The cold morning mist clung to Rebecca's skin like a second layer of ice as she sprinted through the dense pine thicket, her boots sinking into the wet mud.

In her arms, little Lily sobbed uncontrollably, burying her face into her mother's damp jacket. Behind them, muffled shouts rang through the trees—the sound of Julian's mercenaries sweeping the perimeter

Rebecca pressed her hand against her lower abdomen, grimacing as a sharp, painful cramp tore through her muscles. The physical exertion and overwhelming terror were pushing her body past its absolute limit. Seven months pregnant, she knew she couldn't outrun trained operatives for long in the open wilderness.

Suddenly, a pair of headlights cut through the thick fog ahead. A beat-up gray pickup truck slid to a halt on the logging road, and the passenger door flew open.

"Get in! Move, move, move!" Marcus yelled, leaning across the seat, his face pale with panic.

Rebecca didn't waste a second. She scrambled into the back seat, pulling Lily in right behind her as Marcus slammed the accelerator, kicking up a shower of gravel and mud just as two armed figures burst out of the tree line behind them, firing wildly into the empty air.

As the truck sped down the winding mountain road toward the city, Rebecca slumped against the seat, gasping for breath, her hands trembling uncontrollably. They had escaped the cabin, but they were now entirely out of time.
