## CHAPTER 11: THE PATERNITY FILES

The message from Vanessa turned suspicion into another weapon.
Ask him which Bennett child is really his.
Lucas read it while standing in the hallway outside Lily’s bedroom.
Claire watched him.
“What does it mean?”
“It could be a distraction.”
“Or your family has another secret.”
Lucas almost laughed.
“In this family, that is usually the safer assumption.”
Federal agents transported Thomas to a secure detention facility. Ethan and Vanessa remained missing. Eleanor refused to speak without her attorneys. Victor Shaw demanded immunity in exchange for information.
By morning, every major news outlet had learned that Claire Bennett was alive.
Reporters surrounded the Bennett residence.
Headlines declared that a dead billionaire’s wife had returned after three years. Commentators speculated about kidnapping, corporate fraud, and the canceled wedding.
Lucas closed the curtains.
Claire stood in the living room, staring at television footage of herself.
“They’re talking about me as if I’m a ghost.”
“You don’t have to watch.”
“I need to understand the life I’m returning to.”
“You can decide whether you want it.”
Claire turned.
“You think I might leave.”
Lucas answered carefully.
“I think you should have choices. Everyone else has spent years taking them from you.”
Before Claire could respond, Detective Torres arrived with Caroline.
Caroline carried a sealed evidence bag containing copies of the recovered documents.
“We found a reference to the paternity records in Claire’s files,” she said.
She placed a memorandum on the table.
It had been written by Claire four years earlier.
Thomas Bennett’s medical records indicate a hereditary blood disorder incompatible with Ethan Bennett’s documented blood type. Further testing may establish that Ethan is not Thomas’s biological son.
Lucas looked toward Claire.
“Do you remember writing this?”
She read the page.
“No.”
Caroline continued.
“There’s more.”
A laboratory invoice showed Eleanor had ordered private DNA tests twenty-eight years earlier.
The results were missing.
Torres sat across from Lucas.
“If Ethan discovered he was not Thomas’s son, it may explain why he became desperate to control the company.”
“Who is his father?”
“We don’t know.”
Claire touched the memorandum.
“Vanessa took the records because Ethan believes they contain leverage.”
“Against whom?” Lucas asked.
Caroline answered.
“Against Eleanor.”
The front door opened.
Rachel entered with Lily after a security check.
Lily ran to Claire.
Claire embraced her more naturally than she had the night before.
Lucas noticed.
So did Claire.
Small pieces of their life were returning through touch rather than thought.
Rachel handed Lucas a tablet.
“The board has called an emergency meeting.”
“Today?”
“They want to remove you as chief executive.”
Caroline frowned.
“On what grounds?”
“That the kidnapping scandal and Claire’s return create instability.”
Lucas scanned the list of board members supporting the vote.
Dr. Adrian Vale’s seat was suspended.
Eleanor’s allies controlled enough votes to challenge him.
The meeting would occur in three hours.
Claire looked at the screen.
“Go.”
“I’m not leaving you and Lily.”
“Security is here.”
“Ethan is still out there.”
“And he wants the company. If you surrender it, he gets closer to whatever he is planning.”
Lucas studied her.
“You sound like the Claire I remember.”
“I don’t know whether that is comforting or terrifying.”
At Bennett Global headquarters, protesters and reporters crowded the entrance.
Lucas entered through the underground garage with Torres and Caroline.
The boardroom occupied the top floor.
Sixteen directors sat around the long black table.
Eleanor’s attorney, Malcolm Crane, attended as her representative.
Malcolm stood when Lucas entered.
“This meeting concerns your temporary removal.”
Lucas took his seat.
“My mother is charged with kidnapping my daughter.”
“Allegations are not convictions.”
“She was arrested beside an open grave while holding stolen evidence.”
Malcolm’s expression remained neutral.
“Your judgment has also been questioned. You nearly married a woman involved in a conspiracy against the company.”
Lucas absorbed the attack.
It was effective because it contained truth.
He had trusted Vanessa.
He had failed to see what happened to Lily when he was not watching.
He had believed Claire was dead without challenging the convenient evidence.
A director named Susan Patel spoke.
“Lucas, this is not personal. The company’s stock has lost eighteen percent since this morning.”
“Everything about this is personal,” Lucas said. “That is the problem.”
He distributed copies of Claire’s evidence.
“Our company was founded through criminal fraud. Funds have been used for decades to silence witnesses and operate illegal detention facilities. We cannot protect Bennett Global by continuing to hide the truth.”
Several directors reacted angrily.
Malcolm smiled.
“Mr. Bennett has just admitted that he intends to expose the company to catastrophic liability.”
“I intend to cooperate with federal investigators.”
“Which will destroy shareholder value.”
Caroline stood.
“Shareholder value was stolen from my family.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“You have no verified claim.”
“I have DNA evidence that Thomas Bennett was my father and partnership documents showing my parents owned the majority of the original company.”
Murmurs spread around the table.
Malcolm’s phone vibrated.
He read the message and smiled.
“Then perhaps we should discuss DNA.”
The boardroom screens activated.
A live video appeared.
Ethan sat inside an unknown room.
Vanessa stood behind him.
“Hello, everyone,” Ethan said.
Lucas rose.
“Where are you?”
“That is not the important question.”
Vanessa held up the paternity folder.
Ethan continued.
“For my entire life, I was told I was Thomas Bennett’s younger son. That identity gave me duties, expectations, and very little actual power.”
“You kidnapped a child because you felt overlooked?” Lucas asked.
“I did not order Lily’s kidnapping.”
“Stop lying.”
“The message account was controlled by Malcolm Crane.”
Every face turned toward Eleanor’s attorney.
Malcolm did not react.
Ethan smiled.
“Surprised, Malcolm?”
Malcolm closed his laptop.
Ethan continued.
“Eleanor planned to use Vanessa as Lily’s guardian. Malcolm planned to remove both Eleanor and Vanessa afterward.”
Lucas stared at Malcolm.
“You are Mercer?”
Malcolm replied calmly.
“I have never used that name.”
Ethan held up a printed DNA report.
“But the paternity files reveal something more interesting.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“Thomas Bennett was not my father.”
Lucas waited.
Ethan smiled.
“My biological father is Malcolm Crane.”
The boardroom erupted.
Malcolm’s face finally changed.
Ethan continued.
“Eleanor and Malcolm had an affair for more than thirty years. Together, they controlled Thomas through blackmail. When Claire discovered the truth, they ordered Shaw to stop her.”
Lucas looked at Malcolm.
“You were at the lake the night Claire crashed.”
Malcolm stood.
“This meeting is adjourned.”
Federal agents blocked the door.
Torres entered.
“No one is leaving.”
Malcolm glanced toward the windows.
Then he pressed a button on his watch.
The lights went out.
An explosion shook the floor below.
Smoke filled the boardroom.
Emergency alarms screamed.
Lucas heard glass break.
When backup power returned, the window behind Malcolm’s seat was open.
A maintenance cable swung outside.
Malcolm was gone.
The video connection remained active.
Ethan laughed.
“He always did know how to make an exit.”
Lucas faced the screen.
“What do you want?”
“The company.”
“It is not yours.”
“Then I begin releasing the names of every politician, judge, and executive who used Northstar.”
“That information should be released.”
Ethan’s smile faded.
“You haven’t seen the final name.”
Vanessa placed a page against the camera.
At the top was a patient record.
HAVEN SUBJECT 24.
Beneath it was a photograph of a young woman.
Rachel Bennett.
Lucas stared at his sister.
Rachel’s face turned white.
“I’ve never been to Northstar.”
The patient status line read:
MEMORY ALTERATION COMPLETED.
Ethan leaned toward the camera.
“Ask Rachel what happened during the missing six months of her life.”
The screen went black.
Rachel gripped the edge of the table.
“I don’t have six missing months.”
Claire looked at her with sudden recognition.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
May you like
Claire’s voice trembled.
“You were at Northstar with me.”
