Chapter 15 - THE BABY THAT NEVER EXISTED

Harrison opened the folder on Khloe's hospital tray.
Clara shifted against Khloe's chest but did not wake.
Khloe kept one hand over the baby's back.
"Tell me."
Harrison looked at Clara first.
Then at Khloe.
"Vanessa told Richard she was pregnant six weeks before you discovered the affair."
Khloe's face tightened.
"Before I saw the message."
"Yes."
"She told him she was about nine weeks along."
"She gave him a due date."
"She sent him laboratory paperwork and an ultrasound image."
Khloe felt sick.
"Fake?"
"The laboratory document was fabricated."
"The ultrasound image belonged to another patient and had been altered."
Khloe looked down at Clara.
The scale of the deception felt obscene beside a real newborn.
"Where did she get the ultrasound?"
"Alison Reed."
Khloe's eyes snapped up.
Vanessa's cousin.
The nurse who had been paid to enter Khloe's postpartum care.
"She helped?"
"Vanessa says Alison gave her an old educational image that had been stripped of identifying information."
"Vanessa then hired someone else to alter the header."
"Alison claims she did not know how Vanessa intended to use it."
"That will be for investigators and the licensing board to sort out."
Khloe's fingers tightened slightly over Clara's blanket.
"Richard believed it."
"At first."
"Why did she do it?"
Harrison's mouth hardened.
"Because he kept telling her he would leave you after the right financial pieces were in place."
"She thought he was moving too slowly."
"So she created a deadline."
Khloe gave a quiet, incredulous laugh.
"A baby."
"Yes."
"She created a baby to speed up my divorce."
"That is her account."
"And he responded by moving faster."
"According to Caleb, yes."
Harrison turned a page.
"The KHC debt allocations accelerated after Vanessa announced the pregnancy."
"So did the plan to transfer the house."
"So did the postpartum strategy."
Khloe closed her eyes.
The cruelty became circular.
Vanessa lied about a pregnancy.
Richard used the lie as a reason to destroy his pregnant wife's financial life.
Then he planned to use Khloe's actual delivery as a weapon in custody litigation.
"When did Richard find out?"
"He became suspicious about two weeks ago."
"Why?"
"Vanessa kept postponing appointments he offered to attend."
"She claimed her doctor wanted privacy because of the divorce publicity."
"Then Richard asked for insurance paperwork because he was setting up a trust."
"The dates did not match."
Khloe remembered the text.
He is asking for the clinic paperwork.
Then give me two days.
"Caleb knew."
"Yes."
"Why didn't he tell Richard?"
"Because by then Caleb was afraid of both of them and involved in the financial scheme himself."
Harrison's expression sharpened.
"And because Vanessa had leverage over him."
"What kind?"
"Transfers he approved."
"Expenses he hid."
"Enough to ruin him professionally."
Khloe looked at the folder.
"How did Richard confirm it?"
"He apparently confronted Vanessa Thursday night."
"She denied everything."
"Friday morning, before the hearing, he contacted the clinic listed on one of the documents."
"They would not release information, but they told him the form he described did not match their current format."
"That was enough to send him toward you."
Khloe remembered him near the security checkpoint.
Vanessa lied to me.
Things I did because I believed her.
Anger rose so quickly she had to breathe through it.
"Things he did because he believed her."
Harrison nodded.
"Do not let him move responsibility."
"I am not."
Khloe looked down at Clara again.
"He did not forge my signature because Vanessa made him."
"He did not call my doctor because Vanessa made him."
"He did not laugh about my miscarriages because Vanessa made him."
"He chose every one of those things."
Harrison's voice softened.
"Yes."
Khloe's eyes filled, but she did not cry.
She had spent too long trying to understand Richard's choices as reactions to other people.
Work stress.
His father.
Vanessa.
Her infertility.
His ambition.
There was always another explanation available if she needed one badly enough.
Now there was only choice.
Richard chose.
Vanessa chose.
Caleb chose.
And Khloe could choose what came next.
"What else did Vanessa say?"
Harrison turned another page.
"She says Richard promised her the Lower Merion house."
"We knew that."
"He promised marriage within sixty days of your divorce."
"He promised a five-million-dollar trust for the baby."
Khloe's mouth tightened.
"The imaginary baby."
"Yes."
"He also promised to make her president of a new residential design subsidiary."
"In exchange, she allowed her companies to be used for transfers."
"She claims she believed most of it was tax and asset planning."
Khloe raised an eyebrow.
"Do you believe her?"
"No."
Harrison did not hesitate.
"The emails show she knew they were trying to keep assets from you."
"She may not have understood every financial offense."
"She understood the divorce."
Khloe felt no surprise.
"And Phoenix?"
"Vanessa says the original idea came from Richard."
"He wanted documentation that you were too unstable to make sound parenting decisions."
"She suggested Alison because he wanted a private nurse he could trust."
Khloe's stomach turned.
"Trust to do what?"
"Observe."
"Write."
"Report."
"Vanessa insists nobody told Alison to fabricate medical events."
"But the entire arrangement was undisclosed to you."
Khloe stared toward the bassinet.
"That alone is enough."
"For me, yes."
Harrison closed the folder halfway.
"There is more."
Khloe almost laughed.
"Of course there is."
"Vanessa found a document on Richard's laptop three weeks ago."
"She photographed it."
"She kept it because it scared her."
"What document?"
Harrison slid over a printed image.
The heading read PHASE FOUR - EXPOSURE REDUCTION.
Several bullets concerned shutting down shell companies after the divorce.
One line concerned Archwell.
Resolve V.K. obligations through fixed settlement.
Terminate access to financial systems.
Reassign residential property if required.
Khloe read the line twice.
"He was going to get rid of her too."
"Financially, yes."
"Probably personally."
Harrison tapped the next page.
"There was a draft settlement for Vanessa."
"One million dollars."
"No house."
"No company presidency."
"No five-million-dollar baby trust."
Khloe leaned back.
For the first time, she could almost see Vanessa clearly.
Not as a rival.
Not as the woman who had "won" Richard.
As another person who had mistaken Richard's promises for ownership documents.
The difference was that Vanessa had helped him destroy someone else while believing them.
And when her fantasy collapsed, she had put both hands on Khloe and shoved.
Compassion did not erase that.
"Is that why she is cooperating?"
"Partly."
"Her lawyer also understands the evidence against her is strong."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"Does cooperation mean she walks away?"
"No."
"Not if I have anything to say about the civil case."
"And criminal sentencing is not ours to promise."
"Good."
Clara made a tiny sound.
Khloe looked down immediately.
The baby's eyes opened for half a second.
Then closed again.
Everything in Khloe softened.
"Did Vanessa say where my mother's jewelry is?"
Harrison's expression changed.
"Yes."
Khloe's head snapped up.
"Where?"
"Richard put it in a safe-deposit box under one of the shell entities."
"Vanessa saw him do it."
Khloe's eyes filled.
"The locket?"
"She says all of it was there."
"We have notified the neutral examiner."
"Nothing will be removed."
Khloe pressed her lips together.
The locket contained the only photograph she carried of herself with Harrison and their parents before her mother became ill.
Richard had taken it for leverage.
Not for money.
Not because he needed it.
Because he knew she loved it.
"I want it back."
"You will get it back."
Harrison said it with more certainty than most of his promises.
Khloe believed him.
Three days later, Clara was cleared to leave neonatal monitoring.
Khloe was not yet cleared to go home, so the baby stayed in her room as much as possible.
Richard received photographs through a court-approved parenting coordinator.
He sent one message through counsel.
She looks like you.
Khloe did not reply.
The next morning, his lawyers sent a settlement proposal.
The offer was twenty-two pages long.
Richard would agree to transfer his interest in the Lower Merion estate to Khloe.
He would disclaim the KHC debts.
He would create a substantial trust for Clara.
He would pay Khloe a large cash settlement.
In exchange, Khloe would narrow financial discovery, withdraw requests connected to several shell entities, agree not to provide certain civil records voluntarily to outside investigators unless legally compelled, and support expanded parenting access.
Khloe read the proposal slowly.
Then she looked at Harrison.
"He is trying to buy silence."
"That is one interpretation."
"What is the lawyer interpretation?"
"He is attempting a global civil resolution while minimizing collateral exposure."
Khloe stared at him.
"That is the same sentence wearing an expensive suit."
Harrison almost smiled.
"Pretty much."
Khloe placed the settlement on the tray.
"No."
"You have not seen the amount."
"I do not care."
"You should care enough to understand it."
"Fine."
"Tell me the amount."
Harrison named a number.
Khloe's eyebrows rose despite herself.
It was more money than most people would see in several lifetimes.
Then she thought of the blood on the courthouse steps.
She thought of her daughter struggling to breathe.
She thought of the nurse selected to write notes about her postpartum behavior.
She thought of her mother's stolen locket.
"Still no."
Harrison nodded.
"Good."
Khloe stared at him.
"You told me I should understand it."
"I wanted to make sure your no was informed."
"It is."
That afternoon, Vanessa's lawyer provided one final item.
A flight itinerary.
Two seats had originally been reserved on a private charter leaving Philadelphia forty-eight hours after the sanctions hearing.
Destination: Grand Cayman.
Passengers: Richard Harrington and Vanessa Kensington.
Khloe studied the itinerary.
"They were going to leave."
Harrison turned the page.
"That was the original booking."
A revised manifest had been created the night before the courthouse hearing.
Only one passenger remained.
Richard Harrington.
Vanessa had been removed.
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"He found out she lied."
"And planned to leave her behind."
"Apparently."
May you like
The flight had not been canceled.
It was scheduled to depart the next morning.
