Chapter 24: The Abandoned Depot

Twenty minutes later, the sedan slid to a halt inside the cavernous, drafty loading bay of an abandoned railway depot on the outskirts of the industrial district.
The rain drummed a relentless tattoo against the corrugated tin roof high above.
Rebecca lay across the back seat, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

The pain was blinding, consuming every thought, every ounce of strength she had left.
Marcus flung open the back door, rushing in with a pile of clean blankets and towels he had salvaged from the safe house supplies. "Becca, listen to me, I don't know how to deliver a baby! Where is your dad?"
"He's coming... he has to come..." Rebecca whimpered, her hands gripping Marcus's wrists with surprising strength as another massive contraction crested. "Push... I can't stop it, Marcus. The baby is coming right now!"

Marcus swallowed hard, panic evident in his eyes, but he took a deep breath and rolled up his sleeves. "Okay. Okay, deep breaths, Becca. Just listen to my voice. You're strong. You can do this."
Outside the depot doors, heavy footsteps crunched across the gravel, followed by the familiar, weary voice of Thomas Miller calling out into the echoing space. "Marcus! Becca! Are you in here?"
