Chapter 5: The Digital Ghost

The basement of the abandoned auto repair shop smelled of motor oil, rust, and damp concrete. It was here that Marcus, a brilliant former cyber-crime analyst who owed Thomas his life, had set up a makeshift command center powered by a loud, sputtering diesel generator outside.

"Look at this," Marcus muttered, typing furiously on a modified laptop screen glowing with cascading lines of green code. He gestured for Rebecca and Thomas to lean closer over his shoulder. "This isn't just local embezzlement, Becca. Your husband is laundering money for an international logistics syndicate through a shell company called Apex Holdings."

Rebecca stared at the flashing financial ledgers and corporate transfer logs scrolling down the monitor. Names of high-ranking city officials, judges, and corporate executives flashed by in a dizzying sequence.

"Can we push this to the federal authorities?" Thomas asked, leaning heavily on his cane.

"Not yet," Marcus shook his head, his fingers never stopping. "The firewall protecting their primary database is heavily encrypted with military-grade protocols. If we try to breach it directly from here, their automated defense systems will trace our IP address in seconds, and Julian’s private security team will be on our doorstep before we can blink. We need an insider key—a physical access token."

"Where is the token?" Rebecca asked, her eyes narrowing as a cold, daring thought began to form in her mind.

"It's kept in Julian's personal wall safe," Marcus replied, looking up at her with a worried frown. "Right inside his private estate study downtown. The same house you just fled from."

Thomas immediately stiffened, stepping between Rebecca and the desk. "No. Absolutely not. Sending you back into that lions den is suicide."

"Dad, if we don't hit them first, Julian's legal petitions will freeze my medical assets, take Lily away, and lock me in a psychiatric facility by the end of the week," Rebecca countered, her voice ringing with absolute, unyielding clarity. "I have to go back. I know every blind spot in that house."
