Chapter 8 - NORTH COVE

Michael wanted to drive to North Cove alone.
Emily refused before he finished the sentence.
"You do not know whether Margaret is accusing Frank or warning you that someone is pretending to be him."
Michael checked the magazine in his pistol.
"I know she is tied to a chair."
"Which is why charging in angry is exactly what they expect."
Frank stood near the hospital window without a weapon, badge, phone, or ring.
"Take me."
Michael looked at him.
"The message says come without you."
"Then bringing me breaks their script."
Emily shook her head.
"Or gets Margaret killed."
Frank's jaw tightened.
"She is already dead if Daniel has her."
Emily stepped toward him.
"You do not get to decide that."
Frank looked at her.
"You don't know my brother."
"And you don't know Margaret."
Michael watched them.
For the first time, he realized Emily was not intimidated by Frank at all.
She hated him too much to be afraid.
"Dawson goes ahead," Michael said.
"Two teams around the cove."
Frank nodded.
"Good."
Michael looked at him.
"You stay here."
Frank's face hardened.
"Michael."
"If someone is wearing your face, copying your access, and using your brother's name, I want one Frank Miller in a location I can verify."
Frank stared at him.
Then he nodded.
"Take Emily."
Michael almost laughed.
"I thought you wanted her gone."
"I still do."
Frank looked at Emily.
"But she sees things the rest of us miss."
Emily folded her arms.
"Another compliment and I may actually hit you."
Frank turned toward Michael.
"There."
"What?"
"She is feeling better."
Emily rolled her eyes.
Michael nearly smiled again.
He hated that the smallest trace of normality felt like betrayal while Noah lay behind them.
He went back to his son's bedside before leaving.
Noah's eyes fluttered once.
Michael placed one finger in his hand.
Noah gripped weakly.
Michael bent close.
"I am coming back."
The words sounded like a promise to both of them.
Emily stood in the doorway.
Michael looked at her.
"You don't have to come."
"Yes, I do."
"Why?"
She hesitated.
"Because my father died trying to expose this."
"That is not the only reason."
Emily looked at Noah.
"No."
Michael waited.
"Claire helped me once."
He went still.
"When?"
"Later."
Michael's expression darkened.
Emily held up one hand.
"You can yell at me in the car."
He did not yell.
He asked one question after another while Dawson drove them north.
Emily answered reluctantly.
Claire had found her six years earlier after Thomas Parker's death.
She had paid Emily's college tuition anonymously for two semesters.
When Emily discovered who was behind the payments, she confronted her.
Claire told her that Thomas had saved lives and deserved better than a forgotten obituary.
Emily refused further money.
They stayed in occasional contact.
Then Claire disappeared from Emily's life three years ago.
"Why?"
Michael asked.
"She said contact was dangerous."
"Did she ever mention me?"
Emily looked out the window.
"Constantly."
Michael stared at her.
"What did she say?"
"Mostly that you were impossible."
Dawson coughed to hide a laugh.
Michael ignored him.
"Anything useful?"
Emily's expression softened.
"She loved you."
Michael looked away.
The rest of the drive passed in silence.
North Cove was a narrow inlet surrounded by wooded private property.
The boathouse in the photograph belonged to a summer estate currently listed for sale.
Dawson's advance team found no vehicles.
No movement.
No heat signature except one person inside the boathouse.
Margaret.
Michael and Emily approached from the trees.
Dawson moved along the opposite shore with two men.
The brass key hung on a chain beneath Michael's shirt.
He had brought it despite Emily's objections.
The boathouse door stood open.
Margaret was visible inside.
Tied to the chair.
Exactly as in the photograph.
Michael moved forward.
Emily caught his sleeve.
"The window."
He looked.
The round window behind Margaret was wrong.
In the photograph, gray water had filled the lower half.
Now the tide was lower.
The waterline should have dropped.
It had not.
Michael stared.
"Screen."
Emily nodded.
"The window is a monitor."
The image behind Margaret flickered almost imperceptibly.
A trap.
Michael signaled Dawson.
His team stopped.
Emily scanned the rafters.
"Camera above the pulley."
Michael saw it.
Tiny.
Watching.
He raised both hands where it could see them.
"I brought the key."
A speaker crackled somewhere inside.
The distorted voice answered.
"Throw it onto the floor."
Michael did not move.
"Release Margaret."
"Key first."
"No."
The speaker laughed.
"Claire said you were difficult."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"You knew her."
"Better than you did at the end."
The words cut.
Emily saw it.
"Do not let him steer you," she whispered.
The speaker continued.
"Ask Francis why Claire stopped sleeping beside you."
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Ask him why she changed cars twice in one month."
Michael said nothing.
"Ask him why she kept a bag packed behind the wine rack."
Michael looked toward Emily.
She shook her head.
"He wants you angry."
The voice became almost playful.
"Or ask Emily why Claire gave her a job in your house."
Michael slowly turned.
Emily froze.
"What?"
The speaker laughed.
"Oh."
"She never told you."
Michael stared at Emily.
"Claire hired you?"
Emily's face went pale.
"Not exactly."
"What does that mean?"
"Michael."
"Answer me."
The speaker crackled.
"This is adorable."
Emily stepped closer to Michael.
"Claire sent me a letter before she died."
Michael stopped breathing.
"What letter?"
"She told me that if anything happened to her, I should apply for a job in your house."
Michael stared at her.
"Why?"
Emily's eyes went to the camera.
"Because she thought Noah would need someone who knew Blue Harbor."
Michael's face changed.
The speaker went silent.
Emily continued.
"She did not know what would happen."
"She knew enough to plant you near my son."
"She asked me to watch."
"And you lied to me for eight months."
"Yes."
Michael stepped away from her.
The betrayal hurt more than he expected.
Not because Emily owed him loyalty.
Because Claire had built an entire defense around him without trusting him enough to tell him it existed.
The speaker crackled again.
"Now throw the key."
Michael looked at Margaret.
Her eyes were wide above the tape.
Her fingers moved against the chair.
Two.
One.
Two.
Frank.
Then a different sequence.
Emily saw it.
"She's changing the message."
"What does it say?"
Emily watched.
Three fingers.
Pause.
One.
Pause.
Four.
Her face tightened.
"Behind."
Michael turned.
A man stepped from the trees twenty feet away.
He wore Frank's face.
Same height.
Same gray hair.
Same scar beside the mouth.
For one impossible second, Michael believed Frank had somehow left the hospital and reached the cove before them.
Then the man smiled.
Frank never smiled like that.
Too wide.
Too pleased.
"Hello, Michael."
Emily whispered the name first.
"Daniel."
The man lifted a pistol.
Dawson's team raised weapons from the opposite side.
Daniel pressed a remote in his other hand.
Margaret's chair began to sink.
The floor beneath her opened into black seawater.
Michael lunged forward.
Daniel laughed.
"Key or nanny."
Margaret dropped another foot.
Water reached her shoes.
Michael tore the brass key from beneath his shirt.
Emily grabbed his wrist.
"Don't."
He stared at her.
"She'll drown."
"That isn't the key he wants."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Michael looked at Emily.
"What?"
Emily pointed toward the brass key.
"Claire would never leave the real key in a box labeled with her own warning."
Daniel raised the gun toward her.
"Careful."
Emily's eyes stayed on Michael.
"That key is bait."
Michael suddenly understood.
The trigger circuit in locker 317.
The hidden camera.
The automatic message.
Claire had designed the locker to reveal who came after the key.
Michael smiled for the first time all morning.
Then he threw the brass key into the ocean.
Daniel's face twisted with fury.
And Margaret's chair dropped straight through the floor.
At the hospital before they left for North Cove, Emily made one more check of Noah's room.
She asked the nurse to list every object brought in after his admission.
Fresh blankets.
A portable monitor.
Formula.
Two stuffed animals sent by Carter employees.
Michael looked at the toys.
"Remove them."
The nurse blinked.
"They were screened."
"Remove them anyway."
Emily picked up one bear and turned it over.
The manufacturer's tag had been cut and resewn.
Dawson opened the seam.
Nothing dangerous was inside.
Only a tiny audio transmitter.
Michael's face hardened.
Someone had been listening to the hospital room after Noah arrived.
Emily looked at the ceiling.
"That explains how they knew when I left the chair."
Dawson bagged the transmitter.
Michael looked at Noah.
Every act of care had become something they needed to inspect.
Flowers.
Toys.
Doctors.
Warmth.
Even kindness had to pass through suspicion.
May you like
Michael hated Daniel for that almost as much as he hated him for the patch.
