Chapter 14 - THE COTTAGE WITHOUT LIGHTS

Michael left every Carter vehicle behind.

They used an unmarked federal sedan borrowed through a contact Dawson trusted more than he trusted his own men.

The absurdity was not lost on Michael.

Forty-eight hours earlier, he believed his security system could protect a head of state.

Now he was borrowing a stranger's car because his own network had become a map for the enemy.

Emily sat beside him with the red music box on her knees.

Dawson drove.

Two officers from outside Michael's organization followed in a separate car with their lights off.

The sun had climbed above the coast, but heavy clouds kept the morning gray.

Michael called Noah's name in his head with every mile.

He imagined a pacifier in his son's mouth.

He imagined another invisible device.

He imagined Frank standing over him.

Every image made his chest tighten.

Emily watched him.

"Do not decide what you are going to see before we arrive."

Michael looked at her.

"Claire again?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"Me."

Michael stared out the window.

"I don't know whether that is better."

Emily turned the music box over in her hands.

"Frank had a chance to kill Noah at the hospital if that was what he wanted."

"He also had a chance to not poison him in the first place."

"Yes."

Michael looked at her.

"You keep insisting on holding two ideas at once."

"Because people are usually worse than the stories they tell about themselves and more complicated than the stories we tell about them."

Michael's expression tightened.

"My son does not need Frank to be complicated."

"No."

Emily looked down at the box.

"He needs Frank to tell us what he did."

They parked half a mile from the cottage.

Michael knew every tree on the path.

He had walked there with Claire when they were both too young to understand how much their lives would change.

The cottage sat between pines overlooking a narrow strip of rocky beach.

No lights.

No visible vehicle.

No movement.

Dawson signaled the outer team to hold.

Michael and Emily approached from the shore side.

"You stay behind me."

Michael whispered.

Emily gave him a look.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Say it."

"The last time you told me where to stand, you nearly drowned."

Michael decided silence was better.

They reached the back porch.

The door was unlocked.

That worried him more than a locked one would have.

Michael entered first.

The cottage smelled of salt, old wood, and something warm.

Formula.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

A baby bottle sat on the kitchen counter.

Still warm.

Emily touched it.

"Recent."

Michael moved toward the bedroom.

A soft sound came from inside.

He stopped.

Noah cried.

Michael forgot every tactical instruction Dawson had given him.

He ran.

Noah lay in a portable crib beneath the window.

His face was pink.

His eyes were open.

A tiny cry escaped him again.

Michael reached him and lifted him so quickly the blanket fell away.

"Hey."

His voice broke.

"Hey, little man."

Noah pressed his face against Michael's chest.

Michael held him with both arms.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times during the last hours.

Every imagined version involved rage, relief, and motion.

The real moment contained only Noah's weight.

Six months of warmth.

Six months of breath.

Claire's last gift to him.

Michael buried his face in his son's hair.

"I'm here."

Emily stood in the doorway.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She turned away before Michael saw too much.

Then her attention snapped to the crib.

A pacifier lay beside the mattress.

Clear plastic.

Blue ring.

Emily's face hardened.

"Do not put that in his mouth."

Michael looked down.

"I wasn't going to."

"Bag it."

Dawson entered behind them and sealed the pacifier in an evidence pouch.

"No Frank?"

Michael looked around.

"Not yet."

A floorboard creaked in the hall.

Dawson raised his weapon.

Michael turned with Noah against his chest.

Frank stepped from the bathroom.

His hands were empty.

His shirt was torn.

Blood darkened one shoulder.

Michael stared at him.

For a second, neither spoke.

Then Michael handed Noah to Emily.

"Take him."

Emily hesitated.

"Michael."

"Take him."

She did.

Michael crossed the room and hit Frank hard enough to send him into the wall.

Frank did not fight back.

Michael hit him again.

Dawson moved forward.

Emily stopped him.

"Wait."

Michael grabbed Frank by the shirt.

"You used my son."

Frank's split lip bled.

"Yes."

Michael hit him again.

"You authorized the patch."

"Yes."

Another blow.

"You told Mercer it was safe."

"Yes."

Michael's fist drew back again.

Frank looked at Noah.

"I was wrong."

Michael froze.

Frank's voice was quiet.

"I was catastrophically wrong."

Michael shoved him against the wall.

"That is not remorse."

"No."

Frank met his eyes.

"It is fact."

Michael wanted to kill him.

He could feel how easy it would be.

One more punch.

Then another.

Frank would probably let him.

Noah cried behind them.

Michael stopped.

Claire's voice returned from the recording.

Hold him before you do anything else.

Michael released Frank.

He turned and took Noah back from Emily.

Frank watched.

Something like pain crossed his face.

"Good."

Michael looked at him.

"Do not tell me good."

Frank nodded.

"Fair."

Dawson cuffed him.

Michael sat with Noah on the bed.

"Start talking."

Frank lowered himself into a chair.

"The plan was called Lullaby."

Emily's face tightened.

"Eric mentioned it."

Frank nodded.

"It was mine."

Michael's eyes hardened.

"Why?"

Frank looked at Claire's ring.

"Because I knew Claire had built a dead man's cache."

"You could have asked me."

"You didn't know."

"You could have told me."

"And then you would have torn through every Blue Harbor name in forty-eight hours."

Michael said nothing.

Frank continued.

"Daniel was back."

"I confirmed it six months before Claire died."

"He had already begun buying witnesses and rebuilding old connections."

"Claire wanted to expose everything immediately."

"I wanted to isolate the archive first."

Emily stared at him.

"You wanted to decide what got released."

Frank looked at her.

"Yes."

"To protect Michael."

"Yes."

"And yourself."

Frank paused.

"Yes."

Michael's jaw tightened.

At least he was no longer pretending.

"Why Noah?"

Frank looked ashamed for the first time.

"The house had become impossible to access quietly."

"After Claire died, you doubled everything."

Michael stared.

"So you created a medical emergency."

"A controlled one."

Michael stood so fast Noah startled.

He immediately sat again and soothed him.

Frank closed his eyes.

"I deserve that."

"You deserve worse."

"Yes."

Emily stepped closer.

"Who designed the dose?"

"Mercer."

"Who made the patch?"

"Eric."

"Who recruited Margaret?"

Frank's face tightened.

"I did."

Michael looked at him.

"She knew?"

"She knew Noah would become ill."

"She agreed?"

"Her son was in debt to Daniel."

Emily shook her head.

"That is not the same thing."

Frank nodded.

"No."

"Did she know the real reason?"

"No."

Michael's voice was hard.

"Who replaced your ring?"

"Daniel."

"How?"

"Gym locker."

"You knew?"

"Not until after the hospital."

"Who changed the patch formula?"

"Daniel through Eric."

"Did you know before it went on Noah?"

Frank looked at him.

"No."

Michael studied his face.

He could not tell whether that was truth.

Frank seemed to understand.

"You should not believe me yet."

Michael almost laughed.

"We finally agree on something."

Emily held up the evidence bag containing the pacifier.

"Why do you have this?"

Frank looked at it.

"I took it from Daniel."

"What is inside?"

"A tracker."

Emily frowned.

"Only a tracker?"

"As far as I know."

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Eric thought it was a second chemical carrier."

"Because Daniel told him it was."

"Why?"

Frank looked toward the window.

"To make Eric believe Noah could be killed remotely."

Emily's face tightened.

"Control through fear."

"Daniel's favorite kind."

Michael looked at Frank's wounded shoulder.

"How did you get Noah?"

"I intercepted the hospital team."

"The men with your face?"

"Daniel's men."

"And the camera showed you."

"Because I walked beside the cradle after taking it from them."

Michael stared.

"You kidnapped my son from his kidnappers."

Frank almost smiled.

"That is one way to describe it."

"I have several others."

"I imagine so."

Dawson checked the cottage windows.

"How did Daniel know to send us toward the lighthouse?"

Frank looked at the red music box.

"Because he knows Thomas's system."

Emily frowned.

"My father trusted you with the music box?"

"No."

"Then how?"

Frank looked at her.

"Robert Collins."

Eric's father.

Emily went still.

"Robert copied Thomas's notes before he died."

"Daniel bought them later."

Michael looked at Noah.

"So the lighthouse is a trap."

Frank shook his head.

"It is worse."

"Meaning?"

"The Lantern is real."

Emily stared.

"At the lighthouse?"

"Beneath it."

"Then why warn us not to go?"

Frank looked at Michael.

"Because Daniel has enough explosives under that peninsula to erase the archive, the building, and everyone inside it."

Silence filled the cottage.

Michael looked at Claire's ring.

"He wants Emily there."

Frank nodded.

"Thomas divided the access sequence."

"Claire had one half."

"Emily has the other."

Emily looked at the music box.

"The coordinates aren't the sequence."

"No."

"Then where is it?"

Frank's gaze moved to her.

"In the melody."

Emily stared at the red box.

The simple tune her father had given her as a child.

Frank continued.

"Daniel can reach the Lantern door."

"Claire's ring can wake the system."

"But only you can open the archive."

Michael held Noah closer.

"Then Emily does not go."

Frank looked at him.

"If she doesn't, Daniel starts releasing partial files."

"Let him."

"He will not release the truth cleanly."

"He'll alter it."

Emily finished the thought.

Frank nodded.

"He has already prepared packages implicating innocent families alongside guilty ones."

"He wants panic."

"He wants every person named in Blue Harbor afraid enough to pay him before the full archive opens."

Michael looked at Emily.

"Still no."

Emily stared at Noah.

"If the archive contains the original trial records, families have spent years not knowing what happened to their children."

"You are not going."

"Michael."

"No."

Frank watched them.

Emily's voice softened.

"Claire left the sequence with me for a reason."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Claire also left me a son she expected me to protect."

"And protecting Noah cannot mean letting Daniel control everyone forever."

Michael looked at Frank.

"You have done enough deciding what risks other people should take."

Frank nodded.

"Agreed."

Michael blinked.

Frank looked at Emily.

"It has to be her choice."

Emily almost laughed.

"I hate agreeing with you."

Frank looked at Michael.

"So do I."

Michael stood with Noah.

"We get him somewhere secure first."

Frank's expression changed.

"There is nowhere secure in your network."

Michael looked at Dawson.

Dawson nodded reluctantly.

"He's right."

Michael hated the sentence.

Then Emily spoke.

"There is one place Daniel will not expect."

Michael looked at her.

"Where?"

"My apartment."

Dawson stared.

"The apartment that was just shot through?"

"Not that one."

Emily looked at Michael.

"My father's house."

"You still own it?"

"No one knows I do."

Frank went still.

"Where?"

Emily shook her head.

"Not telling you."

For the first time all day, Frank laughed.

"Good."

Michael took Noah toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"Frank."

"Yes?"

"If I learn you knew that patch could kill him, nothing Claire ever felt for you will save you."

Frank met his eyes.

"I know."

Michael stared at him another second.

Then Frank added quietly.

May you like

"And if you learn I didn't, do not let that save me from what I did know."
