Chapter 19 - STAY UNTIL THE LIGHT

The first explosion did not destroy the lighthouse.
It sealed the exit.
Stone and steel crashed into the stairwell behind them.
Dust filled the underground archive.
Emily covered her head as fragments struck the console.
Michael found the remote beneath a fallen chair.
The screen was cracked.
A countdown glowed through broken glass.
09:42.
Nine minutes and forty-two seconds.
Dawson shot one of Daniel's guards in the leg.
Another guard dropped his weapon and raised both hands.
The remaining four scattered behind server racks.
Frank and Daniel rolled across the floor, striking each other with the fury of men who had spent decades waiting for a fight neither would admit they wanted.
Michael grabbed the remote.
"Dawson."
Dawson reached him.
"Can you stop it?"
Dawson looked at the countdown.
"Remote probably only initiates."
"Meaning?"
"Wired system has its own timer."
Michael looked toward the explosive lines along the walls.
"Then find the circuit."
Dawson signaled two surrendered guards to the floor and moved toward a maintenance panel.
Emily rose behind the console.
Blood ran along her forearm from flying glass.
Michael saw it.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
"That answer was too fast."
"We have nine minutes."
"Fair."
Emily looked at the screen.
The destination list was still decrypting.
Sixty-three percent.
She kept working.
A bullet struck the server rack beside her.
Michael returned fire.
The shooter dropped behind cover.
Frank shouted.
"Michael."
Daniel had a knife.
Frank caught his wrist with both hands.
The blade hovered above his throat.
Michael aimed.
No clean shot.
Daniel saw him.
"Do it."
Michael froze.
"Shoot us both."
Frank grunted beneath the pressure.
"Don't tempt him."
Daniel laughed.
"You always were afraid he would choose himself."
Frank twisted.
The knife struck the floor.
He drove his forehead into Daniel's face.
Daniel fell sideways.
Frank kicked the knife away.
Then one of Daniel's guards fired.
The bullet hit Frank beneath the ribs.
Frank jerked.
Michael shot the guard.
Frank collapsed.
Daniel crawled toward the remote.
Michael kicked him hard across the face.
Daniel fell onto his back.
Michael stood over him.
For one perfect second, nothing stopped him from firing.
No guard.
No remote.
No uncertainty.
Daniel looked up and smiled through blood.
"There he is."
Michael's finger tightened.
Daniel wanted it.
Not death.
Proof.
Proof that Michael Carter became exactly what Daniel predicted when family was threatened.
Michael lowered the gun.
Daniel's smile vanished.
"No."
Michael grabbed him by the collar.
"You don't get to make me your evidence."
He slammed Daniel face down and cuffed him with Frank's discarded restraints.
Daniel laughed against the floor.
"You think prison changes anything?"
"No."
Michael tightened the cuffs.
"But testimony does."
Daniel stopped laughing.
Emily looked over.
"Seven minutes."
Michael went to Frank.
Dawson had pressed a trauma dressing against the wound.
Frank was conscious.
Barely.
"How bad?"
Dawson looked at Michael.
"Bad enough."
Frank opened his eyes.
"That is a very technical diagnosis."
Dawson pressed harder.
Frank groaned.
"Better?"
"Much."
Michael crouched.
"Stay awake."
Frank looked at him.
"You sound angry."
"I am."
"Good."
"Stop saying good."
Frank almost smiled.
"You always hated being told what to feel."
Michael looked toward the countdown.
06:51.
"Tell me how Claire died."
Frank's expression changed.
Dawson looked at Michael.
"Now?"
"Now."
Frank closed his eyes.
"Daniel had been dosing her for weeks."
"We know."
"The night she died, she planned to meet a federal investigator."
Michael's chest tightened.
"Who?"
"A woman named Rebecca Sloan."
"Claire never mentioned her."
"That was the point."
Frank breathed shallowly.
"I had a team following Claire because I knew Daniel knew about the meeting."
Michael stared.
"Then why was she alone when she crashed?"
Frank looked at him.
"Because I pulled the team."
Silence.
Michael's face hardened.
"Why?"
"We received a threat against you."
"Where?"
"Boston Harbor Hotel."
Michael remembered that night.
He had been at a fundraiser.
Frank arrived halfway through and insisted Michael leave through the kitchen.
Michael thought it was routine caution.
"You chose me."
Frank's eyes filled with something worse than pain.
"Yes."
Michael stood.
Frank grabbed his wrist weakly.
"Listen."
Michael looked down.
"I believed Claire had enough distance."
"I believed Daniel wanted you, not her."
"I was wrong."
Michael's voice shook.
"He forced her off the road."
Frank nodded.
"A stolen SUV struck the rear quarter panel."
"The crash report said she lost control."
"I changed the report."
Michael stared at him.
Dawson stopped moving for a second.
Frank continued.
"I removed the second vehicle from the evidence file."
"I paid Mercer to bury the Vesper results."
"I told myself Daniel would kill more people if Blue Harbor knew Claire had reached federal authorities."
Michael's face emptied.
"So you erased her murder."
Frank closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Michael wanted to hit him again.
Frank lay bleeding on the floor and Michael still wanted to hit him.
"You let me believe it was an accident."
"Yes."
"You stood beside me at her funeral."
"Yes."
"You held Noah while I signed the death certificate."
Frank's voice broke.
"Yes."
Michael stepped away.
Emily looked at him from the console.
She did not tell him to calm down.
She did not tell him Claire would understand.
She simply let the truth be terrible.
Michael appreciated that more than comfort.
Daniel laughed softly from the floor.
"There is your brother."
Michael turned.
"Shut up."
Daniel smiled.
"He chose you and killed Claire."
Frank spoke from the floor.
"No."
Daniel looked at him.
Frank forced himself upright against the server rack.
"I chose Michael."
"You killed Claire."
Daniel's smile thinned.
Frank continued.
"Do not give me your murder because I made it easier."
"I have enough of my own."
Daniel's eyes hardened.
For the first time, Michael saw Frank refuse the easier form of guilt.
Not absolution.
Accuracy.
Emily shouted.
"Destination list open."
Everyone looked toward the console.
Hundreds of destinations appeared.
Federal investigators.
State attorneys general.
Medical boards.
Journalists.
Law firms representing families.
A nonprofit archive.
Encrypted backups in three countries.
Thomas Parker had built the Lantern not as a vault.
As a release mechanism.
Daniel stared.
"Do not send it."
Emily looked at him.
"You said you wanted the truth open."
"Not like that."
"Of course not."
She placed her hand over the transmission command.
Daniel struggled against the cuffs.
"You don't know what is in there."
"Neither do you."
"Innocent people will be destroyed."
Emily's face tightened.
"That is why the source records go to investigators and families, not your edited packages."
Daniel looked at Michael.
"Stop her."
Michael stared at the screen.
He saw Carter Group files.
Payments.
Signatures.
His name.
Frank's name.
Colin's name.
If Emily sent everything, Carter Group might collapse.
Executives would be investigated.
Contracts would disappear.
Banks would freeze accounts.
Michael could lose billions.
Thousands of employees could face uncertainty.
Daniel saw the hesitation.
He smiled.
"There."
Michael looked at him.
"Now you understand the choice."
"Your empire or their truth."
The countdown showed 04:08.
Emily did not press the command.
She looked at Michael.
Not because she needed permission.
Because the files would affect thousands of people who had never heard of Blue Harbor.
Michael understood the cost.
He thought of Claire.
He thought of Thomas Parker.
He thought of Lily, patient 06B, whose name had become the key because someone had tried to turn her into a number.
He thought of Noah beneath the warm blanket while twelve paramedics fought for his life.
He thought of all the people Frank, Colin, Mercer, Margaret, and Eric had each told themselves they were protecting when they moved one terrible piece.
Michael looked at Emily.
"Send it."
Daniel's face changed.
"Michael."
"Send everything."
Emily pressed the command.
UPLOAD STARTED.
Daniel screamed.
"You idiot."
Michael looked at him.
"Maybe."
"Do you know what happens to Carter Group?"
"We'll find out."
"You will lose everything."
Michael looked toward Frank.
"No."
His voice became quiet.
"I almost did that in the nursery."
Daniel stopped speaking.
The archive began transmitting.
Ten percent.
Twenty.
Dawson opened the maintenance panel.
"I found the detonator circuit."
Michael looked at the timer.
03:21.
"Can you stop it?"
Dawson studied the wiring.
"Maybe."
Emily almost laughed despite herself.
Michael looked at her.
"Do not encourage him."
Thirty-eight percent.
Dawson traced two wires.
"There is a dead-man relay tied to the external power box."
Michael thought of the device shown at Thomas Parker's house.
"Daniel said that device was mostly nothing."
Dawson's face tightened.
"He lied."
Daniel smiled again.
"Not exactly."
Michael looked at him.
"What does it do?"
Daniel said nothing.
Dawson understood.
"It is a signal repeater."
"If this circuit loses power, the remote relay completes somewhere else."
Michael's face went cold.
"At Noah's house."
Emily stopped typing.
Daniel laughed.
"Now we have a real choice."
The timer showed 02:47.
Dawson looked at Michael.
"If I cut the lighthouse circuit wrong, it may trigger the device at Thomas's house."
Michael called the house.
No connection.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Daniel smiled.
"Jammer."
Michael raised the pistol toward him.
"Code."
"No."
"Code."
"Choose."
Michael stepped closer.
Daniel looked delighted.
"Archive or baby."
Emily stared at the upload.
Fifty-nine percent.
Frank forced himself to stand against the rack.
Blood soaked the dressing.
"He is lying."
Daniel looked at him.
"Am I?"
Frank shook his head.
"Dad taught us the same systems."
He looked at Dawson.
"A remote relay needs confirmation."
Dawson nodded slowly.
"Usually."
Frank pointed at Daniel's cuffed hands.
"The remote is broken."
Michael looked at the cracked device on the floor.
Frank continued.
"The house repeater cannot receive confirmation if we isolate the transmitter before cutting the circuit."
Dawson's eyes sharpened.
"Faraday the control box."
Emily looked around.
"With what?"
Dawson pointed toward a metal document cabinet.
Michael and Emily emptied it onto the floor.
Dawson ripped the control module from the maintenance wall and shoved it inside the cabinet.
Daniel's smile vanished.
"Don't."
Frank looked at him.
"There."
"That is the face I remember."
Dawson slammed the cabinet shut.
The timer froze at 01:53.
Everyone stopped breathing.
Then the red ceiling lights went dark.
Daniel stared.
Dawson waited three seconds.
Five.
Ten.
No explosion.
Emily looked at the upload.
Eighty-one percent.
Michael's knees almost gave out.
Frank slid down the server rack.
Dawson caught him.
"Stay with me."
Frank looked at Michael.
"You should go."
"Not without you."
Frank almost laughed.
"That is inconveniently decent."
Michael glared.
"Do not misunderstand."
"I need you alive to testify."
Frank nodded weakly.
"There he is."
The upload reached ninety-five percent.
Daniel stared at the screen as though watching his life's work burn.
Ninety-eight.
Ninety-nine.
Then the system chimed.
TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.
A second message appeared.
DEAD MAN PROTOCOL RELEASED.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emily exhaled.
Michael looked at Claire's ring still seated in the console.
The ring suddenly clicked.
A hidden file appeared on the screen.
CLAIRE CARTER - PERSONAL / FOR MICHAEL AFTER RELEASE.
Michael stopped breathing.
Emily looked at him.
"Later."
He nodded.
For once, later was not avoidance.
It was hope that there would actually be a later.
Dawson called the tactical team as soon as the jammer died.
Federal officers entered through an emergency shaft twenty minutes later.
Daniel was taken out in restraints.
He did not speak to Michael again.
Frank was carried out on a stretcher.
As he passed Michael, he opened his eyes.
"Noah?"
Michael looked toward the cloudy sky above the ruined stairwell.
His phone finally connected.
Thomas Parker's house answered.
The doctor appeared on video.
Noah was awake.
Alive.
Safe.
Michael turned the screen toward Frank.
Frank looked at the baby.
His eyes closed.
The medics carried him away.
Emily stood beside Michael at the base of the lighthouse.
Dawn-colored light had begun to break through the clouds even though it was already afternoon.
The storm was finally moving east.
Michael looked at Claire's ring in his hand.
Inside the engraving were the words he had misunderstood for years.
STAY UNTIL THE LIGHT.
He had always thought Claire meant loyalty.
Now he wondered whether she had meant something else.
Stay through the dark part.
Stay long enough for truth to become visible.
Michael closed his fingers around the ring.
May you like
Then he and Emily went home to Noah.
