Chapter 3 - NINETEEN DAYS

Khloe stared at Harrison's message until the letters became meaningless shapes.
Foreclosure.
Nineteen days.
She was standing in the nursery of a six-million-dollar estate while the bank was apparently preparing to take it away.
Downstairs, Richard was laughing at something Vanessa had said.
The sound traveled through the heating vent and made Khloe's stomach twist.
She called Harrison from the nursery closet.
"Tell me this is a mistake."
"It is not."
"How can a house go into foreclosure without me knowing?"
"Because the notices were redirected."
Harrison sounded furious now, but even his fury came measured.
"The mortgage servicer changed the correspondence address eight months ago."
"To where?"
"A law office in Delaware."
"Whose law office?"
"One that has represented three Harrington shell companies."
Khloe leaned against the closet wall.
"I pay the household account every month."
"You transfer money into it."
"Richard's office actually makes the mortgage payment."
Khloe closed her eyes.
Of course.
For six years, Richard had praised her for never wanting to deal with banking logistics.
He called it taking something off her plate.
Now she understood he had been taking control, not responsibility.
"Where did my money go?"
"Some paid staff."
"Some paid utilities."
"A lot of it appears to have been swept into one of his operating accounts."
Khloe slid down onto a storage bench.
"Can we stop the foreclosure?"
"Yes."
The speed of Harrison's answer steadied her.
"But stopping it will alert him that you know."
"Then alert him."
"Not yet."
Khloe clenched her jaw.
"Harry, you said we were moving fast."
"We are."
"Nineteen days is not a deadline."
"It is evidence."
Harrison lowered his voice.
"There is a reason he let the house fall this far behind."
"I want to know whether he intends to cure the default after you sign the postnup, or whether he intends to let the property go and blame the loss on you."
Khloe thought about Vanessa's warning.
Do not get too attached to the Lower Merion house.
Richard has other plans for it.
"She knew."
"Vanessa?"
"Yes."
"She practically told me."
"Good."
Khloe almost snapped at him.
"Good?"
"It means she is careless when she thinks she has power."
"Careless people talk."
"Let her keep talking."
Khloe heard footsteps outside the closet.
"I have to go."
She ended the call and stepped into the nursery.
Richard stood in the doorway.
"Who were you talking to?"
Khloe's heart hit her ribs.
"My doctor."
"In the closet?"
"I did not want Vanessa hearing my medical questions."
Richard's expression softened almost instantly.
"Of course."
He crossed the room and touched her shoulder.
"Is everything okay?"
"Everything is fine."
Khloe forced a smile.
"The baby is perfect."
Richard looked toward the hallway.
"Vanessa left."
"Good."
His fingers tightened slightly on her shoulder.
"She said you were cold to her."
Khloe nearly laughed.
"Your employee came into my nursery and criticized every choice I made."
"She is a designer."
"She is rude."
Richard sighed like a patient man dealing with a difficult child.
"Khloe, please."
"What?"
"I need you to make an effort."
The cruelty of that sentence stunned her.
Make an effort.
For his mistress.
Inside the house he was secretly letting fall into foreclosure.
"I am five months pregnant and apparently halfway to sainthood."
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Khloe smiled.
"Nothing."
"I am tired."
She moved past him.
Richard caught her wrist.
Not violently.
Not enough to leave a mark.
But hard enough that she stopped.
"The agreement."
Khloe looked down at his hand.
Richard released her immediately.
"I need it signed today."
"I told you I am having someone review it."
"Who?"
"A lawyer."
The silence that followed was different from the others.
Richard's face did not change much.
But the warmth left his eyes.
"Which lawyer?"
Khloe shrugged.
"I have not decided."
"Use Martin Heller."
"He handles our estate work."
"Then he is not independent."
Richard smiled without humor.
"You have been reading."
"I know what independent means."
"That is not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
For a moment, neither moved.
Khloe realized they were no longer pretending equally.
Richard knew something had shifted.
He simply did not know how much.
"Nothing."
He stepped back.
"Take your time."
"But do not take too much."
Khloe watched him leave.
Ten minutes later, she went downstairs and found the leather folder gone from his desk.
By noon, Harrison had arranged for a mobile notary to meet Khloe at a coffee shop while Richard was at work.
She signed a limited power of attorney allowing Miranda to preserve financial records and respond if anyone attempted to bind her to additional debt.
Then she met with a forensic accountant named Evelyn Park in the back room of Harrison's Philadelphia satellite office.
Evelyn was fifty-one, soft-spoken, and frighteningly good at making fraud look simple.
She spread six pages across the table.
"Richard did not just stop paying the mortgage."
Khloe looked at the numbers.
"What did he do?"
"He borrowed against the house twice."
"The first loan is legitimate."
"You signed it three years ago during the renovation."
Khloe remembered that one.
"The second?"
Evelyn tapped a signature.
"Not yours."
"How much?"
"Two point four million."
Khloe's chest tightened.
"And the money?"
"Moved into Harrington Commercial Group."
"Then out again through consulting invoices."
"Several of those invoices were paid to Vanessa Kensington's design company."
Khloe stared at her.
"He used my house to pay his mistress?"
Evelyn's expression remained neutral.
"That is one interpretation."
"What is the other?"
"That Vanessa's company was being used as a pass-through."
"For what?"
"We are still tracing it."
Khloe leaned back.
Every answer opened another door.
Behind every door waited another betrayal.
"How much did Vanessa receive?"
"One point one million dollars over fourteen months."
Khloe laughed once.
It sounded broken.
"I bought her the penthouse nursery."
Evelyn did not answer.
She did not need to.
That evening, Khloe returned home before Richard.
She walked directly to the mailroom built beside the service entrance.
The estate manager sorted everything there before placing personal correspondence on a silver tray in the foyer.
Khloe asked him one simple question.
"Thomas, have we received anything from First Commonwealth Mortgage recently?"
Thomas's face changed.
"Mr. Harrington asked me to forward all mortgage correspondence to his office."
"When?"
"Last summer."
"Did he say why?"
"He said you were under too much stress."
There it was again.
Stress.
Khloe smiled.
"Thank you."
She started to walk away.
Thomas hesitated.
"Mrs. Harrington?"
Khloe turned.
He lowered his voice.
"There was a man here last week."
"From the bank."
Khloe went still.
"What man?"
"He asked to photograph the exterior."
"Mr. Harrington told me not to bother you."
"I thought you knew."
Khloe looked at the floor for a moment.
"I do now."
Upstairs, she locked herself in the bedroom and sent Harrison the information.
He called immediately.
"We file tomorrow."
Khloe's pulse jumped.
"The divorce?"
"The divorce and an emergency petition to preserve marital property."
"I was hoping for forty-eight more hours."
"We do not have them."
"Why?"
Harrison was quiet for half a second.
"Because Evelyn found the foreclosure sale instructions."
Khloe gripped the phone.
"Nineteen days."
"That is not the part I am worried about."
"Richard requested an accelerated sale."
"The house could be transferred to an investor before then if the lender accepts a negotiated payoff."
Khloe's mouth went dry.
"Who is the investor?"
"A limited liability company called VK Residential."
Khloe did not need to ask what the initials meant.
Vanessa Kensington.
Richard was not merely abandoning the house.
He was arranging for his mistress to acquire it.
The home Khloe had renovated.
The nursery she had designed.
The place where she had mourned two pregnancies.
He intended to take it from her through debt and hand it to Vanessa through a shell company.
Khloe looked toward the framed wedding photograph on her dresser.
Then she lifted it.
For the first time since discovering the affair, she did not cry.
She placed the photograph facedown.
"File it."
Harrison exhaled slowly.
"Once I file, there is no pretending anymore."
Khloe stared at the dark glass of the bedroom window.
"Good."
"I am done pretending."
At 8:03 the next morning, Harrison filed the divorce petition.
At 8:17, Miranda filed the emergency property motion.
At 8:46, a judge signed a temporary order preventing the sale, transfer, or further encumbrance of the Lower Merion estate pending a hearing.
At 9:12, a process server walked into Harrington Commercial Group's executive conference room.
At 9:14, Richard Harrington learned his wife had stopped being afraid of him.
At 9:16, Khloe's phone rang.
She answered.
May you like
Richard did not say hello.
"What the hell did you do?"
