“How do you know that?”

“Because that was where they planned to keep her until the guardianship papers were approved.”

Rachel stared at him.

Lucas put the call on speaker.

“Who planned it?”

Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.

“I only knew the contact as Mercer.”

“Mercer who?”

“I never met him.”

“You exchanged dozens of messages.”

“He used voice calls and encrypted texts. He knew everything about your family. Claire’s trust. Lily’s shares. Your medical history.”

Lucas clenched the blue shoe.

“Why did you agree to help him?”

“He promised me control of the company.”

Rachel stared at the phone in disbelief.

“You were going to steal from a child?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I was desperate.”

“Desperate people ask for help,” Rachel said. “They don’t arrange kidnappings.”

The elevator opened to the underground parking garage.

A black catering van sped toward the exit.

“There!” Rachel shouted.

Lucas ran toward his car.

The van smashed through the lowering security barrier and disappeared onto the street.

Lucas jumped behind the wheel of his SUV. Rachel climbed into the passenger seat.

The security director approached.

“Police are on their way.”

“They can follow.”

Lucas accelerated out of the garage.

The van was already several blocks ahead, weaving through afternoon traffic.

Rachel called emergency services and relayed their location.

Vanessa was still connected through the speakers.

“Lucas, do not follow them to the estate alone.”

“Why?”

“Mercer said there were things buried there that could destroy your family.”

Lucas glanced at Rachel.

“What things?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I swear.”

The van turned onto the expressway.

Lucas followed.

His phone chimed with a photograph from the unknown number.

Lily sat in the back of the van with her wrists bound by a white ribbon from the wedding decorations. Her frightened eyes stared directly into the camera.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

UNKNOWN CONTACT:

Stop following, or the next picture will be worse.

Lucas’s foot eased off the accelerator.

Rachel read the message.

“What are you doing?”

“They can see us.”

“Then let the police take over.”

“They may kill her before the police get close.”

Lucas exited the expressway abruptly and pulled into a crowded gas station.

The van continued north.

Rachel contacted the dispatcher and gave its direction.

Lucas turned off the engine.

Every instinct told him to keep chasing.

But Lily’s life mattered more than his anger.

Vanessa’s voice returned through the call.

“Mercer will contact you. He wants something.”

“What?”

“The controlling shares in Bennett Global.”

“Those shares belong to Lily.”

“That’s why she was supposed to be declared unfit. If you signed the transfer, I would control them as guardian.”

“And then?”

A long silence.

“Then I would transfer them to Mercer.”

Rachel leaned toward the phone.

“Who benefits from controlling Bennett Global?”

“Almost anyone in the family,” Lucas said.

The company was worth billions. Claire’s family had helped build it alongside the Bennetts, and her death had transferred a significant portion of the voting shares to Lily.

Until Lily turned twenty-five, Lucas served as trustee.

No sale or transfer could happen without his authorization.

Unless Lily was legally removed from his care.

Lucas looked at the locket in his hand.

“Why did Claire’s locket have the trust code?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I was told to find it in Eleanor’s study.”

Rachel’s head snapped around.

“Our mother had it?”

“That’s where I found it.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

Vanessa hurried to continue.

“Eleanor told me the locket belonged to the Bennett family and that Claire stole it. She said it needed to be returned before the ceremony.”

Lucas tightened his grip on the phone.

“Put my mother on.”

“She isn’t here.”

“What do you mean?”

“She disappeared when Lily was taken.”

Rachel immediately called the security director.

After a brief conversation, she looked at Lucas.

“Mom left through the east stairwell. Her car is gone.”

Vanessa whispered, “I told you. This is bigger than me.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Eleanor had never approved of Claire.

She considered Claire’s family too ordinary, despite the fact that Claire had been brilliant enough to transform Bennett Global from a regional real estate company into an international investment firm.

After Claire died, Eleanor became warmer toward Lily.

Or so Lucas had believed.

A police vehicle pulled into the gas station.

Detective Maya Torres stepped out.

Lucas knew her from a corporate fraud investigation two years earlier. She was calm, direct, and difficult to intimidate.

She approached his window.

“Mr. Bennett, we are tracking the van through traffic cameras. We need every detail.”

Lucas handed her the black phone and the legal documents.

Torres studied the messages.

“Who had access to the wedding schedule?”

“Vanessa, the planner, both families, security.”

“And the old estate?”

“Only the Bennetts.”

Vanessa spoke from the car speakers.

“I gave Lucas the location.”

Torres leaned closer.

“Ms. Hart, remain at the hotel. Officers are coming to take you into custody.”

“I need protection.”

“That depends on how quickly you cooperate.”

A new message appeared on Lucas’s phone.

UNKNOWN CONTACT:

Go to the chapel where you married Claire.

Come alone.

Bring the locket.

Lucas read it aloud.

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

Torres examined the message.

“The chapel is fifteen minutes from here. We can place officers nearby.”

“They said alone.”

“You will appear alone.”

Lucas understood.

“Plainclothes officers?”

“And a tracker.”

Vanessa suddenly shouted through the phone.

“Do not take the locket!”

Everyone fell silent.

Lucas stared at the screen.

“Why?”

“The code scratched inside it is not only for the trust.”

“What else does it open?”

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Claire left something behind.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. Mercer believed Lily knew.”

Lucas looked at the photograph of his terrified daughter.

“Lily is seven.”

“She has been drawing the same picture for months, hasn’t she?”

Lucas’s heart stopped.

Lily often drew a red-roofed house beside a lake, even though Lucas had never taken her to Lake Marlow.

There was always a woman standing in an upstairs window.

Lucas had assumed the woman represented Claire.

Vanessa continued.

“Mercer saw one of the drawings in your home. He said Claire must have shown Lily something before she died.”

Rachel’s voice became unsteady.

“Claire died when Lily was four. She could remember.”

Lucas looked toward Detective Torres.

“We’re going to the chapel.”

Fifteen minutes later, Lucas entered the small stone chapel where he and Claire had married ten years earlier.

The building had been closed for renovations, and dust covered the wooden pews.

He wore a hidden microphone beneath his shirt.

The locket hung around his neck.

“Lily?” he called.

A figure stepped from behind the altar.

It was not Mercer.

It was Eleanor.

Lucas’s mother held a pistol in one hand.

With the other, she gripped Lily’s shoulder.

Lily’s wrists were no longer tied, but tears streaked her face.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

Lucas stopped halfway down the aisle.

“Let her go.”

Eleanor’s expression was calm.

Almost sorrowful.

“You were never supposed to follow the van.”

“You planned all of this.”

“I tried to protect what belongs to our family.”

“Lily is our family.”

“She is Claire’s final weapon against us.”

Lucas took another step.

Eleanor raised the gun.

“Do not come closer.”

Lily looked at her father.

Then she slowly opened her hand.

Something rested in her palm.

A tiny brass key.

Eleanor saw it.

Her composure shattered.

“Where did you get that?”

Lily whispered, “Mommy gave it to me.”

Eleanor tightened her grip.

Lucas heard Detective Torres’s voice through the concealed earpiece.

Keep her talking.

Lucas stared at the key.

“What does it open?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with fear.

“Something Claire should have taken to her grave.”

A movement sounded behind the altar.

Someone else was inside the chapel.

Eleanor turned too late.

A man stepped from the shadows and pressed a second gun against Lily’s back.

Lucas recognized him.

May you like

It was his younger brother, Ethan.

And Ethan smiled.
