Chapter 23: Breaking Through
Marcus slammed his foot down on the accelerator.
The sedan roared forward like a wounded beast, smashing directly through the gap between the two barricading SUVs with a deafening screech of metal on metal.
Bullets punched through the rear window, shattering the glass into a million glittering pieces that rained down over the back seat. Rebecca screamed, shielding her protruding belly with her arms as the car fishtailed violently before straightening out on the open highway.
Looking back through the shattered rear window, Rebecca saw Thomas standing in the middle of the road, exchanging fire with the remaining guards until he dived gracefully behind a concrete barrier just as Marcus sped out of sight into the dark rainy night.

"Dad! We left him behind!" Rebecca cried out, tears mixing with the rain on her face.
"He told us to drive!" Marcus shouted back, his eyes glued to the dark road ahead. "He's going to meet us at the abandoned warehouse district. Just hold on, Becca—the baby's coming!"
