Chapter 16 - THE FILE WITH MICHAEL'S NAME

Michael stared at Frank for so long that nobody moved.

Then he laughed.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief sharpened into something dangerous.

"You thought I drugged my wife."

Frank remained seated and handcuffed.

"I thought someone used your access."

"That is not what you said."

"You asked who I suspected."

"And you said me."

Frank looked at him.

"Because the evidence said you."

Michael's fist tightened.

Emily stepped between them before he moved.

"What evidence?"

Frank looked past her.

"Claire's supplements were stored in Michael's private kitchen drawer."

Michael frowned.

"So?"

"Only two biometrics opened it."

"Mine and Claire's."

"Exactly."

Michael's face hardened.

Frank continued.

"The cabinet log showed your access on every day matching the highest Vesper exposure."

Michael stared at him.

"I never opened that drawer."

"Claire said the same thing."

"You asked her?"

"Yes."

"Behind my back."

"Yes."

Michael looked ready to strike him again.

Emily held one hand against Michael's chest.

"Wait."

He looked down at her hand.

She did not remove it.

"The cloned ring."

Michael stopped.

Emily turned toward Frank.

"If Daniel could clone Michael's biometric token now, he could have done it before Claire died."

Frank nodded.

"That became my theory."

"Then why suspect Michael?"

"Because the cloned access was not the only evidence."

Michael's face went cold.

"What else?"

Frank looked toward Claire's notebook.

"A payment."

"From whom?"

"Michael's personal account."

Michael laughed bitterly.

"To whom?"

"Waltham Biodesign."

Emily stared.

"For Vesper?"

"The invoice was disguised as a medical consulting fee."

Michael shook his head.

"I did not authorize it."

"Your digital signature did."

"Cloned."

"Probably."

Michael stared.

"Probably."

Frank's expression did not change.

"I did not know that when I found it."

Michael turned away.

The idea that Claire might have spent her final weeks wondering whether her husband was drugging her made him physically sick.

"Did she believe it?"

Frank said nothing.

Michael turned back.

"Did Claire think I was poisoning her?"

Frank's voice softened.

"For two days."

Michael closed his eyes.

Emily looked at Frank with open anger.

"Why would you tell him that now?"

"Because Daniel will."

Michael opened his eyes.

Frank continued.

"Daniel built the evidence for a reason."

"He wanted Claire isolated from Michael."

"He wanted Michael doubting Claire."

"He wanted both of them leaning on me because I controlled security."

Emily stared at him.

"And did they?"

Frank looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Michael understood.

Daniel had not simply attacked their family.

He had changed the way they trusted each other.

That was a different kind of violence.

Harder to prove.

Easier to hide.

"When did Claire stop believing I did it?"

Frank looked at him.

"When you were in Tokyo during one exposure date."

Michael remembered the trip.

Claire had called him at three in the morning for no reason.

He had been irritated.

She had asked whether he missed her.

He told her he had a meeting in four hours.

That memory hurt now.

"Why didn't she tell me then?"

"Because by then she knew someone could fabricate your access."

"And she thought telling me would force the person to escalate."

Michael looked at Claire's ring.

"She was right."

Frank nodded.

"Yes."

Dawson entered with a laptop.

"We decoded another folder from locker 317."

Michael looked at him.

"What folder?"

"PAYMENTS."

Frank's face tightened.

Dawson placed the laptop on the table.

A network of transfers filled the screen.

Money moved through charities, consulting firms, medical vendors, and shell companies.

Some paths ended at Blue Harbor doctors.

Others ended at politicians.

Others ended at Carter subcontractors.

Michael found his own name repeatedly.

Not as a recipient.

As a source.

Millions had moved through entities he owned.

"How much?"

Dawson swallowed.

"At least eighteen million over twelve years."

Michael stared at Frank.

"You said the old shipping route was the extent of Carter involvement."

Frank's expression darkened.

"That is what I believed."

"You expect me to believe eighteen million dollars moved through my companies without either of us seeing it?"

Frank looked at the screen.

"No."

Michael blinked.

"Then what are you saying?"

"Someone inside your finance structure has been laundering Blue Harbor money."

Dawson pointed at the authorizations.

"Signatures rotate."

"Some are Michael's."

"Some are Frank's."

"Some belong to executives who left years ago."

Emily looked at him.

"Dead identities again."

Dawson nodded.

"And one active person."

Michael looked at the screen.

"Who?"

Dawson opened a file.

COLIN VALE.

Michael went still.

Colin was Carter Group's chief financial officer.

He had been with Michael for fourteen years.

He attended Claire's funeral.

He stood beside Frank at Noah's christening.

He was Noah's godfather.

"Where is Colin now?"

Dawson checked.

"New York."

Michael's face hardened.

"Verify."

Dawson called Colin's office.

No answer.

His assistant said he had canceled morning meetings due to illness.

His apartment building had not seen him since the previous afternoon.

His company phone was off.

Michael's stomach tightened.

"Track his car."

"Already doing it."

Emily looked at Frank.

"Did you suspect Colin?"

Frank shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because Claire cleared him."

Michael looked up.

"When?"

"Three months before she died."

"How?"

"She traced a series of payments and concluded his credentials were being used while he was physically elsewhere."

Emily frowned.

"Then why is he active now?"

Dawson looked at the file.

"Maybe Claire was wrong."

Michael's phone rang.

Colin Vale.

Everyone froze.

Michael answered on speaker.

"Where are you?"

Colin's breathing came fast.

"Michael, listen to me."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Then this will be a short conversation."

"Frank is lying to you."

Frank's face did not change.

Michael looked at him.

"About what?"

"Everything."

Michael almost laughed.

"Be more specific."

Colin continued.

"Claire found the laundering because Frank built it."

Frank shook his head once.

Michael's voice stayed calm.

"Proof?"

"I have copies."

"Where?"

"Safe."

"Where are you?"

"I told you I can't say."

Michael looked at Dawson.

Dawson was tracing the call.

Colin continued.

"Frank authorized Lullaby."

"I know."

Silence.

"You know?"

"Keep going."

Colin's breathing changed.

"He ordered the medical event."

"I know."

"He knew Daniel was alive."

"I know."

"Then why is he breathing?"

Michael looked at Frank.

"Excellent question."

Frank almost smiled.

Colin's voice sharpened.

"Michael, Claire came to me two days before she died."

Michael went still.

"Why?"

"She gave me a sealed envelope."

"What was in it?"

"A list of people she believed were compromised."

"Name one."

Colin hesitated.

Michael's face hardened.

"Name one."

"Frank."

No surprise.

"Another."

Colin was silent.

Dawson held up one finger.

Trace nearly complete.

Michael waited.

"Me."

Colin finally said.

Everyone froze.

"Claire put your name on the compromised list?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Colin's voice shook.

"Because I helped Frank move the money."

Michael felt something inside him go cold.

"How much did you know?"

"Not enough at first."

Michael looked at Emily.

The same excuse again.

One piece.

One compromise.

One person telling himself he had not built the machine.

"What did you know later?"

Colin began to cry.

"Enough."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Did you drug Claire?"

"No."

"Did you help Daniel?"

"No."

"Did you know Lullaby involved Noah?"

A pause.

Too long.

Michael's eyes opened.

"Colin."

"I thought it was a false alarm."

Michael's face became empty.

"You knew."

"Frank said Noah would be safe."

Michael looked at Frank.

Frank lowered his eyes.

Colin continued desperately.

"Daniel changed it."

"I didn't know."

"I swear I didn't know."

Michael's voice was quiet.

"Where are you?"

Dawson pointed to the screen.

Trace complete.

Rockport.

Near the lighthouse.

Michael stared at the location.

Colin spoke again.

"Daniel has the Lantern entrance open."

Emily went still.

"How?"

"He has Claire's half of the sequence."

Michael gripped the ring.

"Impossible."

"No."

Colin's voice dropped.

"He copied the chip before Frank took Noah."

Frank looked up sharply.

"When?"

Colin laughed weakly.

"You still don't understand, Frank."

"You were never the smartest brother."

Frank stood despite the cuffs.

"Colin, who are you with?"

The line went silent.

Michael stared at the phone.

Then Colin answered in a different tone.

Calmer.

Almost relieved.

"Daniel says hello."

A gunshot exploded through the speaker.

The call ended.

After Colin's call ended, Michael replayed the final seconds twice.

The gunshot sounded close, but there was another noise beneath it.

A foghorn.

Frank listened carefully.

"That pattern is Rockport Harbor."

Dawson checked the marine signal schedule.

Frank was right.

Michael looked at him.

"You still remember foghorn patterns."

"Your company moved freight through every harbor from here to Portland."

"Our company."

Frank's expression tightened.

"Not anymore."

The correction carried more weight than either man wanted to discuss.

Emily looked at the map.

Colin had not merely called from somewhere near the lighthouse.

He had called from the seaward side where the foghorn was loudest.

That suggested an underground opening or service corridor near the cliff.

Dawson marked three possible access points.

For the first time, they were approaching Daniel with information he might not know they had.

Michael held on to that small advantage.

After two days of being dragged from trap to trap, even one unscripted choice felt valuable.
