Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO RAN

Harrison read Caleb Mercer's email aloud once.

Then he called the number in the CFO's signature.

It went directly to voicemail.

He called again.

Nothing.

Khloe stood beside him in the conference room while Miranda searched the flight information on her laptop.

"Boarding starts in thirty-eight minutes."

Harrison's jaw tightened.

"He will not get on that plane."

Khloe looked at him.

"Can you stop him?"

"I can ask a judge to order preservation and testimony."

"I cannot have a private citizen dragged off an aircraft because I dislike his travel plans."

Miranda was already dialing the clerk.

"But if he has responsive records and intends to leave the jurisdiction after receiving a preservation order, the court may have questions."

Harrison sent Caleb one message.

DO NOT BOARD.

Thirty seconds later, three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Caleb finally responded.

I CAN'T TALK ON THE PHONE.

Harrison typed back.

WHERE ARE YOU?

No answer.

Khloe watched the clock.

Thirty-four minutes.

"What did he mean when he said he knows what Richard did to me?"

Harrison did not look away from the phone.

"We are not guessing."

"I am."

"Do it quietly."

The words should have annoyed her.

Instead, they steadied her.

Twenty-nine minutes before boarding, Caleb sent a photograph.

It showed a black binder on a desk.

A white label ran across the spine.

PHOENIX.

Below it was a typed date.

Three months earlier.

Khloe frowned.

"What is Phoenix?"

Harrison enlarged the image.

"Ask him."

Khloe typed before Harrison could.

WHAT IS IN THE BINDER?

Caleb answered her directly.

YOUR EXIT.

Khloe's skin prickled.

Another message arrived.

HIS VERSION OF IT.

Then Caleb sent a page.

It was a checklist.

The heading read DOMESTIC TRANSITION - PHASE THREE.

Khloe read the first line.

Secure independent control of primary liquid assets.

The second.

Finalize KHC debt allocation.

The third.

Establish documented pattern of emotional instability.

Her stomach lurched.

The fourth.

Prepare Lower Merion transfer through VK Residential.

The fifth.

Coordinate post-delivery medical observation.

Khloe stopped.

"Post-delivery medical observation."

Harrison took the phone from her.

His eyes moved down the page.

The final line was worse.

Initiate parenting petition when documentation threshold is met.

No one spoke.

Miranda slowly sat back down.

"They wrote it down."

Harrison's face had gone white with anger.

"Apparently."

Khloe touched her belly.

"They planned to use the hospital."

"We do not know exactly what that line means."

"I do."

"Khloe."

"No."

She pointed at the page.

"He called my doctor."

"He asked about psychiatric intervention."

"Now there is a written plan for medical observation after delivery."

"He was going to try to have me committed."

Miranda spoke carefully.

"We need the complete binder before we say that."

Khloe laughed without humor.

"Everyone keeps telling me to wait for the next page while my husband keeps proving the worst page exists."

Harrison's phone rang.

Caleb.

He answered on speaker.

"Where are you?"

Breathing filled the line.

Then a man's voice.

"Airport parking garage."

Caleb sounded terrified.

"Level four."

"Stay there."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because Richard knows."

Harrison's expression sharpened.

"Knows what?"

"That I copied Phoenix."

Khloe moved closer to the phone.

"Mr. Mercer, did Richard create that binder?"

A long pause.

"Not alone."

Harrison looked at Khloe.

"Who else?"

"Vanessa."

The answer came as a whisper.

"And me."

Khloe felt the floor drop beneath her.

"You helped them?"

Caleb inhaled shakily.

"I built the financial structure."

"I told myself it was asset protection."

"Then it became something else."

Harrison's voice hardened.

"Did you forge Khloe's signatures?"

"No."

"Did you know they were forged?"

Another pause.

"Eventually."

"That is not an answer."

"Yes."

Khloe closed her eyes.

Harrison continued.

"Who forged them?"

"Some were electronic."

"Some were signed by a document service Richard used."

"I never saw him physically sign her name."

"But he ordered the transactions."

"Yes."

"And Vanessa?"

Caleb exhaled.

"She handled the pass-through companies."

"VK Residential."

"Archwell."

"Two others."

Harrison took notes rapidly.

"Why are you running?"

"Because the neutral examiner's notice means they are going to find everything."

"Then cooperate."

"You think Richard is the only person I am afraid of?"

The line went quiet.

Khloe's eyes opened.

"Who else?"

Caleb did not answer.

Instead, he said, "Check page forty-seven."

Harrison looked at the photograph of the binder.

"Send it."

"I already did."

"To where?"

"A scheduled email."

"If I do not cancel it by midnight, it goes to you."

Harrison's voice became sharp.

"Caleb, do not play games."

"I am trying to stay alive."

The call ended.

Harrison immediately dialed back.

No answer.

Miranda looked at the clock.

"Boarding in seventeen minutes."

Harrison called courthouse security liaison, then the investigator, then an attorney representing Harrington Commercial who had appeared that morning.

Khloe listened to him build a wall around a man who seemed determined to run through it.

At the airport, Caleb never reached the gate.

He never passed security.

His car remained on level four.

His phone was found on the driver's seat.

His suitcase was in the trunk.

For ninety minutes, no one knew where he was.

Khloe imagined every terrible possibility.

Then, at 7:41 p.m., Harrison received a call from a federal prosecutor.

Caleb Mercer had not disappeared.

He had surrendered.

He had walked into a federal office near the airport and requested counsel before making a statement concerning potential bank fraud and wire fraud at Harrington Commercial Group.

Harrison listened without interrupting.

When the call ended, Khloe stared at him.

"He turned himself in?"

"Yes."

"Why would he do that?"

"Because he thinks cooperating first may save him."

Miranda looked grim.

"Or because he is more afraid of Richard's records than Richard himself."

Khloe thought of the binder.

"Midnight."

Harrison nodded.

They waited.

At 11:58, no email had arrived.

At 11:59, Khloe stood beside Harrison's desk with both hands wrapped around a glass of water she had forgotten to drink.

At midnight, nothing happened.

At 12:01, Harrison refreshed his inbox.

Nothing.

Khloe's heart sank.

"He canceled it."

Then the inbox chimed.

One new message.

From Caleb Mercer.

Subject line: PHOENIX.

Harrison opened it.

Thirty-seven documents appeared as attachments.

The first was the full domestic transition plan.

The second was a spreadsheet of hidden accounts.

The third was a series of messages between Richard and Vanessa.

Harrison skipped to page forty-seven.

Khloe leaned over his shoulder.

The page was titled POSTPARTUM CONTINGENCY.

Beneath it was a name.

Alison Reed, RN.

Khloe frowned.

"Who is that?"

Harrison searched the attached records.

Then he found an invoice.

Alison Reed had been paid twenty-five thousand dollars by Archwell Design Holdings.

The description read CONSULTING - FAMILY TRANSITION.

Miranda searched the state nursing database.

"She is licensed."

"Private postpartum care."

She clicked another result.

Then stopped.

"And she is Vanessa Kensington's cousin."

Khloe's glass slipped from her hand.

It hit the carpet without breaking.

May you like

Richard had not simply planned to call doctors after the baby arrived.

He had arranged to place Vanessa's cousin inside Khloe's postpartum care.
