Chapter 7 - THE MAN IN NOAH'S ROOM

Michael ran out of locker 317 before the call ended.
Dawson and the guards followed.
Frank stayed one step behind him despite having no weapon.
"Get hospital security now."
Dawson was already calling.
Michael held his phone to his ear.
"Emily."
No answer.
The line remained open.
He heard a cart crash.
Then a woman screamed.
Then the phone disconnected.
Michael stopped in the marina parking lot.
"Helicopter."
Dawson looked toward the sky.
"Twenty minutes out."
"Car."
"Forty-five minutes."
Michael grabbed Dawson's jacket.
"Then make it twenty."
They made it thirty-one.
Michael spent every second watching the hospital security feed on a tablet.
At 6:17 a.m., a man in blue surgical scrubs had entered Noah's private wing using Dr. Mercer's credentials.
He wore a mask and cap.
His face was invisible.
At 6:19, two cameras went black.
At 6:20, Emily stepped into the hallway.
At 6:21, the feed returned.
Emily was gone.
The man's scrubs were gone.
Noah remained in his room.
Michael could not decide which fact frightened him more.
When the SUV reached the hospital, he was out before it stopped.
Security tried to slow him.
Dawson handled them.
Michael reached Noah's floor and found six nurses, three guards, and a hospital administrator crowded near the private room.
"Where is my son?"
A doctor stepped forward.
"Inside. Stable."
Michael pushed past him.
Noah lay exactly where he had been.
The ventilator hummed.
The monitors blinked.
His tiny hand rested open against the blanket.
Michael touched it.
Warm.
Alive.
He bent and kissed his son's forehead.
Then he stood.
"Where is Emily?"
Nobody answered.
Michael turned.
"Where is she?"
A nurse pointed toward a treatment room.
Michael crossed the corridor.
Emily sat on an examination table with blood on her collar.
A doctor was placing two stitches above her eyebrow.
Michael stopped in the doorway.
She looked at him.
"You're late."
Air left his chest.
"What happened?"
"He hit me with an oxygen cylinder."
"Who?"
"The man using Mercer's badge."
Frank entered behind Michael.
Emily's face changed.
"Why is he still here?"
"Long story."
"I hate long stories."
The doctor finished the stitch.
"She needs imaging."
Emily slid off the table.
"Later."
"Miss Parker."
"My head has survived worse."
Michael looked at the blood on her shirt.
"You are getting the scan."
Emily stared at him.
"You are not my employer right now."
"Technically I am."
"Then I quit."
Frank almost laughed.
Michael looked at him.
Frank stopped.
Emily walked toward Noah's room.
Michael followed.
"What did the man want?"
"The patch."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"Toxicology has it."
"He didn't know that."
"How do you know?"
"Because he asked me where I hid it."
Frank leaned against the wall.
"Voice?"
Emily looked at him.
"Not the caller."
Michael stopped.
"You're sure?"
"The phone voice was distorted, but the rhythm was different."
"Meaning there are at least two people."
"Or one person using recordings."
Frank nodded.
"Good."
Emily looked at him with open disgust.
"Do not compliment me."
Frank accepted that.
They entered Noah's room.
Emily checked the tubing herself.
Michael watched her.
"Why did he leave Noah untouched?"
Emily looked at him.
"Because maybe Noah was never the target."
Michael's face hardened.
"He was poisoned."
"Yes."
"That makes him a target."
"Not necessarily the final one."
Frank understood first.
"A trigger."
Emily nodded.
Michael looked between them.
"Explain."
Emily lowered her voice.
"What happened after Noah collapsed?"
"Paramedics came."
"And?"
"The house filled with emergency personnel."
"And?"
Michael's eyes changed.
"Security focus moved to the nursery."
Emily nodded.
"Your roof was opened for the helicopter."
Frank added quietly.
"Staff were pulled from lower levels."
Michael thought of the wine room.
"Someone used Noah to empty the house."
Emily looked at him.
"Or to make sure nobody noticed someone accessing Claire's room."
Frank's expression tightened.
"The hidden camera storage card was removed during the emergency."
Michael felt sick.
"They nearly killed my son for a distraction."
Emily's answer was colder.
"Or they believed the dose would only make him sick enough to cause one."
Michael stared at her.
"That is supposed to make me feel better?"
"No."
She looked at Noah.
"It is supposed to tell us the person who planned it may not be the same person who changed the formula."
Frank nodded slowly.
"One planned a controlled event."
"And someone else made it lethal."
Michael looked at Frank.
"You sound very comfortable with that theory."
"Because it explains the contradiction."
"Which contradiction?"
"Why someone smart enough to erase footage and clone access used a patch that left physical evidence."
Emily finished the thought.
"Because the original planner expected the patch to be removed later by someone inside the house."
Michael looked at her.
"Margaret."
Emily nodded.
"She was supposed to take it off."
Frank's eyes narrowed.
"But she didn't."
"Maybe she panicked."
"Or someone stopped her."
Michael remembered Margaret staring at Frank after Noah collapsed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
He turned to Dawson.
"Get Margaret on video."
Dawson called the mansion.
No answer from the breakfast room guard.
He called again.
Still nothing.
His face changed.
"Call the security desk."
A different guard answered.
Dawson listened.
"What do you mean she isn't there?"
Michael stepped closer.
Dawson put the call on speaker.
"Sir, we had a power fault in the west hall."
"How long?"
"Ninety seconds."
Frank swore.
"Margaret?"
"Gone."
Michael's voice became dangerous.
"The guards?"
"One unconscious."
"Other?"
"Missing."
Emily closed her eyes.
Michael looked at Frank.
"Your people are very good at disappearing when the lights go out."
Frank ignored the insult.
"Search the property."
Dawson relayed the order.
Michael's phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived from an unknown number.
Margaret sat tied to a chair.
Her mouth was taped.
Behind her, a round window showed gray water.
Emily leaned closer.
"That is a boathouse."
Michael zoomed in.
A handwritten sign hung behind Margaret.
ONE LIFE FOR ONE KEY.
Frank looked at Claire's brass key in Michael's hand.
"They know you have it."
A second message arrived.
NORTH COVE. ONE HOUR. COME WITHOUT FRANK.
Michael looked at Frank.
"Convenient again."
Frank said nothing.
Emily took the phone.
She enlarged the image until Margaret's bound hands filled the screen.
"Wait."
Michael looked at her.
"What?"
Emily pointed.
Margaret's left hand was clenched.
Two fingers were extended against the chair leg.
Then one.
Then two.
"It looks random," Michael said.
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Because Margaret taught Noah's baby sign routines in sequences."
Frank leaned closer.
"What is she saying?"
Emily studied the fingers.
Her face changed.
"She is spelling a name."
Michael's heart hammered.
"Whose?"
Emily looked up.
"Frank."
Before the call about Margaret came, Emily walked Michael through the hospital room a second time.
She made him look at what the intruder had touched rather than what he had failed to take.
The oxygen cabinet had been opened.
The supply drawer had been disturbed.
A packet of sterile wipes had been removed and placed back upside down.
Michael frowned.
"Why does that matter?"
Emily pointed to the drawer seal.
"Because whoever searched here knew medical supplies well enough to make the room look untouched, but not well enough to remember how this unit stocks them."
The nurse confirmed it.
The intruder had training, but probably not recent hospital experience.
Dawson added that the man had bypassed two security checkpoints without threatening anyone.
He knew which doors would open after the fire alarm and which would stay locked.
Michael looked at Frank.
"Daniel learned systems from you."
Frank shook his head.
"We learned from the same man."
"Your father."
"Yes."
Emily studied Frank.
"Did Vincent Morrow teach you to use emergencies as cover?"
Frank's face hardened.
"He taught us that people reveal priorities under pressure."
Michael looked at Noah.
"Daniel used my priority as a hallway pass."
Frank said nothing.
Emily noticed a disposable glove in the corner beneath a rolling cart.
Hospital staff used blue gloves on the unit.
This one was black.
Dawson bagged it.
A faint powder marked the thumb.
"Lab residue?"
Emily asked.
"Could be."
Michael looked toward the corridor where the intruder had vanished.
Every clue seemed to point toward people who understood both laboratories and security.
Blue Harbor had always lived between professions.
That was why no single investigator had seen the entire structure.
Michael began to understand why Claire built separate caches instead of one complete file.
A complete truth in one place could be stolen.
A divided truth forced the thief to reveal himself while gathering it.
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
"Claire knew someone would come for the pieces."
"Yes."
"So she made the pieces into traps."
Emily nodded.
"Thomas did the same thing."
Michael looked at the hidden backing strip still in Emily's pocket.
"Then maybe we stop thinking like people protecting evidence."
"And start thinking like people watching who reaches for it."
For the first time, Emily smiled at him with something close to approval.
"Now you're useful."
Michael almost objected.
May you like
Then the call came saying Margaret was gone.
