Chapter 17 - THE LANTERN

Michael refused to leave Noah until he had watched his son sleep for another twenty minutes.

Nobody argued with him.

Not Emily.

Not Dawson.

Not even Frank.

Margaret sat downstairs under guard with both hands wrapped around a mug she never drank from.

When Michael finally came down, she stood.

"Mr. Carter."

He stopped.

Margaret looked toward the ceiling.

"I know you have every reason to hate me."

Michael said nothing.

"But if you are going to that lighthouse, leave Noah here."

"That was the plan."

"Leave me too."

Michael's eyes hardened.

Margaret continued quickly.

"I helped create the emergency."

"You do not need to remind me."

"I know."

Her voice shook.

"I also know every sound Noah makes when something is wrong."

Michael stared at her.

"You are asking me to trust you with him."

"No."

Margaret looked at the floor.

"I'm asking you to trust Emily's guards, the doctor Dawson brought, the cameras we just installed, and the fact that I will be in a locked room on the other side of the hall if that is what you want."

Michael looked at Emily.

She understood the question.

"Margaret stays separated from Noah unless the doctor requests her help."

Margaret nodded immediately.

Michael turned back to her.

"If anything happens—"

"I know."

He almost said she did not.

Then he remembered the boathouse.

Margaret had already felt a fraction of what fear for a child could do to a person.

"You don't know," Michael said quietly.

"But you know enough."

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Michael walked outside.

Frank waited beside an unmarked sedan with Dawson.

The cuffs were gone.

Michael stopped.

"Why is he uncuffed?"

Dawson answered.

"Because if we're walking into Daniel's ground, I need him able to use his hands."

Michael looked at Frank.

"That is not freedom."

"I know."

"You do exactly what Dawson says."

"I know."

"You run, I shoot you."

Frank looked at Dawson.

"Does he always repeat himself when sleep-deprived?"

Dawson almost smiled.

Michael did not.

Emily came out carrying the red music box inside a padded evidence bag.

She had changed into dry clothes from her old bedroom.

Dark jeans.

Black sweater.

Her hair was tied back the same way it had been every day inside Michael's mansion.

Except nothing about her looked invisible now.

Michael noticed that too.

"You stay behind Dawson once we're inside."

Emily looked at Frank.

"Was that his idea or yours?"

"Mine."

"Then no."

Michael exhaled through his nose.

"Emily."

"The archive needs the melody."

"You can give us the sequence."

"I do not know the sequence yet."

Frank looked at the music box.

"Thomas encoded it through intervals, not notes."

Emily frowned.

"How do you know?"

"He used the same system in shipping logs."

"Can you decode it?"

"Partly."

Emily looked at Michael.

"Which means I am going inside."

Michael hated that Claire had been right again.

The choice belonged to Emily.

He hated even more that respecting it felt like risking her life.

"You do not leave my sight."

Emily almost smiled.

"That sounds less impossible."

They drove north in two vehicles.

The weather worsened as they approached Rockport.

Wind pushed rain across the road in silver sheets.

The lighthouse sat on a rocky point beyond a locked service gate.

No public access road reached the final half mile.

They stopped in a stand of trees and continued on foot.

Dawson had called in a federal tactical unit through a contact who did not ask why Michael Carter suddenly had evidence connected to a medical conspiracy spanning fifteen years.

The unit staged two miles away until Dawson confirmed the archive location.

Michael did not trust large movements near Daniel.

Daniel wanted an audience.

People like Daniel always did.

The lighthouse emerged through rain like a white blade against the dark sea.

Its lamp had not operated in decades.

The windows were boarded.

The keeper's house beside it looked abandoned.

Nothing moved.

Frank crouched behind a stone wall.

"Too quiet."

Michael looked at him.

"You say that every time it is quiet."

"Because quiet people are usually working."

Emily took out the music box.

The tracker had been disabled.

She wound the mechanism once.

The familiar melody began.

Frank listened with his head tilted.

"Five intervals repeat."

Emily nodded.

"My father used to make me clap them."

"Can you remember?"

"I was twelve."

"That is not a no."

Emily closed her eyes.

The melody played again.

Her fingers tapped against the wood.

Two short.

One long.

Three short.

Pause.

Two long.

Frank watched.

"That is not musical notation."

"No."

Emily opened her eyes.

"It's a phone keypad."

Michael frowned.

"How?"

"My father taught me a game."

She tapped the box again.

"Short taps were horizontal moves."

"Long taps were vertical."

Frank stared at her.

"From a starting number."

"Five."

Emily nodded.

"Always five."

She worked through the first phrase.

Five to six.

Six to three.

Three to two.

Two to five.

"6325."

Dawson wrote it down.

The second phrase produced 1748.

The third produced 9902.

Emily stopped.

"Twelve digits."

Frank's eyes narrowed.

"Could be the archive key."

Michael looked at the lighthouse.

"Then we have what Daniel wants."

A voice came from behind them.

"Finally."

Everyone turned.

Colin Vale stood ten feet away.

Blood soaked the side of his coat.

A pistol hung loosely in his right hand.

Dawson raised his weapon.

"Drop it."

Colin did.

The pistol hit wet grass.

Michael stared at him.

"You're alive."

Colin laughed weakly.

"I noticed."

"The gunshot."

"Daniel shot me after the call."

"Why are you walking?"

"Because he missed anything important."

Frank moved closer.

"Or because he wanted you to."

Colin looked at him with hatred.

"You do not get to be suspicious of me."

Frank's expression stayed flat.

"Everyone gets suspicion today."

Michael looked at Colin's wound.

"Why did Daniel let you leave?"

Colin glanced toward the lighthouse.

"He didn't."

"Then how?"

"His men are arguing."

Dawson frowned.

"About what?"

"Money."

Colin almost smiled.

"Apparently loyalty gets complicated when someone threatens to blow up the building you're standing in."

Michael stepped closer.

"Where is Daniel?"

"Under the lighthouse."

"How many men?"

"Six when I left."

"Explosives?"

"Yes."

Frank looked toward the coast.

"Detonator type?"

Colin shrugged painfully.

"Remote and wired backup."

"Of course."

Michael looked at Colin.

"Why were you helping him?"

Colin's eyes lowered.

"I helped Frank first."

Frank said nothing.

"Then Daniel found the money trail."

"He threatened you?"

"He threatened my daughter."

Michael froze.

Colin's daughter was twelve.

"Where is she?"

"Safe now."

"You sure?"

"Dawson's people moved her an hour ago."

Dawson nodded.

Michael had not known.

He was glad somebody had made a good decision without asking him.

Colin continued.

"I started moving money for Frank eleven years ago."

Michael looked at Frank.

"Why?"

Frank answered.

"To pay settlements Blue Harbor refused to pay."

Michael stared.

"With my money."

"At first."

"Without telling me."

"Yes."

Colin laughed bitterly.

"Then the payments became easier to hide than to stop."

Frank looked at him.

"That was you."

"Some of it."

Michael felt anger rise again.

"Some."

Colin looked ashamed.

"I started skimming the routes."

"Daniel found out."

"He used my theft to control me."

Emily stared at him.

"So while Frank told himself he was protecting victims, you turned the same system into your personal account."

Colin nodded.

"Yes."

"And Daniel turned your theft into leverage."

"Yes."

Emily looked at Michael.

"Blue Harbor again."

One person moved one piece.

Then another.

Then someone else used the first compromise to force the second.

The system grew because no one wanted to be the person who admitted what they had already done.

Michael looked at the lighthouse.

"How do we get in?"

Colin pointed toward the keeper's house.

"Cellar door."

"Trapped?"

"Probably."

Frank looked at him.

"Useful."

Colin glared.

"I was bleeding."

"You still are."

Dawson sent one man back with Colin to the medical staging point.

Colin grabbed Michael's sleeve before leaving.

"There is something you need to know about Claire."

Michael stopped.

Frank's face tightened.

Colin saw it.

"He knows."

Michael looked at Frank.

"Knows what?"

Colin's voice became quiet.

"Daniel did not choose Vesper because he wanted Claire dead immediately."

"He wanted her doubting herself."

Emily stared.

Colin continued.

"He wanted memory gaps."

"Missed appointments."

"Arguments she could not remember starting."

Michael felt sick.

"Why?"

Colin looked at him.

"Because he wanted you to think she was unstable."

Michael remembered Claire forgetting a dinner reservation.

Claire accusing him of moving her keys.

Claire crying because she could not remember whether she had locked Noah's future nursery window.

He had told her she was exhausted.

He had told her she needed rest.

He had told her she was scaring herself.

Daniel had not only poisoned Claire.

He had used Michael's own certainty against her.

Michael's face went pale.

"Did she know?"

"Eventually."

Colin looked at Frank.

"Frank found the lab order."

Michael turned.

Frank did not deny it.

"When?"

"Nine days before the crash."

"And you still did not tell me."

"I told Claire."

Michael's voice cracked.

"Why not me?"

Frank's answer came quietly.

"Because Claire begged me not to."

"Why?"

"She said if you knew, you would go after Daniel immediately."

"She was right."

"Yes."

"And instead she died."

Frank's eyes closed.

"Yes."

The word contained no defense.

Michael hated him for that too.

Dawson touched Michael's shoulder.

"We need to move."

Michael let Colin go.

They approached the keeper's house from the rear.

The cellar door stood open.

A cable ran across the threshold at ankle height.

Frank spotted it.

"Pressure alarm."

Dawson disabled it.

Inside, stone steps descended beneath the lighthouse.

The air changed as they went down.

Cold.

Dry.

Mechanical.

The old structure concealed something modern beneath it.

At the bottom of the stairs stood a steel door.

A blue light glowed above a sensor.

Claire's ring fit a circular recess beside it.

Michael held the ring.

Emily held the music box.

Frank stood behind them.

Dawson covered the corridor.

Michael inserted the ring.

The blue light turned white.

A keypad appeared behind a sliding panel.

Emily typed the twelve numbers.

632517489902.

The door unlocked.

A voice came through a speaker.

Daniel.

"Welcome to the Lantern."

The door opened.

A long underground room stretched beneath the lighthouse.

Server racks lined both walls.

Old file cabinets stood between modern storage units.

At the far end, beneath a bank of screens, Daniel Morrow waited in a dark suit.

He looked so much like Frank that Michael felt his brain reject the image.

Daniel smiled.

"You brought my brother."

Frank stepped forward.

"You wanted me."

"I wanted Emily."

Daniel's eyes moved to her.

"You are just sentimental decoration."

Frank's mouth tightened.

"Still charming."

Daniel looked at Michael.

"And you brought the man who thinks he owns everything."

Michael raised his pistol.

Daniel lifted a remote.

Red lights appeared along the ceiling.

Dawson froze.

Daniel smiled.

"That would be the part where you lower the gun."

Michael did not.

Daniel tilted the remote.

"There are enough shaped charges in this room to send the top half of the lighthouse into the Atlantic."

Emily looked at the server racks.

"You would destroy the archive."

"No."

Daniel smiled at her.

"I copied what I need."

"Then why do you need me?"

Daniel's smile widened.

"Because Thomas Parker was smarter than all of us."

"The files are encrypted individually."

"I have names."

"Payments."

"Fragments."

"Enough to terrify people."

He pointed toward a central console.

"But you can open the source records."

Emily's expression hardened.

"And you think I will do that for you."

Daniel looked at Michael.

"Not for me."

A screen behind him came alive.

Live video filled it.

Thomas Parker's house.

Noah's upstairs room.

Michael stopped breathing.

A tiny camera showed Noah sleeping in the crib.

Margaret sat outside the room.

A doctor stood nearby.

Dawson's guards were visible.

"How?"

Dawson whispered.

Daniel laughed.

"You keep thinking safety is a place."

Michael raised the pistol again.

Daniel lifted the remote.

Another screen appeared.

A small device was attached beneath the outside electrical box at Thomas's house.

"That is not a bomb," Daniel said.

"Not yet."

Michael's voice became deadly.

"Touch my son and you die."

Daniel smiled.

"There he is."

"The famous Michael Carter."

"Always most predictable when someone says family."

Emily stepped toward the console.

"What do you want?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Open the archive."

"Then what?"

"Then Michael chooses."

Michael frowned.

"Chooses what?"

Daniel looked delighted.

May you like

"His empire or the truth."
