Chapter 13 - THE MOTEL ROOM

The motel in Revere looked like a place people chose when they wanted to disappear without being remembered.

Two floors.

Faded doors.

A broken ice machine.

A security camera pointed at a parking lot it probably had not recorded in years.

Dawson's team arrived first.

Michael waited in the SUV with Emily while four men cleared the second floor.

He hated waiting more than almost anything.

Emily noticed his hand tapping against his knee.

"Claire said you did that when you were pretending to be calm."

Michael stopped tapping.

"Claire told you too much."

"Claire told everyone too much except you."

The words could have been cruel.

Emily did not mean them that way.

That almost made them worse.

Michael looked at the motel door marked 214.

"You knew her better than I knew you did."

Emily nodded.

"I knew one part of her."

"The part that investigated criminal medical networks behind my back."

"Yes."

"Comforting."

Emily looked at him.

"You knew the part who danced barefoot in your kitchen."

Michael's face changed.

"She told you that?"

"She complained that you always tried to turn the music down."

Michael almost smiled.

"The neighbors complained."

"You own the nearest three houses."

He looked at her.

Emily raised one eyebrow.

"That was Claire's point."

Dawson's voice came through the radio.

"Room clear."

Michael was out of the SUV immediately.

Room 214 smelled of bleach and old carpet.

Eric Collins lay on the bed.

For one awful second, Michael thought he was dead.

Then Eric opened his eyes.

His wrists were zip-tied to the bed frame.

A strip of tape covered his mouth.

Dawson cut him free.

Emily removed the tape gently.

Eric sucked in air.

"My mother?"

"Alive," Emily said.

Eric closed his eyes.

Tears ran into his hair.

"Thank God."

Michael stood at the foot of the bed.

"Where is Noah?"

Eric opened his eyes again.

The fear returned.

"I don't know."

Michael's jaw tightened.

Emily spoke before he could.

"What do you know?"

Eric looked at her.

"You're Emily Parker."

"Yes."

"Thomas's daughter."

"Yes."

Eric started crying harder.

"I'm sorry."

Emily went still.

"For what?"

"My dad helped them."

Michael looked at Dawson.

"Robert Collins."

Eric nodded.

"He was a technician at Blue Harbor."

"What kind?"

"Formulation."

Emily's face changed.

"R-17."

Eric nodded.

"He helped develop the carrier system."

Emily sat on the edge of the bed.

"My father knew him?"

"They worked in the same wing."

"Were they friends?"

Eric laughed weakly.

"At first."

"Then?"

"Your father wanted to expose the trial records."

"And yours?"

Eric looked down.

"My father wanted money."

The room went quiet.

"Blue Harbor paid him to alter stability reports."

"When babies reacted badly, he changed the numbers."

Emily's expression tightened.

"How many?"

Eric shook his head.

"I don't know."

"How many children were hurt?"

"I don't know."

Emily stood abruptly.

Michael caught her elbow.

She pulled free.

"Do not."

He released her.

Eric looked ashamed.

"My father drank himself to death four years later."

Emily stared at him.

"That does not erase what he did."

"I know."

"And what you did does not become less terrible because someone lied to you."

Eric nodded.

"I know."

Michael leaned forward.

"Good."

Emily shot him a look.

He ignored it.

"Now tell me where Noah is."

Eric swallowed.

"Daniel wanted the lighthouse."

"We know."

"But Frank said it was compromised."

Michael's face hardened.

"You heard Frank say that?"

"Yes."

"Real Frank?"

Eric looked helpless.

"I think so."

"Why?"

"He had a scar on his left palm."

Dawson looked at Michael.

Frank had that scar.

Daniel did not.

Michael's jaw tightened.

"What else did Frank say?"

Eric closed his eyes, remembering.

"He said no one was supposed to touch the baby after the distraction."

"He said the house would empty for fourteen minutes."

"He said that was enough time to retrieve Claire's storage key and copy whatever she left."

Michael felt sick.

"He authorized my son's poisoning."

Eric shook his head quickly.

"He called it sedation."

Michael moved so fast Dawson stepped between them instinctively.

"Do not say that word like it changes anything."

Eric pressed himself against the headboard.

"I'm not defending him."

"You are still alive because I need information."

Emily stood.

"Michael."

"What?"

"Outside."

"No."

"Now."

Dawson looked at the ceiling.

Michael stared at Emily.

Then he walked into the corridor.

She followed.

"You are terrifying a witness who wants to talk."

"He helped poison my son."

"Yes."

"You expect me to be gentle?"

"I expect you to be useful."

Michael laughed sharply.

"You really have no survival instinct."

"I walked into your nursery while four armed men were moving toward me."

"Fair point."

Emily softened slightly.

"You can hate Eric later."

"I already do."

"Then hate him quietly until he tells us where Noah went."

Michael looked toward room 214.

"You sound like Claire."

Emily's expression changed.

"That is either the nicest or most manipulative thing you have said to me."

"Both."

They went back inside.

Michael sat this time.

"Continue."

Eric looked at Emily first.

Then at Michael.

"Daniel wanted Noah moved after the patch incident failed."

"Failed?"

"Noah survived."

Michael's eyes darkened.

"That was failure to him?"

"Daniel wanted leverage."

"Frank refused."

"At first."

Michael stared.

"At first."

Eric nodded.

"Then Daniel told him someone else had found the Lantern coordinates."

Emily frowned.

"Who?"

"He never said."

"What did Frank do?"

"He changed his mind about moving Noah."

Michael's face went blank.

"So Frank took him."

"I don't know."

"Did Frank arrange the hospital transport?"

"He had access to the emergency transfer company."

Dawson swore softly.

Michael looked at him.

"Did he?"

Dawson nodded.

"One of our backup medical vendors."

Michael's voice became cold.

"Chosen by Frank."

"Yes."

Eric continued.

"Frank said the only safe place was somewhere Daniel did not know."

Emily leaned forward.

"Did he name it?"

"No."

"Anything about a route?"

Eric thought.

"He said, 'Take him where Claire took Michael after the bridge.'"

Michael froze.

Emily turned toward him.

"What bridge?"

Michael's mind moved backward sixteen years.

Before Noah.

Before Claire became his wife.

Before Carter Logistics became an empire.

A winter night.

A broken axle.

A fight on the Tobin Bridge.

Claire had driven him north afterward because he was bleeding and too stubborn to go to a hospital.

She took him to her grandmother's cottage outside Marblehead.

Nobody knew that except Claire, Michael, and later Frank.

"The cottage."

Dawson looked up.

"What cottage?"

Michael was already standing.

"Claire's grandmother owned a place on Crowninshield Road."

"Still in the family?"

"No."

Michael paused.

"I bought it after Claire died."

Emily stared at him.

"Why?"

"I didn't want someone else living there."

He looked away.

"I never told anyone."

Dawson checked records.

"Property is held through one of your trusts."

"Exactly."

Emily's expression tightened.

"Frank manages your trusts."

Michael stopped.

That was true.

Frank knew.

Daniel might not.

Michael looked at Eric.

"Who heard Frank say that line?"

"Me and one other person."

"Who?"

Eric's face drained.

"My mother."

Michael immediately called Margaret's hospital.

The guard answered.

She was still there.

Safe.

Michael exhaled.

Then Eric shook his head.

"No."

Michael looked at him.

"What?"

"That isn't what I mean."

Eric's voice trembled.

"Mom heard it before they took her."

"So Daniel knows she heard it."

"Yes."

Emily understood first.

"Margaret wasn't kidnapped to trade for the brass key."

Eric nodded.

"She was kidnapped because she knew where Frank planned to hide Noah."

Michael was already moving toward the door.

Emily grabbed the red music box from the table.

Dawson called his team.

Eric shouted after them.

"Wait."

Michael turned.

Eric looked terrified.

"If Noah is at the cottage, do not approach from the road."

"Why?"

"Daniel put trackers in Frank's vehicles."

Michael stared at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because I built them."

Dawson cursed.

Eric continued.

"And there is something else."

Michael waited.

"The patch was not the only device made for Noah."

Emily's face went white.

"What else?"

Eric's lips trembled.

"A second carrier."

"Where?"

"Inside a pacifier."

Michael stopped breathing.

"What does it release?"

Eric shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Who has it?"

Eric looked at him.

"Frank."

Eric's motel room contained more than fear and the video confession.

Dawson found a notebook taped beneath the sink.

Every page contained chemical batches, dates, and initials.

Emily recognized Mercer's three patch orders immediately.

One line had been circled in red.

R17-06B / MOD REQUEST / D.M.

Michael stared at the initials.

"Daniel Morrow."

Eric nodded.

"He never used his full name."

"But you knew."

"Eventually."

Emily turned the page.

A second notation appeared beneath the modified batch.

F.M. REJECTED.

Michael looked at Eric.

"Frank rejected the formula change?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two days before Noah collapsed."

Michael's face hardened.

"Then why didn't he stop the operation?"

Eric looked miserable.

"Daniel told him the modified batch had been destroyed."

Emily closed the notebook.

"And Frank believed him because believing him allowed Lullaby to continue."

Eric nodded.

Michael felt a different kind of anger.

Frank had not wanted Noah dead.

That mattered legally.

It mattered morally.

It did not make the decision acceptable.

Frank had seen a warning and chosen the version of events that let him proceed.

Michael recognized the behavior because he had done versions of it in business for years.

Risk report unclear.

Vendor concern unconfirmed.

Employee complaint probably exaggerated.

Every powerful person learned ways to make uncertainty disappear when certainty would be inconvenient.

Noah had almost died inside that habit.

Eric pointed to another page.

"I wrote down the serial numbers."

"Why?"

"Because I got scared."

"Before or after you made them?"

Emily asked.

Eric looked ashamed.

"After."

Emily nodded.

"That seems to be everyone's favorite time."

Eric accepted the criticism.

Dawson photographed the notebook and sent copies to investigators outside Michael's network.

Michael noticed the choice.

"Why outside?"

Dawson looked at him.

"Because after everything we've learned, no evidence should exist in only one place."

Michael thought of Thomas Parker.

Then Claire.

"Good."

Dawson raised an eyebrow.

"You said good."

Michael frowned.

May you like

"Don't start."
