Chapter 18 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Daniel gave Emily three minutes.

Michael spent the first thirty seconds studying every movement around the room.

Six men.

Two near the server racks.

One beside the emergency exit.

Three behind Daniel.

All armed.

Dawson stood slightly behind Michael.

Frank stood to Emily's left.

Nobody had been searched because Daniel wanted them armed.

Michael understood why.

Weapons created choices.

Choices created mistakes.

Daniel believed he could predict all of them.

"Two minutes and thirty seconds."

Emily ignored him.

She placed the red music box beside the central console.

The screen requested a second sequence.

The twelve digits had opened the door.

They did not open the files.

Thomas Parker had built another layer.

Emily wound the music box again.

The melody started.

Daniel watched with hungry impatience.

Michael watched Daniel.

Frank watched the detonator.

Dawson watched everyone.

Emily listened.

The melody played once.

Then twice.

She frowned.

"There is no second sequence."

Daniel's smile vanished slightly.

"There is."

"No."

"Thomas told Robert there were two."

"Robert lied."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Emily looked at the screen.

"The second key isn't numeric."

"Then what is it?"

She looked at the music box.

"A name."

Michael stared.

Emily turned the box over.

Inside the secret compartment, beneath the coordinate strip, was a line she had not noticed before because it was etched into dark wood.

A CHILD IS NOT A NUMBER.

Emily's face changed.

"My father hated how Blue Harbor reduced children to patient IDs."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What name?"

Emily looked at him.

"You don't know."

For the first time, Daniel's confidence cracked.

"Open it."

Emily thought of Thomas.

Her father never called her Emily when they played the music-box game.

He called her Sparrow.

Because she used to sing before she could speak clearly.

She typed SPARROW.

The console flashed red.

Wrong.

Daniel smiled again.

"One minute."

Emily closed her eyes.

Not her name.

A child's name.

Thomas built the Lantern after Blue Harbor.

After the trials.

After he met families whose children were reduced to codes.

He once told Emily about a baby whose parents never learned why she died.

He called her the reason he stopped staying quiet.

Emily opened her eyes.

"Lily."

Frank looked at her.

"Who is Lily?"

"Patient 06B."

The same code on Noah's patch.

Emily typed LILY.

The screen went black.

Daniel lifted the remote.

Then thousands of file names appeared.

The Lantern opened.

Emily stopped breathing.

Folders were organized by patient name.

Not numbers.

Real names.

Dates of birth.

Parents.

Treatments.

Adverse events.

Payments.

Correspondence.

Everything Blue Harbor had erased from official records lived here.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Beautiful."

Emily looked at him with disgust.

"You are looking at harmed children."

"I am looking at leverage."

Michael's face hardened.

"And that is why you will never understand the difference between power and ownership."

Daniel laughed.

"You own half of New England and want to lecture me about ownership."

"I own companies."

Michael looked at the names on the screen.

"Not people."

Daniel's smile faded.

"Everyone owns people."

"Employers own fear."

"Parents own guilt."

"Governments own consequences."

"I am simply honest about the transaction."

Frank spoke quietly.

"That is what Dad used to say."

Daniel looked at him.

Something ugly passed between them.

Michael noticed.

"Your father taught you this."

Frank answered without looking away from Daniel.

"Our father taught us that every person had a price."

Daniel smiled.

"Francis pretended he disagreed."

"Then he spent twenty years proving Father right."

Frank's jaw tightened.

"I spent twenty years trying not to become him."

Daniel laughed.

"You poisoned a baby to steal a key."

Silence hit the room.

Frank did not defend himself.

Daniel looked at Michael.

"See?"

"That is the difference between us."

Michael stared.

Daniel spread his hands.

"I do terrible things because they work."

"Frank does terrible things and then calls them protection."

"Which one should disgust you more?"

Michael looked at Frank.

"Both."

Daniel's smile thinned.

"Good answer."

Emily moved through the archive.

She searched Claire Carter.

A folder appeared.

Michael saw it.

"Open it."

Daniel stepped closer.

"No."

Michael raised his pistol.

The guards raised theirs.

Daniel lifted the remote.

Everyone froze.

"The point of this evening is that I make the rules."

Michael looked at him.

"You kidnapped my son."

"Technically Frank kidnapped him from my men."

"You tried."

"Yes."

Daniel smiled.

"And now he is safe enough that you can think clearly."

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"You left the device at Thomas's house to keep him in play."

"Exactly."

"What does it do?"

"Mostly nothing."

Dawson frowned.

Daniel laughed.

"Fear is more efficient when you let people imagine the mechanism."

Michael thought of Eric believing the pacifier could kill Noah remotely.

The pattern repeated.

Daniel did not need every threat to be real.

He needed people to behave as though it were.

Emily opened Claire's folder anyway.

Daniel stepped toward her.

Frank moved between them.

Daniel looked at his brother.

"Do you really want to die for a maid?"

Frank's expression was flat.

"You still don't see people until they become useful."

Daniel's eyes shifted to Emily.

"She is useful."

Frank shook his head.

"That is not what I said."

Michael almost laughed despite everything.

Claire's folder opened.

A timeline filled the screen.

VESPER EXPOSURE 1.

VESPER EXPOSURE 2.

VESPER EXPOSURE 3.

Sixteen entries.

Michael felt the room disappear around him.

Emily clicked the first.

A procurement record appeared.

Waltham Biodesign.

Requested under Robert Collins's old credentials.

Paid through Carter Foundation health consulting.

Authorized through Colin Vale's finance path.

Delivered to a private mailbox.

Recipient name blank.

The second file included a surveillance image.

A man collected the package.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Frank's face.

Michael looked at Frank.

Frank stared at the image.

"That is Daniel."

Daniel laughed.

"How convenient."

Emily zoomed in.

The man's left hand held the package.

No scar on the palm.

Frank lifted his own scarred hand.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"There."

Emily pointed.

"Daniel."

Michael looked at him.

Daniel shrugged.

"Fine."

The casualness made Michael's blood boil.

"You poisoned Claire."

"I educated her."

Michael moved forward.

Dawson caught his arm.

Daniel lifted the remote.

"Careful."

Michael stared at him.

"Why?"

Daniel tilted his head.

"Because she thought she was smarter than everyone protecting you."

"She was."

"Often."

Daniel smiled.

"But intelligence creates confidence."

"Confidence creates patterns."

"I needed her uncertain."

Michael's voice shook with rage.

"So you drugged her."

"I gave her reasons to doubt her memory."

"You made her think she was losing her mind."

"For a while."

Emily's face tightened with disgust.

Daniel looked at Michael.

"You helped."

The words hit exactly where he intended.

Michael did not move.

Daniel continued.

"You told her she was tired."

"You told her she was overreacting."

"You told her to stop chasing ghosts."

Michael remembered every sentence.

Daniel smiled.

"I barely had to do anything after that."

Frank lunged.

Two guards hit him before he reached Daniel.

Dawson moved.

Guns rose.

Daniel held up the remote.

"Enough."

Frank was forced to his knees.

Blood ran from his mouth.

Daniel crouched in front of him.

"That struck a nerve."

Frank looked up.

"You wanted Michael to blame himself."

"Of course."

"Why?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because guilt makes rich men generous."

Michael's voice came from behind him.

"You never asked me for money."

Daniel turned.

"I wanted something better."

"Carter infrastructure."

Michael understood.

"Shipping."

"Data."

"Security."

"Political access."

Daniel nodded.

"An empire already built."

"Claire was in the way."

"Claire saw ownership where you saw friendship."

Michael looked at Frank.

Daniel continued.

"She knew Francis was compromised by love for you."

"She knew Colin was compromised by money."

"She knew Mercer was compromised by reputation."

"She almost understood that all I needed was to pull each thread."

Emily's fingers moved across the console while Daniel talked.

She opened a folder labeled DISTRIBUTION.

Inside were transmission tools Thomas Parker had built.

One command could copy the archive to hundreds of destinations.

But the destination list was encrypted.

Emily kept reading.

Daniel noticed.

"Stop."

She looked at him.

"You wanted it open."

"I wanted access."

"You have it."

"I want control."

Emily almost smiled.

"There it is."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Michael understood what she was doing.

Keeping Daniel talking.

Making him step closer.

Dawson understood too.

Frank slowly shifted one knee beneath him.

Daniel pointed the remote toward Emily.

"Move away."

She did not.

"What is the price?"

Daniel looked at Michael.

"Excuse me?"

Emily gestured toward the archive.

"You said everything has a price."

"What is yours?"

Daniel laughed.

"I am not for sale."

"Then your father's theory failed."

His smile disappeared.

Frank looked at Emily.

Michael saw approval in his face.

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Do not play therapist with me."

"I'm a maid."

Emily's voice was calm.

"Remember?"

Daniel's eyes sharpened.

"I remember exactly what you are."

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"People like you never do."

Daniel's hand tightened around the remote.

Michael spoke.

"She is right."

Daniel turned.

Michael continued.

"You studied Frank."

"You studied Claire."

"You studied me."

"You built your entire life around predicting people you thought were simpler than you."

Daniel smiled slowly.

"And yet here you are."

"Yes."

Michael looked at the screens.

"Standing inside the room you spent fifteen years trying to open."

Daniel's expression changed slightly.

Michael saw it.

"You could not do it without Emily."

"You could not find the real key without Claire."

"You could not reach my son without Frank's plan."

"You could not build the formula without Eric."

"You could not move the money without Colin."

Michael stepped closer.

"You are not a mastermind."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You are a parasite with excellent timing."

Dawson almost smiled.

Daniel raised the remote.

"Careful."

Michael kept walking.

"There is the remote again."

"Your one original idea."

Daniel's face twisted.

Emily pressed a key on the console.

A small status box appeared.

DESTINATION LIST DECRYPTING.

Daniel heard the beep.

He turned toward Emily.

That was the mistake.

Frank drove his shoulder into Daniel's knees.

The remote flew from Daniel's hand.

Dawson fired at the nearest guard.

The underground room exploded into motion.

Michael dove toward the remote.

A bullet struck the console.

Emily dropped behind it.

Frank and Daniel crashed into the floor.

The red lights along the ceiling began flashing.

A computerized voice spoke.

MANUAL DETONATION CIRCUIT ARMED.

Daniel laughed from beneath Frank.

May you like

"Too late."
