Chapter 4: Shadows in the Pine

The freezing wind howled through the dense canopy of pine trees, whipping the branches into a frantic frenzy.

Deep in the mountains outside the city, the isolated cabin offered little protection against the biting chill of the night. Inside, the single-room cabin was illuminated only by the faint, flickering glow of a propane heater that sputtered every few minutes, threatening to die out entirely.
Rebecca sat at the scarred wooden kitchen table, her hands wrapped tightly around a mug of lukewarm chamomile tea she couldn't bring herself to drink. Across from her, Thomas was meticulously cleaning his old service revolver, the metallic click-clack of the parts assembling sounding far too loud in the cramped space. In the corner of the room, little Lily was fast asleep on a cot, exhausted from the terror of the past twenty-four hours, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.
"He won't stop at legal threats, Dad," Rebecca said, her voice barely a whisper, carrying the exhaustion of a woman pushed to the absolute edge. "Julian has too much to lose. If the board or the press finds out about those offshore accounts, his entire life collapses. He’ll tear this state apart to find us."
Thomas didn't look up from his weapon. He snapped the cylinder back into place with a definitive click and set the gun down on the table, sliding it just within Rebecca's reach.
"Let him try," Thomas said, his weathered face carved in lines of grim determination. "I spent forty years putting men like him behind bars, Becca. The only difference is this time, it's personal. But Julian isn't stupid. He won't send the police or try a frontal assault here. He operates in the shadows—wealth, influence, corrupted systems. We need to find out who is backing him from the inside."

Rebecca touched her belly, feeling a gentle flutter from her unborn baby. The physical reminder of new life gave her a fierce surge of resolve. "Marcus said he found something encrypted on the server before we got cut off. Digital footprints connecting Julian's campaign funds to a corporate syndicate downtown."
"Then we need that data," Thomas replied, standing up to check the heavy wooden deadbolt on the front door. "And Marcus is our ticket to getting it. But right now, we rest. Tomorrow, the real game begins."
