Chapter 10 - THE EMPTY CRIB

Michael did not remember the drive back to Boston.
He remembered pieces.
Dawson shouting into three phones.
Emily forcing Margaret into an ambulance.
The taste of blood where Michael bit the inside of his cheek.
Claire's ring cutting into his palm.
He remembered calling the hospital again and again.
No useful answer came.
At 7:42 a.m., two minutes before Michael's SUV reached the city, the hospital sent a security image.
A transport cradle rolled through a service corridor.
Two men in hospital scrubs pushed it.
A third walked beside them wearing a black suit.
The suited man was Frank Miller.
Michael stared at the image until his vision blurred.
"Impossible."
Emily sat beside him.
"The real Frank was guarded."
Dawson looked back from the front seat.
"Not anymore."
Michael lifted his head.
"What?"
"He left the floor twelve minutes ago."
"How?"
"Fire alarm in the west stairwell."
Michael laughed once.
The sound frightened everyone in the vehicle.
"Of course."
Dawson continued.
"One guard followed evacuation procedure."
"And the other?"
"Found unconscious in a supply room."
Michael closed his eyes.
"So Frank is gone at the exact moment a man with Frank's face removes my son."
Emily's voice was quiet.
"That does not prove which Frank."
Michael looked at her.
"There should not be a sentence containing the words which Frank."
She had no answer.
The hospital entrance was chaos.
Police cars blocked one lane.
Michael ignored every uniform that tried to stop him.
He reached Noah's room.
The bed was empty.
The blanket lay folded on the mattress.
One tiny sock remained beneath the rail.
Michael picked it up.
His hands began to shake.
Emily stood behind him.
She did not touch him this time.
"How long?"
Michael asked.
A security supervisor answered.
"Twenty-seven minutes."
"Route?"
"Service elevator to the loading dock."
"Vehicle?"
"Ambulance."
"Real?"
"Stolen from a private transfer company."
Dawson entered.
"Found it."
Michael turned.
"Where?"
"Three blocks away."
"Noah?"
Dawson shook his head.
Michael looked back at the empty bed.
Something inside him became very quiet.
The panic did not disappear.
It crystallized.
"Close every bridge, airport, marina, and private road within fifty miles."
The hospital supervisor blinked.
"You can't close—"
Michael looked at Dawson.
"Do it."
Dawson nodded.
"Already started."
Emily searched the room.
She opened drawers.
Checked the floor.
Looked beneath the mattress.
Michael watched her.
"What are you doing?"
"Daniel leaves messages."
"This isn't a game."
"To him it is."
Emily knelt near the oxygen panel.
A small strip of white tape was stuck beneath it.
She peeled it free.
Three numbers were written in black ink.
9-1-3.
Michael stared.
"Address?"
Emily shook her head.
"Could be a date."
Dawson looked at the numbers.
"September thirteenth?"
Michael froze.
Claire died on September thirteenth.
Emily saw his face.
"That's the date."
Michael nodded.
The hospital room seemed to tilt.
"Her crash."
Dawson swore.
Emily looked at Claire's ring.
"The chip."
Michael pulled the ring from beneath his shirt.
"What about it?"
"Maybe 913 is the password."
Dawson brought an isolated tablet.
They extracted the micro-storage chip.
A single encrypted folder appeared.
Password required.
Michael typed 0913.
Access denied.
He tried 913.
The folder opened.
Claire's face appeared in a video thumbnail.
Michael could not breathe.
The file name read LAST LIGHT.
Emily stepped back.
"You should watch it."
Michael's finger hovered over the screen.
Then Dawson's phone rang.
"We found the ambulance."
"You said that."
"We found something inside it."
Michael looked at him.
"What?"
"Frank's real ring."
Silence.
Michael thought of the duplicate Frank had worn without realizing it.
Someone had taken the original.
Now it had been placed in the abandoned ambulance.
"Anything else?"
Dawson's face tightened.
"A note."
"Read it."
"Wrong brother."
Michael looked at Emily.
"Meaning?"
"Either Daniel wants us to think Frank took Noah."
"Or Frank wants us to think Daniel did."
Emily nodded.
Dawson's phone buzzed again.
"Mercer is ready to talk."
Michael stared at the LAST LIGHT video.
His son was missing.
His oldest friend had disappeared.
His dead wife had left an answer behind a password tied to the day she died.
And the doctor who had put the patch on Noah was suddenly ready to confess.
Michael made the hardest choice of the morning.
"Mercer first."
Emily looked surprised.
"Claire told you not to react before you understand."
Michael's voice was empty.
"I'm trying it once."
Dr. Alan Mercer sat in a secure interview room inside a federal building two miles from the hospital.
Michael used favors he should not have possessed to enter.
Emily came with him.
Dawson remained outside.
Mercer looked destroyed.
His expensive shirt was stained.
His hands shook.
A bruise darkened his neck.
Michael sat across from him.
"Where is my son?"
Mercer looked at Emily.
"You are Thomas Parker's daughter."
Emily's expression did not change.
"Where is Noah?"
"I don't know."
Michael slammed both hands on the table.
"Wrong answer."
Mercer flinched.
"I swear."
"You put the patch on him."
Mercer closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Michael's chair scraped backward.
Emily caught his arm.
"Sit."
Michael stared at her.
"Sit."
He did.
Barely.
Emily looked at Mercer.
"Why?"
Mercer swallowed.
"I was told the dose was nonlethal."
Michael laughed without humor.
"There it is."
Mercer looked sick.
"It was supposed to create respiratory distress for seven to ten minutes."
Emily's face hardened.
"In a six-month-old baby."
"I know."
"You do not get to say that like it helps."
Mercer lowered his head.
Michael leaned forward.
"Who paid you?"
Mercer said nothing.
Michael's voice dropped.
"My son is missing."
Mercer looked up.
"Then they changed the plan."
"Who is they?"
"I was contacted through an intermediary."
"Name."
Mercer breathed out.
"Margaret Collins."
Emily stared.
"Margaret?"
"She delivered the schedule."
Michael's jaw tightened.
"She nearly drowned because of this."
"I don't know why."
"Who gave Margaret the order?"
Mercer shook his head.
"She said Mr. Miller."
Michael closed his eyes briefly.
"Frank?"
"She never said Frank."
Emily leaned closer.
"Exact words."
Mercer thought.
"Mr. Miller wants a medical event between eight-thirty and nine."
"Did you speak to Mr. Miller?"
"Once."
"In person?"
"Phone."
"Voice?"
Mercer looked toward the mirrored glass.
"Frank Miller's voice."
Michael felt cold.
"What did he tell you?"
"That the child would be safe."
Mercer's eyes filled with tears.
"He said emergency teams would already be positioned nearby."
Michael remembered twelve paramedics arriving unusually fast.
He had thought his security network made that possible.
"Were they?"
"Yes."
Emily's face changed.
"That explains the twelve."
Michael looked at her.
"What?"
"Someone pre-positioned multiple emergency units."
Mercer nodded.
"The plan depended on rapid intervention."
Michael's hands curled.
"The plan."
Mercer flinched again.
"The patch was supposed to be removed after four minutes."
"By whom?"
"Margaret."
Emily stared at him.
"Why didn't she?"
"I don't know."
"Who changed the stabilizer to DHX-4?"
Mercer looked confused.
"I didn't."
Emily leaned forward.
"The patch you used contained it."
Mercer shook his head violently.
"No."
"Toxicology confirmed it."
"Then someone switched the patch."
Michael stared.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Mercer stood abruptly.
"I made the patches myself."
The room went silent.
Emily's face changed.
"Where?"
Mercer realized what he had revealed.
He sat slowly.
"Private lab."
"Where?"
"Waltham."
"How many?"
"Three."
"And what happened to them?"
Mercer swallowed.
"One went to the house."
"The other two?"
"Destroyed."
Emily stared at him.
"Did you destroy them personally?"
Mercer looked away.
That was enough.
"Who did?"
"A technician."
"Name."
Mercer's lips parted.
Then the lights went out.
Michael stood.
"Not again."
Emergency lighting flashed red.
A sharp pop came from the ceiling vent.
Mercer grabbed his throat.
Emily moved first.
"Get down."
Michael dragged Mercer away from the vent.
A faint mist spread through the room.
Dawson smashed the door open from outside.
"Move."
They stumbled into the hallway.
Mercer collapsed.
Emily dropped beside him.
"He is seizing."
A federal medic rushed forward.
Michael stared at the vent.
Someone had attacked a protected witness inside a secure building.
That meant Daniel's reach was bigger than a stolen badge and a hidden camera.
Mercer's hand grabbed Michael's sleeve.
His eyes were wide with terror.
"The technician."
Michael bent closer.
"Name."
Mercer struggled for air.
"Collins."
Emily froze.
"Margaret?"
Mercer shook his head weakly.
"Her son."
Then his hand fell away.
While Mercer was moved to emergency care, federal technicians searched the interview room vent.
The mist had come from a small pressurized capsule installed behind a removable grille.
Dawson stared at the device.
"Someone had access before we arrived."
The federal supervisor looked offended.
Michael almost laughed.
He had worn the same expression every time someone penetrated his own security.
"Welcome to the club."
The supervisor did not appreciate the remark.
Emily examined the capsule from a distance.
"Daniel does not need to own a building."
Michael looked at her.
"He only needs one person inside who already crossed a line."
Dawson nodded.
A janitorial contractor had entered the room the night before using a valid work order.
The contractor had gambling debt and an unexplained cash deposit that morning.
Another small compromise.
Another person who probably told himself he was only installing hardware.
Michael felt the pattern settle into place with sickening clarity.
Blue Harbor did not require armies of loyal criminals.
It required ordinary people willing to make one exception for money, fear, shame, or love.
May you like
Daniel simply connected the exceptions.
