Chapter 9 - THE WATER UNDER THE FLOOR

Michael moved before Daniel finished smiling.
He vaulted the boathouse railing and hit the water feet first.
The cold punched the breath from his lungs.
Margaret's chair had disappeared beneath the surface.
He dove.
Dark water swallowed everything.
For one terrifying second, he could not find her.
Then his hand struck wood.
He followed the chair leg downward.
Margaret was still strapped in.
Her eyes were open.
Her hair floated around her face.
Michael grabbed the rope at her chest and pulled.
It did not move.
Above him, muffled gunfire cracked through the water.
His lungs began to burn.
He reached for the buckle behind the chair.
Nothing.
A shape hit the water beside him.
Emily.
She swam straight to Margaret's wrists.
Michael pointed toward the straps.
Emily shook her head.
Then she pulled a small folding knife from her shoe.
Michael would have asked why a maid carried a knife in her shoe if he had been capable of speaking underwater.
Emily sawed through the wrist binding.
Michael cut the chest strap with his own pocket blade.
Margaret's body floated free.
They kicked upward together.
Michael broke the surface first.
Air tore into his lungs.
Emily surfaced beside him with Margaret.
"Dock."
Michael wrapped one arm around the nanny.
A bullet struck the water three feet away.
Dawson shouted from the shore.
"Move."
Michael dragged Margaret toward the ladder.
Emily climbed first and pulled from above.
Dawson's men returned fire into the trees.
Daniel was gone.
Michael barely cared.
Margaret did not appear to be breathing.
They lowered her onto the dock.
Emily ripped the tape from her mouth.
"Margaret."
No response.
Emily checked quickly.
"She has a pulse."
Michael dropped beside her.
"Come on."
Emily cleared Margaret's airway and began rescue breathing while Dawson called for medical support.
Seconds stretched.
Then Margaret coughed.
Water spilled from her mouth.
She rolled onto her side, choking and gasping.
Michael sat back on the wet boards.
His hands shook violently.
Emily kept one palm between Margaret's shoulders.
"Slow."
Margaret coughed again.
Her eyes opened.
The first person she looked for was not Michael.
It was Emily.
"He looks like him."
Her voice was broken.
Emily leaned closer.
"Daniel?"
Margaret nodded.
"But it wasn't always Daniel."
Michael stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret looked toward the trees as if expecting the man to reappear.
"Sometimes it was Frank."
Dawson came closer.
"You need to explain that."
Margaret shivered violently.
"I can't tell them apart from a distance."
Emily wrapped her own coat around her.
"Don't force it."
Michael disagreed.
"Margaret, who told you to keep Noah's room at eighty degrees?"
"Dr. Mercer."
"Who told you Mercer was coming?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Frank."
Michael's face went hard.
"Frank called you?"
"Not called."
She swallowed.
"He came to the kitchen."
"When?"
"Yesterday afternoon."
Michael looked at Dawson.
"Frank was with me yesterday afternoon."
Dawson nodded slowly.
"From one until four."
Margaret shook her head.
"I saw him at two-thirty."
Emily and Michael exchanged a look.
Daniel.
"What did he say?"
"That Dr. Mercer was going to test a new sleep monitor on Noah."
Michael's eyes darkened.
"And you believed that?"
Margaret began to cry.
"He knew everything."
"What everything?"
"Noah's schedule."
"That is easy to learn."
"He knew the name Claire used to call him before he was born."
Michael froze.
Only three people knew that name.
Michael.
Claire.
And Frank.
Before Noah was born, Claire called him Bean because an early ultrasound made him look like one.
Michael had threatened anyone who repeated it after the birth.
"What name?"
Emily asked.
Michael answered without looking at her.
"Bean."
Margaret nodded.
"He said Claire wanted Bean protected."
Michael's face drained.
Daniel could have learned security procedures.
He could have cloned access.
He could have studied Frank's posture and voice.
But private language inside a marriage was harder.
Michael looked at Dawson.
"Call the hospital."
Dawson did.
Frank was still there.
Guarded.
Verified by two nurses and hospital security.
Michael stared at the water where Claire's brass key had disappeared.
"Then Daniel learned it from Frank."
Emily shook her head.
"Or from Claire."
Michael looked at her sharply.
"Claire would not tell him."
"If she knew him before she knew he was dangerous, she might have."
Michael did not want that possibility.
He wanted Daniel to be a monster who had always been outside the walls.
Claire's recordings were already teaching him the monster had spent years inside their history.
Dawson's phone rang.
His expression changed as he listened.
"What?"
Michael demanded.
Dawson ended the call.
"We found Dr. Mercer."
Michael stood.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"He walked into a police station in Cambridge ten minutes ago."
Emily stared.
"After leaving blood in his car?"
Dawson nodded.
"He says the blood wasn't his."
Michael's voice became cold.
"Whose was it?"
"He won't say."
"Did he confess?"
"Not exactly."
"What did he say?"
Dawson looked at Margaret.
"He says he wants protective custody before he tells us who paid him to use the patch."
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Good."
Emily looked at him.
"That sounded dangerous."
"It was meant to."
"Michael."
"He put a chemical device on my son."
"And if you scare him into silence, we learn nothing."
Michael stared at her.
"You seem very comfortable telling me what not to do."
Emily stood.
Water ran from her clothes.
"Someone has to be."
Dawson looked away.
Michael almost answered.
Then Margaret grabbed Emily's wrist.
"The man in the boathouse said something before you arrived."
Emily crouched.
"What?"
Margaret looked at Michael.
"He said Claire's real key was not metal."
Michael felt a chill unrelated to the water.
"What was it?"
"He said it was something Michael had been carrying since the funeral."
Michael stared at her.
His hand moved unconsciously to his chest.
Beneath his wet shirt, on a chain beside the key he had thrown away, hung Claire's wedding ring.
He had worn it since the day they buried her.
Emily saw the movement.
So did Dawson.
Michael pulled the chain free.
Claire's simple platinum band rested against his palm.
Inside the ring was an engraving he had read a thousand times.
STAY UNTIL THE LIGHT.
Emily reached toward it.
"May I?"
Michael hesitated.
Then gave it to her.
She turned it beneath the gray morning light.
There was a tiny seam inside the band.
Michael had never noticed it.
Emily pressed with one fingernail.
A section of the inner metal clicked open.
Inside was a micro-storage chip.
Dawson exhaled.
"That's the key."
Michael stared at Claire's ring.
Then a new thought hit him.
"Daniel knew I was carrying it."
Emily looked toward the empty tree line.
"Which means he did not really want the brass key."
Michael's face changed.
"He wanted to see whether I had found the real one yet."
Dawson swore softly.
They had walked into North Cove believing they were testing Daniel.
Daniel had been testing them.
Emily placed the ring back in Michael's hand.
"Now he knows."
Michael closed his fingers around it.
"Then we stop letting him choose the next move."
Margaret made a weak sound.
"You don't understand."
Michael looked at her.
She was crying again.
"What?"
"He said if you opened the ring, someone at the hospital would die."
Michael's face emptied.
His phone rang at the exact same moment.
Hospital security.
He answered.
A voice shouted through alarms.
"Mr. Carter, we have a lockdown."
Michael's heart stopped.
"Noah?"
The guard hesitated.
"Noah is missing."
While the ambulance team wrapped Margaret in heated blankets, Emily crouched beside the boathouse floor and examined the mechanism that had dropped the chair.
The trap was crude compared with the digital systems used elsewhere.
A winch.
A release pin.
A remote receiver.
Michael stared at the dark opening in the floor.
"He wanted us to watch her drown."
Emily shook her head.
"He wanted you to decide whether the key mattered more."
"Same result."
"Not to him."
Michael looked at her.
Emily pointed toward the camera above the pulley.
"He recorded the choice."
Dawson climbed a ladder and removed the device.
The memory card contained footage from several earlier tests.
Empty chair.
Sandbags.
One of Daniel's men timing the drop.
Then a final clip showed Daniel standing alone beneath the camera.
He looked directly into the lens.
"People believe character is what they do when watched."
Daniel smiled in the recording.
"I prefer what they do when they think one life can purchase another thing they love."
Michael stopped the video.
"I am going to kill him."
Emily looked at him.
"That is exactly the reaction he wants documented."
"I am not concerned with his artistic vision."
"You should be concerned with letting him write your part."
Michael stared at the water.
Again, Claire's warning echoed beneath Emily's words.
Do not react before you understand.
Michael had always considered hesitation a weakness in dangerous moments.
Now he began to see the difference between hesitation and refusal to be manipulated.
Dawson searched the boathouse control box.
One receiver channel was still active.
It had connected to a second device moments before Margaret dropped.
The signal originated near Boston.
Michael's face tightened.
"Hospital."
Dawson could not confirm, but the timing matched.
Daniel had been coordinating the boathouse and the move against Noah simultaneously.
That meant a team.
Not one mad brother moving through shadows.
A network.
Blue Harbor had taught him how to build one.
Margaret grabbed Michael's sleeve as the paramedics lifted her.
"He kept asking whether Frank would come."
Michael looked at her.
"Daniel?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He said brothers always arrive when you make the wound old enough."
Michael looked at Frank's name spelled by her fingers.
Daniel did not just want the Lantern.
He wanted Frank pulled into the open.
The family war between the Morrow brothers was becoming the engine of everything happening around Noah.
May you like
Michael decided then that he would not let his son become the battlefield for another family's unfinished history.
