Chapter 22: The Road Blockade

The sedan tore down the coastal highway, the windshield wipers slapping frantically against the heavy sheets of rain.

In the back seat, Rebecca writhed in agony, her fingers gripping the fabric of the car seat as wave after wave of intense contractions crashed over her body.

"Hold on, Becca, just breathe," Thomas said, pressing a clean handkerchief against her forehead, his voice tight with worry despite his calm exterior. "We're almost to the safe house."

Suddenly, Marcus slammed on the brakes, sending the car sliding sideways across the wet asphalt.

Ahead of them, two black SUV's blocked the entire two-lane highway, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright in the storm. Standing beside the vehicles were four of Julian's armed mercenaries, their weapons raised.

"We're trapped," Marcus whispered, his hands freezing on the steering wheel.

Thomas’s eyes narrowed. He checked the magazine of his revolver. "Not yet we're not."

Before the mercenaries could open fire, Thomas kicked open the passenger door, rolling out onto the wet pavement and returning suppressing fire that forced the men to scramble for cover behind their SUV doors.

"Marcus, drive through them! Now!" Thomas roared over the sound of gunfire.
