Chapter 26: The Newborn's Cry

Thomas carefully lifted the tiny, slippery infant into his weathered hands, wrapping the newborn instantly in a clean woolen blanket.

A soft, tearful smile broke across the old detective's rugged face as he handed the crying baby up to Rebecca's chest.

"It's a boy, Becca," Thomas whispered, his voice thick with uncontainable emotion. "He's healthy. He's safe."

Rebecca pulled her newborn son close to her heart, sobbing tears of pure relief and overwhelming love as she kissed his damp forehead. "My sweet boy... Mommy's here. You're safe now."
