Chapter 6 - FORTY-THREE SECONDS

The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning in a courtroom that smelled faintly of old wood and burnt coffee.

Khloe sat between Harrison and Miranda.

Richard sat at the opposite table with three lawyers.

For the first time, Vanessa was present.

She sat directly behind Richard.

No one had required her to attend.

That was exactly why she came.

She wore a pale gray suit and an expression of solemn concern.

To anyone who did not know the truth, she could have been a trusted executive supporting a friend through a painful divorce.

Khloe knew better.

Vanessa caught her looking.

Then she lowered one hand to her own abdomen.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Khloe's breath caught.

Vanessa smiled.

It was the first time she had openly referenced the pregnancy from the messages without using words.

Khloe turned away before Richard could see her react.

Judge Miriam Calder entered at nine sharp.

She was sixty-two, silver-haired, and known for having no patience with theatrics.

That worried Richard's legal team more than it worried Harrison.

His first argument lasted eleven minutes.

He asked the court to maintain the temporary property restraints.

He requested neutral forensic preservation of financial records.

He asked that neither spouse transfer assets outside ordinary expenses.

He asked for exclusive access to copies of corporate and mortgage records involving Khloe's name.

Then he sat down.

Richard's lead attorney, Douglas Vane, stood.

He argued that Harrison had manufactured a crisis out of ordinary business transactions.

He described Khloe's allegations as emotionally driven.

He asked the court to dissolve the restrictions.

Then he introduced the forty-three-second video.

The courtroom monitor lit up.

Khloe watched herself cry.

She watched herself throw the mug.

She heard Vanessa exhale softly behind Richard.

Vane stopped the video.

"Your Honor, this incident occurred months before Mrs. Harrington filed for divorce."

"It demonstrates that Mr. Harrington's concern regarding emotional volatility was not created in response to litigation."

Judge Calder looked toward Khloe.

Then toward Harrison.

"Mr. Cole?"

Harrison rose.

"May I play the complete recording?"

Vane turned sharply.

"Objection."

Judge Calder raised an eyebrow.

"On what basis?"

Vane hesitated.

"The full recording is lengthy and largely irrelevant."

Harrison's voice stayed even.

"The segment offered by Mr. Harrington was extracted from a continuous recording."

"Context is the issue."

Judge Calder looked at Vane.

"You opened the door."

The complete recording began.

No one spoke as the timestamp advanced.

Khloe heard her own voice on the video.

"Richard, please call me back."

A minute later, her phone rang on the recording.

Khloe answered.

Her side of the conversation was audible.

"What did she say?"

A pause.

"No."

Another pause.

"No, I need you to come home."

Her voice broke.

"Richard, we lost the baby."

The courtroom changed.

Even Vane looked down.

The video continued.

Khloe sat on the floor.

She cried quietly.

She called again.

She received no answer.

Only after more than twenty minutes did she stand and throw the mug.

Harrison stopped the recording there.

"The date was the date of Mrs. Harrington's second miscarriage."

Judge Calder's face tightened.

Harrison looked at Richard.

"Mr. Harrington knew that when he selected the clip."

Vane rose.

"My client did not personally edit the video."

Harrison did not look away from Richard.

"Then someone did him a remarkable disservice."

Judge Calder leaned forward.

"Mr. Vane, was your office aware of the surrounding footage before submitting the excerpt?"

"No, Your Honor."

That answer came too quickly to be rehearsed.

Khloe believed him.

Richard had not only manipulated her.

He had misled his own lawyers.

Judge Calder removed her glasses.

"I will say this once."

"This court will not tolerate selective evidence designed to create a misleading impression."

"If it happens again, I will consider sanctions."

Richard's jaw tightened.

Behind him, Vanessa stopped smiling.

The hearing moved to finances.

Evelyn Park testified by video regarding the forged loan signatures and the KHC Residential obligations.

Vane argued there was no proof Richard personally signed Khloe's name.

Evelyn agreed.

Then she explained that the loan proceeds flowed into accounts Richard controlled.

She explained that one point one million dollars moved through Vanessa's design company.

For the first time, every head in the courtroom turned toward Vanessa.

Her face went white.

Richard whispered something to Vane.

Harrison noticed.

So did Judge Calder.

"Is Ms. Kensington a witness in this matter?"

Vane cleared his throat.

"Possibly, Your Honor."

"Then she should not be sitting in the courtroom while testimony relevant to her is presented."

Vanessa stood abruptly.

Her chair scraped against the floor.

As she walked out, she looked directly at Khloe.

The hatred in her eyes was no longer hidden.

Khloe felt it like heat.

Judge Calder kept the property restrictions in place.

She appointed a neutral forensic examiner.

She ordered both parties to preserve electronic communications.

She denied Richard's request for exclusive possession of the estate.

Then she addressed his allegations concerning Khloe's mental health.

"I have reviewed Dr. Morgan's letter."

Richard's face changed.

Vane looked at him sharply.

Judge Calder continued.

"The treating physician reports no medical basis for the extraordinary concerns described in Mr. Harrington's declaration."

"The physician further reports that Mr. Harrington contacted the practice repeatedly to provide his own characterization of Mrs. Harrington's mental state."

The courtroom was silent.

"At this stage, I see no basis for a psychiatric evaluation."

Khloe's shoulders dropped with relief.

Then Judge Calder looked at both tables.

"There is an unborn child at the center of this dispute."

"I suggest both sides remember that before converting this case into a public spectacle."

Harrison stood.

"Understood, Your Honor."

Vane did the same.

"Yes, Your Honor."

The hearing ended at 11:23.

Outside the courtroom, reporters filled the corridor.

Harrison instructed Khloe to wait in a conference room while security cleared a path.

She had just sat down when the door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

Alone.

Khloe stood immediately.

"Get out."

Vanessa closed the door behind her.

"You humiliated him."

Khloe laughed in disbelief.

"I humiliated him?"

"You know what I mean."

"No."

"I really do not."

Vanessa walked closer.

"Richard built everything he has from nothing."

Khloe stared at her.

"His father gave him the first company."

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"He turned it into an empire."

"And apparently used my signature to finance part of it."

Vanessa glanced toward the door.

"You have no idea what those companies are for."

Khloe's eyes narrowed.

"But you do."

The mistake registered instantly.

Vanessa stepped back.

Khloe did not let her escape it.

"You know about KHC."

"You know about the mortgage."

"You know about the money running through your design company."

"And you know about the house."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

Khloe almost smiled.

"That is a strange thing to say in a courthouse."

Vanessa moved closer again.

"You think Harrison makes you untouchable."

"He does not."

Khloe's heart began pounding, but she held her ground.

"Neither does sleeping with my husband."

Vanessa's face changed.

For one second, Khloe saw something raw beneath the polish.

Not confidence.

Fear.

Vanessa placed one hand over her abdomen again.

"He is not going back to you."

"I do not want him back."

That answer seemed to confuse her.

Vanessa blinked.

Khloe continued.

"You can have the man."

"What you cannot have is my home, my money, my name, or my daughter."

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then the conference room door opened.

Harrison stood there.

His eyes moved from Khloe to Vanessa.

"Ms. Kensington."

Vanessa straightened.

"I was just leaving."

"Good."

She walked past him.

Harrison waited until the door closed.

"What did she say?"

Khloe repeated the conversation.

When she reached the part about KHC, Harrison stopped her.

"Exact words."

Khloe gave them.

He nodded slowly.

"She knows more than her lawyer will want her to know."

"She has a lawyer?"

"She will by lunch."

Khloe sank into the chair.

"She touched her stomach."

Harrison understood immediately.

"The messages about the baby."

Khloe nodded.

"She is pregnant."

Harrison did not answer.

"Harry."

"We do not know that."

"She practically announced it."

"She suggested it."

"There is a difference."

Khloe looked away.

"Not to me."

Harrison sat across from her.

"I know."

His phone buzzed.

He read the message.

Then read it again.

Khloe watched his face.

"What?"

"The neutral examiner just sent a preservation notice to Harrington Commercial."

"Okay."

"Their chief financial officer resigned six minutes later."

Khloe frowned.

"Why?"

Harrison stood.

"That is exactly what I intend to find out."

By three that afternoon, they knew the CFO's name was Caleb Mercer.

By four, they knew he had booked a flight to Zurich.

By five, they knew the ticket was one-way.

And at 5:18, Caleb Mercer sent Harrison Cole an email containing only seven words.

I KNOW WHAT RICHARD DID TO HER.
