Chapter 1 - THE FIRST MOVE

"You are going to go home and let him believe you still trust him."
Khloe stared at her brother as if he had just asked her to walk willingly into a burning house.
"You want me to sleep under the same roof with him?"
Harrison did not blink.
"For a little while."
"Harry, he has been moving money for months."
"Almost two years."
The correction landed harder than she expected.
Harrison turned the tablet toward her and tapped a column of transfers she had barely understood when she found them.
"He started laying the financial groundwork before your second miscarriage."
Khloe's face went still.
For a moment, the New York skyline beyond Harrison's office seemed to disappear behind a gray blur.
"Before?"
"Yes."
Harrison's voice remained calm because anger was a luxury he refused to waste when he was building a case.
"He did not have an affair and then decide to hide money."
"The hiding and the affair developed together."
"That matters."
Khloe pressed both hands over her stomach when the baby shifted beneath her palm.
"Why?"
"Because this is not just adultery."
"It is planning."
"And people who plan this carefully usually plan more than one exit."
Khloe looked down at the photographs on the screen.
Vanessa laughing beside Richard on a private terrace in St. Barts.
Richard asleep on white hotel sheets with Vanessa's hand resting across his chest.
A photograph of a diamond bracelet Khloe had never seen.
A receipt for a seventy-eight-thousand-dollar transfer from a company called Archwell Design Holdings.
A company Richard had never mentioned.
"What do you think he is planning?"
Harrison leaned back in his chair.
"That is what we are going to learn before he knows we are looking."
Khloe hated the word we because it made the situation sound orderly.
There was nothing orderly about discovering that the man who kissed her belly every morning had laughed about her miscarriages with another woman.
There was nothing orderly about returning to the house where the betrayal had lived beside her for two years.
"I cannot pretend nothing happened."
"You do not have to pretend nothing happened."
Harrison folded his hands.
"You only have to avoid telling him what you know."
"That sounds like pretending."
"No."
His gaze softened for the first time since he finished reviewing the evidence.
"It sounds like surviving long enough to leave on your terms."
Khloe looked away.
The word surviving made her skin tighten.
"You think he would hurt me?"
Harrison did not answer quickly.
That frightened her more than an immediate yes would have.
"I think a man who is willing to forge a financial life behind his wife's back should not be given the benefit of assumptions."
"Forge?"
Harrison slid a different page across the desk.
It was a scanned loan document connected to the Lower Merion estate.
Khloe saw her own name at the bottom.
Then she saw the signature.
Her breath caught.
"I never signed this."
"I know."
"That is not my signature."
"I know."
"Harry, that is a three-million-dollar credit line."
"Three point two."
Khloe stood too quickly and had to catch the edge of the desk when dizziness rolled through her.
Harrison was on his feet instantly.
"Sit down."
"Do not tell me to sit down."
Her voice rose for the first time.
"He forged my name for three million dollars."
"And if we confront him tonight, he has time to erase whatever we have not found yet."
Khloe stared at him.
"I want him out of my house."
"Then we will get him out."
"Tonight."
"Not recklessly."
Harrison walked around the desk and lowered his voice.
"Khloe, I need you to hear me as your lawyer for the next five minutes, not as your brother."
She swallowed hard.
"Fine."
"Do not destroy anything."
"Do not remove his devices."
"Do not access accounts you are not legally authorized to access."
"Do not threaten Vanessa."
"Do not post a single word online."
Khloe almost laughed at the absurdity of the last instruction.
"You think I am going to post this on social media?"
"I think people do strange things when they are hurt."
Harrison moved back behind his desk.
"And Richard's lawyers will turn every strange thing into an exhibit."
Khloe's stomach knotted.
"He has lawyers already?"
"A man does not move this much money without legal advice somewhere in the chain."
"That does not mean his divorce lawyers know."
"It means I assume nothing."
Harrison pressed a button on his desk phone.
"Send Miranda in."
Less than thirty seconds later, a woman in a dark green suit entered carrying a slim black folder.
Miranda Voss had handled family cases for celebrities, founders, politicians, and people whose private mistakes could move stock prices.
She looked at Khloe once and immediately closed the office door behind her.
"I am sorry we are meeting like this."
Khloe nodded because she did not trust her voice.
Miranda sat beside her rather than across from her.
"Your brother gave me the short version."
"There is a short version?"
Miranda's mouth tightened.
"There always is."
She opened the folder.
"The short version is that your husband may be preparing both a financial separation and a custody narrative before he files."
Khloe went cold.
"Custody?"
Her hand flew to her belly.
"The baby is not even born."
"Exactly."
Miranda's tone was gentle but direct.
"If he is planning ahead, he may already be collecting material to make you look unstable, irresponsible, financially dependent, or medically fragile."
Khloe shook her head.
"He cannot take my daughter because I had miscarriages."
"Not because of miscarriages."
"But he could try to distort grief, anxiety, prenatal stress, medication, therapy, arguments, or anything else he can present without context."
Khloe suddenly remembered every time Richard had asked whether she had taken her supplements.
Every time he had told the housekeeper that Khloe was "having a difficult day."
Every time he had insisted she rest upstairs when guests came over.
Small moments she had once mistaken for concern rearranged themselves into something uglier.
"He has been doing that."
Harrison's eyes sharpened.
"Doing what?"
"Telling people I am overwhelmed."
Khloe's voice became quieter with each word.
"He keeps saying pregnancy has made me emotional."
"He told my obstetrician once that I was not sleeping, but I never said that."
Miranda and Harrison exchanged a look.
Khloe saw it.
"What?"
Miranda did not soften the answer.
"Start documenting everything."
"Today."
"Keep your medical appointments."
"Follow your doctor's instructions."
"Do not let Richard speak for you in appointments."
"And if you feel unsafe at any point, you leave."
Harrison nodded once.
"I will have someone nearby."
Khloe frowned.
"Someone?"
"A security professional."
"Harry."
"You do not have to see him."
"No."
Harrison's jaw tightened.
"That part is not optional."
For a second, they were children again, arguing in the kitchen after Khloe tried to climb a tree during a thunderstorm and Harrison dragged her down by the ankle.
Then the memory vanished.
They were adults now.
And this storm had Richard's name on it.
Miranda reached into the folder and removed a small encrypted drive.
"We have preserved what you brought us."
"From this point forward, do not keep the only copy of anything in your house."
"Send lawful copies to us as soon as you get them."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"How long do I have to do this?"
"I do not know yet."
"Days?"
"Maybe."
"Weeks?"
"If necessary."
Khloe closed her eyes.
The baby moved again.
She opened them.
"No."
Harrison's eyebrows drew together.
"No what?"
"No weeks."
Khloe sat straighter.
"I spent six years waiting for Richard to become the man he promised he was."
"I am not giving him another month of my life because he is a better liar than I thought."
Harrison studied her for a long second.
Then something almost like pride touched his face.
"Good."
"Then help us move fast."
The next two hours were spent turning heartbreak into procedure.
Khloe changed the recovery email on her personal accounts.
She opened a new bank account in her name alone with money that was unquestionably separate property.
She authorized Miranda to begin preparing a divorce petition without filing it.
She signed medical releases that would allow her own counsel to secure records if Richard ever misrepresented her health.
She listed every piece of jewelry inherited from her mother.
She listed the antique drafting tools her father had given her before he died.
She listed passports, birth certificates, insurance documents, property deeds, tax returns, and the one item that made her hand tremble when she wrote it down.
Baby records.
Ultrasound photographs.
Genetic screening.
The little envelope containing the first printed heartbeat strip.
Harrison watched her pause.
"Take those tonight."
"Where?"
"Anywhere he cannot control."
Khloe nodded.
At nine forty-seven that night, Harrison's car left her at the end of the long private drive to the Lower Merion estate.
The house glowed warmly through tall windows.
From the outside, it looked like every magazine photograph ever taken of it.
Perfect stone facade.
Perfect gardens.
Perfect symmetry.
Khloe stood beside the gate with one hand on her belly and realized she had never hated beautiful architecture before.
A black SUV idled half a block away.
Harrison's security man.
Invisible enough for Richard not to notice.
Close enough for Khloe to know he was there.
She walked inside.
The foyer was silent.
Richard's coat was not on the hook.
Khloe let out a breath she had not realized she was holding.
She moved upstairs, packed the most irreplaceable documents into a canvas tote, and hid the tote beneath a stack of prenatal yoga mats in the back of her car.
Then she went to the nursery.
The room was still unfinished.
One wall was painted a soft cream.
Samples of pale green and dusty rose leaned against the baseboard.
A wooden crib remained boxed beneath the windows.
Khloe sat on the floor beside it.
She had imagined building that crib with Richard.
She had imagined arguing over instructions and laughing when they put the rails on backward.
She had imagined placing their daughter between them on Sunday mornings.
Instead, she sat alone in a room her husband's mistress had already called the dead weight's nursery.
Khloe pressed her fingers to her mouth.
The tears came then.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
They simply kept falling until her chest hurt.
Then a car door slammed outside.
Khloe froze.
Headlights swept across the nursery wall.
Richard was home.
She wiped her face quickly and stood.
His footsteps crossed the foyer below.
A moment later, his voice carried up the staircase.
"Khloe?"
She did not answer immediately.
"Khloe, are you home?"
She stepped into the hallway.
Richard looked up at her from the bottom of the stairs.
He was still wearing the navy suit from that morning.
His tie was loosened.
He smiled when he saw her.
The same smile that had once opened every door in her life.
"There you are."
He started upstairs.
Khloe gripped the railing to keep her hand from shaking.
Richard reached the landing and kissed her cheek.
The floral perfume on his collar was stronger than ever.
"I called you twice."
"My phone was on silent."
"Where were you?"
The question sounded casual.
His eyes did not.
Khloe remembered Harrison's voice.
Do not tell him what you know.
She forced herself to breathe.
"New York."
Richard stopped smiling.
"New York?"
"I wanted a second opinion about the delivery plan."
"In Manhattan?"
"Yes."
Richard studied her face.
Then he looked past her toward the nursery.
"You should have told me."
"You were in meetings."
"I always want to know where my wife is."
Khloe nearly answered that he seemed to know where Vanessa was just fine.
Instead, she smiled faintly.
"Now you know."
Richard stepped closer.
His hand settled on her belly.
For one sickening second, Khloe wanted to pull away.
She made herself stand still.
The baby kicked beneath his palm.
Richard's expression softened.
Then his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He glanced down.
Khloe saw only one letter on the screen before he turned it away.
V.
Richard looked back at her.
"Get some sleep."
"We have a lot to discuss tomorrow."
Something in his tone made her pulse quicken.
"About what?"
Richard's smile returned.
"Our future."
Then he walked into his study and locked the door behind him.
Khloe stood alone in the hallway.
Ten seconds later, her phone buzzed with a message from Harrison.
DO NOT REACT.
A second message appeared.
WE FOUND ANOTHER COMPANY.
May you like
Then a third.
THIS ONE IS IN YOUR NAME.
